Is MGS4 Really Kojima's Last? Konami Begs to Differ.

Hideo Kojima has gone on record that MGS4 would be his last Metal Gear game. But will that really be the case? In one word, "no," at least according to Konami marketing VP Anthony Crouts.

I'm sure he's never going to let go of Metal Gear Solid—trust me. [Snake's] a big character, so as a franchise I think he'll always hold it near and dear to his heart...In one capacity or another, he will always be involved in the Metal Gear franchise.
In one capacity or another, we've sort of stopped believing Kojima when he says he's done with Metal Gear. And apparently, so have his colleagues.

MGS4 Not Kojima's Last? [nextgeneration]

  • I certainly hope Kojima takes enough time off after fornicating (figuratively) with Snake to get a Zone of the Enders 3.

  • It could be the last in the Solid series proper, so spinoffs could likely happen.

How about a Splinter vs Solid?

  • I honestly think he is done with Metal Gear in a very specific form. He is probably no longer going to direct them. He may produce, but he is done being the main guy. He is for sure done with Snake. The journey of this character is done and I'm sure he wants to get rid of Snake in some fashion, so someone new can come in as director AND character. He has basically said that there will be more Metal Gears but Snake and him won't be involved in any significant way.

  • Please Konami, don't kill MGS.

Of course he'll still be involved. I sense Metal Gear Liquid coming, this time showing everything from Liquid's point of view. Or Metal Gear: The Ocelot files, showing how sneaky and brilliant Ocelot has been throughout the years.

Screw it. Watch there be a clone of Solid Snake.

I hope me makes me a joke character in the next game.

    XD

  • i want Metal Gear ~ Solid 4 from the Cyborg perspective kind of =-(

  • i'd like to see what kojima could do with a new IP like the game he's going to make with suda 51

  • Yeah, there are plenty of side stories in MGS that could become games even if Snake doesn't make it through 4. A game based on Gray Fox would be a good start.

I'm also hoping that he's already working on ZOE 3, I could actually see the sixaxis being useful in that one.

  • Kojima will never stop with Metal Gear.He may stop writing and directing them, but the series will go in some form and he will be the one to guide it in some form.

  • I don't think MGS4 is the last metal gear. I do think that the chances that this is the last mission for Snake is quite a possibility.

  • Maybe if he stops writing and directing them, they won't be a big steaming pile of poop at the end.

    I'm looking at YOU, MGS2!

  • ZoE 3, PLEEEEEEEEASE??!?!

that'll be a system seller for me....

    MGS i never liked...

I really think that Snake has become too much of a loved character worldwide for the series to be killed off.

  • I want to see new IPs. Something in the vein of Boktai where to power up your character you have to have Sony and Xbox fanboys holding hands...

@icepick314: You need yourself a lobotomy my friend.

  • It's just like Halo. There isn't going to be an MGS5, but there sure as hell will be more Metal Gear.

  • bullshit it's Kojima last game, he's got an ego bigger than halo that needs to be fed constantly.

  • @Calhoun: don't be to hard on mgs2 i have a feeling that bizzaro ending will all make sense in time

@Witzbold: i like to see a main character die for once in a game they never have the guts to go through with it.... I'm looking at you prince of Persia

  • @Witzbold:
so was Superman but we sure killed him off pretty good...

    @NumberONE:
personally i never liked stealth games....i hate sneaking around...

  • @icepick314: protip they brought super man back to life

  • I'm sure this is the last 'Solid' game. Who knows what'll come after though. Metal Gear will continue with out Snake because the world in universe won't actually end. Snake most likely won't save the world. Or if he does one evil replaces another.

We could end up with Metal Gear Raiden, or the next hero to follow in Snake's footsteps.

Remember, it doesn't have to be a 'Solid' game to be in canon. After all the third game to be released in the Metal Gear canon (sans the spin offs) was the first MGS. Prior to that the struggle between Big Boss and Solid Snake had simply fallen under the tag Metal Gear, no Solid attached.

    @icepick314: I never liked superman anyways. ;D

  • @icepick314: Oh... you're one of "those" people... hehehe

@Black-Dog-Howls: What I really would love to see if the Metal Gear series were to continue is more Frank Jeager and how he became Gray Fox. What the Metal Gear Solid series has always lacked is a proper old Big Boss with the gray hair and the eye patch.

  • @Lord_The_Night_Knight:
I hope you mean Splinter from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...I hate splinter cell, wouldn't want to play it.

  • I think it would be bad if Kojima continued to make Solid games. There's only so many ways you can drag out a storyline without giving it a proper resolution, and MGS4 seems to be designed to resolve all the questions posed by the previous installments. On top of that, MGS4 seems kind of special, based upon the way they've been hyping it with several trailers and info. It's pretty much the end to Snake's journey.

Of course, that's not to say that Kojima won't fancy himself with several original IP's, all of which I would love to see.

  • I think he really means it this time. ZOE3 should be his next project.

