VA Tech's Gaming Connection? Sonic the Hedgehog

ChoSeungHui_468x354.jpg Guess the fear-mongers will need another scapegoat! According to Governor Tim Kaine's Virginia Tech Review Panel final report, video games are not a factor in what cause the horrible VA Tech shooting. Game site GamePolitics has highlighted selected section involving games in Chapter IV: Mental Health History of Seung Hui Cho. Those include:

"He was enrolled in a Tae Kwon Do program for awhile, watched TV, and played video games like Sonic the Hedgehog."

"None of the video games were war games or had violent themes. He liked basketball and had a collection of figurines and remote controlled cars."

"...Cho's roommate never saw him play video games. He would get movies from the library and watch them on his laptop."

So it was the Tae Kwon Do, basketball and remote controlled cars that inspired Seung Hui Cho to go on a rampage! Makes as much sense as pointing the finger at video games. Jack Thompson, Dr. Phil and all the other knobheads who blamed gaming for this terrible massacre should be ashamed.

  • Sonic you bastard.

  • i always knew sonic can make a guy go crazy

Oh god, grasping at straws much?

    lolz@mass media

  • a shocking revelation. unfortunately, this will do nothing to dissuade the hordes of ambulance-chasers who are waiting anxiously to exploit another tragedy.

  • I guess I might be driven to shoot up something to, considering how bad Sonic games have been lately.

  • They should be...but you know they're not. It's a conspiracy! They're hiding the games connection!!

  • I thought it was counterstrike, like he was known for being a cs player?

Not like that adds any relavency, but thought that was the fact is he just happened to play cs.

  • Were recent Sonic games truly that bad for him? Good thing I haven't played them then. Phew!

  • Oh maybe that's why he reached the post office so fast

  • This may sound weird, but I'm really curious which Sonic game it was. Don't know why...

  • Attention "experts": Sometimes people flip out and start shooting. They don't need to play video games for this to occur. Statistically, in all of human history video games have been related to such a small number of murders that it's insignificant as a figure.

More people have probably choked on a french fry than been killed by someone who thought they were Sam Fisher or something.

  • Maybe he was on speed? Afterall he is the fastest thing alive.

  • Sonic probably did cause it because all of his recent games were terrible.

  • After seeing the interview with his roomates, it's fairly obvious what the motivation was.

  • @splines: shh you'll ruin the politicians plan as "looking family friendly", in between getting caught in sex stings in men's bathrooms.

  • Shadow, you da man!

  • Gaming for Columbine.

  • Shadow!! Look what you've done!!
Your black coat and gang mentality is detrimental to society!!!

    /sensationalism

According to Jack Thompson, he talked to his fellow student who said he was an avid CS player. Even when the media called him on it a week later he reiterated that he got information that he was a big counterstrike player. So clearly someone was full of shit. Too bad some idiot shrink already cleared him of being sane... So what else could it be? A disease? Perhaps an infection that diminishes his mental capacity (perhaps in his frontal lobe)?

  • Okay, the guy was sick, honestly sick. His family knew he had a problem when he was little. Anyone who tries to connect this to anything but his illness should be run over by the ambulance they are chasing.

Honestly, I feel sorry for him. Here's a kid who was failed by the health and school systems to the extent of gross negligence. Now, even after his death, people have the gall to blame it on something so trivial video games. This is just another example of everyone playing pass the buck. In the end everyone is so focused on the "evils" of the world that the real problem never gets fixed.

  • The problem is there isn't going to be a half a dozen interviews, on 24 hour news stations, with "experts" explaining that games did not have anything to do with this incident. These jackasses pushed their ridiculous agenda, got sometime in front of a camera and now the networks have other aspects of this tragedy to sensationalize. No time to point out that these idiots have no idea what they are talking about and are just chasing disasters so they can blame games before any real information is uncovered.

  • Those highlights read a lot like, "We tried everything in our power to connect this to video games, really, but we'll have to get our jollies from the next massacre."

  • Wow, all the ingenious Sonic jokes in this thread are so brilliant and insightful that I feel enlightened for having read them. Please, continue posting more of them.

  • I will just sit back and wait for that retraction to be plastered all over the news now.

    *waiting*

    *waiting*

    *still waiting*

  • @天人: deal!
sonic um.... made me kill a flying squirrel?(wtf is tales?)
i got nothing, much like the media.

  • @天人: I will.

  • I say we ban basketball right now. There is a clear link between basketball and violence.

I recently conducted a study to assess the impact that basketball has on violent behaviour. I put one group of people in a quiet room and had them play snakes and ladders, while the other group played a basketball game in front of a small but vocal crowd.

After the game was completed, there was a clear difference between the two groups. The group who played basketball clearly had elevated levels of adrenaline, talked more loudly, and were more likely to exhibit aggressive behaviour. Some of the subjects even showed aggression during the match itself. This clearly shows that basketball leads to violent behaviour.

