We've long heard that, scientifically speaking, woman are not as good as men at tasks like mathematics. And while my wife, who is incidentally both a psychologist and smarter than me, may disagree with such assertions (or may not), one University of Toronto study has found that video games may give women a leg up in spatial task processing, thereby potentially closing the gap on topics like geometry (...or even driving?).
Our second experiment showed that both men and women can improve their spatial skills by playing a video game and that the women catch up to the men...
Moreover, the improved performance of both sexes was maintained when we assessed them again after five months...Clearly, something dramatic is happening in the brain when we see marked improvements in spatial skills after only 10 hours of game playing and these improvements are maintained for many months.Men, with the advent of vibrators and now this, our species is clearly doomed to a slavery caste where a penis-wearers sole task is stoking the fires that power highly advanced shoe production machinery.

:O
SEXISTS! How dare you insiniuate that women are different from men in any way, shape, or form?
Uh, huh huh yeah. Women are like, stupid, or something.
Bleak future. By 2020, there will be 4 women for each man. Not in China or India, that is...
Oh lord, here come the feminists and their "honor defender" male friends. Keep in mind people, this is based on a study. Have fun arguing with collected evidence that you are not privy to. But it won't stop them. Specialty groups will always rear their ugly heads
@MasterOfPastures:
What are you talking about? That's AWESOME!
@MasterOfPastures: So everyone will get to have four wives? :O
I have no doubts that most of the perceived superiority of men's spacial reasoning is due to the tendency to condition them for tasks that use it. If society didn't pigeonhole each gender into certain roles, you wouldn't even see this gap in the first place.
If RPGs have taught us anything, it is that if you repeat something enough, you can become godly at it! ^_^
@JAcK0R: But... they have boobies... the good kind too... not the Rush Limbaugh kind...
I'd like to posite that women are actually good drivers but any person who puts on make-up, talks on a cell phone, and does their nails while driving is a bad driver. So, as you can see, bad driving is not limited to women. ;-)
Even though I am not a woman, I should show this to my parents and just say "I told you so"
@DaveKap: What guys do you know put on makeup and do their nails while driving? Or do those things at all?
And where can I meet them? >_>
@Ashurahori: Awesome.
I'm a woman and I totally agree with this. :)
@I_Hate_This_Place: OH NOES!
Wait... where are they?
Why is it that the stereotype is that women suck at driving, yet men pay more for insurance?
They have found the source of our power!
I found this study pretty damn interesting. I'd like to get my hands on the actual study itself. Video games are good for so many things, and closing the gender gap can be added to the list.
A skill can be learned? Shocking! And learned from playing a video game? Horrifying!
Told You So.
@DaveKap: Any person who drives and lives while doing their nails, yakking on a cell phone and putting on makeup is a durn good driver. Or durn lucky.
Any more sexist comments? I've started a collection....
And it shall be pushed...
@el_gordo: Indeed. This is truly a dire turn of events, how will we control the world now?
@Chilly Hollow: Seeing as my other comment never showed, here's the short version.
Look at some DMV research and you will see what he listed, as well as other things, are considered driving distractions, and therefore dangerous. Just because most of what he listed happens to fall into the "female activity" category does not make it sexist. Talking on a cell-phone being the only "gender neutral" activity he mentioned.
@ceilingFANBOY: Because statistically, men are worse at driving. But I don't think that's a good enough reason to charge us more for insurance.
@Charron & @Chilly Hollow:
San Francisco. It was a cross dressing joke. C'mon people, keep up with me here!
@I_Hate_This_Place: "Look at some DMV research..."
According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study in 2002, male drivers are about twice as likely to die in auto accidents than female drivers.

Tarzan hunt, Jane pick berry; *grunts*.
In New York, talking on a cell phone while driving is illegal no matter which sex/gender you are, unless you're using a hands-free earpiece thingy.
Also, I've heard that insurance industry studies repeatedly reveal that young male drivers have a much higher rate of accidents than the general driving population, so that's why their premiums are more expensive. I think this levels off over the age of 30 or so. I'm not stating this as fact or saying "men suck at teh driving", just repeating what I've heard.
As long as I produce the life sauce, I've got nothing to worry about.
ajaja, im sleeping in the couch tonight tab FTW!
never fear my male comrades, as long as chocolate exist, the Female Revolution will be firmly held back, that is, until they evolve chocolate immunity, then its every man for himself!
D:
@ach77: Men aren't bad drivers. They are, however, more reckless, and more likely to get into accidents.
Just go to the supermarket 9 times out of 10, the car that is badly parked will ahve been parked by a woman. In that 1/10 times, it will be an asian man :D
@ceilingFANBOY: see: testosterone. Spatial tasking or 'technical skill gets overwhelmed by the penis.
As for bad drivers, that woman i hit when she was trying to make a left turn while i had the right away needed to play more games...
@Steel_Pelican: And? I wasn't arguing who was a better driving, only saying that DaveKap's statement was not sexist.
real shock news here is the fact that... Wilson has a wife? for real? just like yeah crecente looks like a "family man", baschraft too and even fahey yes... but wilson oh NO! no sire
looks so ... childish :p
@Sugoi:
I agree with this.
I'm going to have to practice my irony voice. And pay closer attention to DaveKap. Any jokes should be spelled out s-l-o-w-l-y so I get them, ok?
Hugs from the perfect straight man in CH
i totally agree some women suck at math, cause i suck at math. It's like the hardest thing next to chemistry, ugh i hate diploma exams...
@DaveKap: In my experience, most transvestites walk or take MUNI.
Wow...I don't think you have to be a raging feminist to think that the study wasn't sexist, but holy crap did the blogger fail at satire and zoom in on the offensive.
Seriously, all women apparently do, according to the article, is make shoes and drive badly (apparently we don't but hey, stereotypes suck like that.) I really hope your wife didn't hear this.
Also, scientifically speaking? It's not that women aren't good at math, it's that women are generally assumed to be poor at math and then are not educated as well at math. It's a self-perpetuating stereotype.
@Rebochan: I don't think you have to be a raging misogynist to get a joke.
@DaveKap: Darn, I must be on the wrong coast. :P
I know it was a c/d joke, I was trying to play along here.
@Steel_Pelican: I think the reason for this is that men are more likely to crash from pure recklessness and driving like an asshat while women just crash because they suck at driving and usually only get in fender benders. Most of the time when someone passes you going 85 on the highway it's going to be me...errr... men. If men weren't such aggressive drivers then they wouldn't get in as many accidents.
@I_Hate_This_Place: Uh... Yeah. Artie McStrawman will show up any second now... Wait for it... 3... 2... 1... Huh? Nothing?