  • I thought he only agreed to direct this one because fans mailed him death threats. Was I misinformed?

  • How about a spinoff in the same MGS universe? Perhaps starring someone with abilities not quite so BS, like the first MGS. That was the only fun MGS in my eyes, and spinoffs in the same universe are very interesting (when done well).

  • This is the same thing he said after MGS 2, then again after MGS 3, as long as Konami keeps hilighting new MGS games, Kojima will be working on them, he won't trust anyone else with his baby. Which is fine by me, as long as he finds time for Z.O.E. 3

  • "In one capacity or another, he will always be involved in the Metal Gear franchise... OR ELSE"

    *Cocks gun*

And I'd like to second the notion that ZOE3 be next on his agenda. Or perhaps a new Snatchers (and by new I don't mean new like Shadowrun) could be nice. Of course, it's wholly possible that Project S is laying the seeds for that to happen.

  • @tehFluffz:

As long as it's still bringing in the dough, it they'll never end the series, even if Kojima was gone.

I can't actually find the quote, so I could be wrong, but I'm assuming he said this would be the "last Metal Gear game he's directly involved with."

So... a little lesson in deductive reasoning:
This does not mean it's the last Metal Gear PERIOD.
It doesn't mean he won't do Metal Gear spinoffs. Well, it might - depends on his definition of what makes a Metal Gear game. Maybe he'll make a silly game where you play as Otacon or something... haha. Also, what's direct involvement? He was the DIRECTOR (and creator) before... Even if he just became a producer it would be less direct.
It defnitely doesn't mean he's finished with Konami.

So uh... quit panicking and stuff... It's not like he's dying or something.

  • Look, I think the only way MGS will ever leave Kojima is if he just up and dies. And seriously? I think he might come back from the dead anyway.

  • At least it'll give him time to work on a Zone of the Enders 3...

I'll miss ol' Snake though if it's true, though.

  • Didnt Kojima say that this was gonna be his last Metal Gear Solid game with Snake in it? not his last metal gear period.

Either way it just can never be the same without snake...

  • The real translation to the quote is "We're gonna milk it as much as we can whether he likes it or not."

To be honest, I feel bad for Kojima. I'm OK with the death of Metal Gear Solid (or at least his involvement with it) if he wants to make new things. This is mostly what he is known for and I'd like to see what else a mind like his can churn out. What happened to wanting original stuff?

  • @JAcK0R: I second that. I'm playing through The Second Runner again, and it's still amazing as the first.

Kojima really needs to add another game to the excellent series. The background is pretty amazing, and really, the sky's the limit with it.

  • Also, its kind of weird how he uses Snake as Kojima's supposed reasoning for not leaving MGS behind, but if MGS4 really is the last game with Snake, that doesn't make a lot of sense.

  • Maybe Kojima will be involved in a Tom Clancy kind of way... meaning not at all. They'll just use his name, and cart him out during shows, and such.

  • You know, in a way I kind of hope this is the end of the series. I love MGS with every fibre of my being, but to give the series a definite, no continues ending would be really awesome. Also, the death of Snake, if handled correctly, could ensure that he'd stay immortalised forever as a gaming icon, incorruptible and eternally young (well, old, you know what I mean), instead of experiencing the gradual decline felt with Sonic, Crash, Spyro, Turok, Lara Croft and countless other characters/series.

  • Im sure Kojima is just tired of working on the same thing these past 10 years or so. After a break of doing something different, I think he will be able to come back and work on another Metal Gear.

  • Yeah, I stopped believing him as well.

  • @Unastheslayer-PSN: completely agree, plus you still got room for in-between shit like MGS:PO in the future, you know? side-stories & such while Kojima's allowed to do, you know, his new Snatcher project, ZOE3, his wii project, uh, that zombie MMORPG? etc. its my favorite series; i dont wanna see it dragged and beaten for cash.

  • last time he directs

  • I'm not sure if this will be the last game or not; but I do recall he said that the previous one was going to be the last one. Yes, that obviously didn't turn out to be true. Having said that, I think it's pretty obvious there'll be more MGS in the future.

  • @TheIrishNinja: Yeah man, I'd be game for anything Koj related. I can't wait to see what he can do with the Wii. Still haven't played Snatchers though

  • It common knowledge Kojima wants to stop making Mgs, the last game he was forced to do after he got death threats if he left.

  • Think about, even if Snake doesn't die of a firey explosion or someone shooting him in the game, he's gonna die of old age. There's a reason Snake is like 65 years old in this one and I don't think it's because Kojima likes old people. And yes, he doesn't like them. How do I know? How many Wii games has Kojima made? None? Thought so.

  • Every time a new MGS release is on the way, he says it's his last MGS game...

  • He said it was his last directing, and he HAS taken a step back on the directing role, since he's co-directing 4. He'll still produce others.

  • Of course not. He still has to finish turning Snake Sr. into Big Boss with moar Portable Ops.

  • Yeah, its what happens when noone else is good enough to do the work...

    Just look at Sonic...
