    Everyone Hates UMD

umd_psp.jpgMore bad news for the UMD, which is already dying a speedy death at retail: not only are stores not stocking them, but no one really wants to buy UMD movies either. Although 40% of PSP owners claimed UMD media was a big reason why they plopped down a few hundred on Sony's pixel-spurting game brick, the complaint from actual owners is there just isn't anything worth goddamn buying on UMD.

Furthermore, in a demonstration of gamers' own schizophrenia, "one-third of PSP owners who don't own non-videogame UMD content say that they are likely to purchase a UMD in the "near future", but on the other hand don't really care about the format that the content is delivered on." So they're likely to buy UMD content in the future... as long as it's not actually released on UMD? Huh?

The UMD report, issued by the NPD Group, points out that game and music are the most popular uses of the PSP. Which is as it should be. Sony should drop UMD entirely from its plans and concentrate more on opening up the PSP to homebrew games and emulators.