Something needs to be done immediately about basketball. It is a menace and is corrupting our children. This revelation about Seung Hui Cho just reinforces this fact.

  • That explains everything, the shitty quality of Sonic games even pisses me off.

    UNRELATED STORY:

So today, I decided to turn on my Xbox 360 and play some Halo 2, in preparation for Halo 3, so that I was all practiced up. When I turned the console on, I discovered some strange lines on the screen, so I turned it off and turned it back on. When I turned it on again, there were 3 red lights staring me in the face. So with a dramatic NOOOOO!, I turned the console off and on again and it still didn't work. I even took the HDD off to reset the chip, and it still messed up.

This sucks in itself, but the worst part of it is, the average time to get a console repair is 6 weeks right now. As you may have assumed, that means I won't have a console for Halo 3, which I pre-ordered. This is definitely proof that it doesn't matter what you do, Xbox 360 consoles just break. I say this because, I took such good care of my console since I knew how fragile they are. I mean, I treated it like it was my baby, since I don't really have much money.

Anyway, I just wanted to vent a little bit, and tell someone about it. If anyone knows how I can contact Steve Ballmer, that would be great. I hear he's pretty liberal with his Xbox 360's.

  • @Foggynotion: Note about my last post. It was in no way a joke, I was just commenting on how the film Bowling for Columbine was called so because the killers took a bowling class together, and even bowled the morning of the massacre. An innocent activity that in now way contributed to their behavior, yet was a shared social experience. Sorry if anyone thought it was insensitive.

  • Wait, if Sonic the Hedgehog made Cho Seung a killer, than what'll happen to someone who played years of Uniracer on the SNES, LIKE ME!? OH GOD!

  • Im sure both Mr. Thompson and Mr. Phil will apologize promptly for making such a mistake.

  • Aha so it was TV! And if not Tv, then rock and roll!

I used to do Taekwon do, and I watch Tv, and I played sonic games. OH NO! Oh wait I don't like basketball or remote control cars. It's good.

I do hate the way that rather than people just saying. The guy had problems, they have to find a scapegoat. Video games are just the new target. The older generation didn't really have them in the form they are today, and many don't understand or play them. So it's easy to make them fear it.

  • HA! What do you have to say know Mr. Thompson? Got another fucking bullshit far-stretched lie under your sleeves?

  • @Hand_O_Death: You'll be waiting until the end of time when atoms rip apart.
Retractions on stories such as "VIDEO GAMES KILL LOL" happen just as much on retractions on stories such as "THIS PLANE CRASHED. THEREFORE ALL PLANE WILL CRASH."

    You get my point.

  • i bet he gone crazy after the bestiality thing.

    Shame on Sega.

  • See? See? THIS is what you get for introducing Shadow's guns.

  • I wonder if he did any side kicks or jumping spinning hook kicks to anyone before. I mean, hell, I did back when I did TKD before doing Muay Thai and Judo instead.

And I knew Sonic would one day be the cause of something horrible. I used to think it was my friend's rampage after playing the new Sonic game for PS3, but this... damn...

  • Well, Sonic games have been sucky lately...

At any rate, pointing fingers doesn't do anything. The only person truly responsible for it is dead, and the only thing that can be done now is put measures in place so something like this doesn't happen again.

Why do people always feel the need to blame something? If you want to blame something, blame the 'man' who pulled the trigger. Not the shows he watched, not the games he played, not the books he's read.

  • Whats so freaky is the fact that a pyscho kid who used to go to my school was also a sonic fan.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 09:56 PM on 08/30/07 *

I seriously dont see why the media isnt facing the real problem which was those rather fucked up plays he wrote.

Now that was some disturbing shit, not to mention apparently the teacher did try to take it up with the "higher" powers at the uni, but nothing came out of that.

Heres a link that still has a sample of his plays. Take a look at it for those who are curious or have not seen them before.

Clearly those should have been warnings enough to warrant something. Follow the link below for a student in a separate incident where a violent piece of writing leads to his arrest.

Anyways, after checking this stuff out, would be interested in hearing what some of you people think.

  • Image of Atheist Jew Atheist Jew at 10:02 PM on 08/30/07 *

Why is it so hard for people to simply accept the fact that the guy was fucking wacko-fruitcake-batshit-insane and move on? The guy was paranoid, and scared, and psychotic.

  • @Marlor:
    Yay for you. Well put.

  • @Atheist Jew: But... it's not nice to hold a person accountable for their actions. That's mean.

  • blaming sonic...geez ,I'd blame shadow the hedgehog for having weapons in his game. This is like using samus as a scapegoat. It reminds me of all those "I'm going to Listen To Linkin Park." Posters

  • Well, to be honest reading Sonic fanfics do occasionally make me enraged enough to kill.

  • Maybe if he dyed his hair blue and spiked it and then went on to do rolling jumps onto the victims of VT, maybe Sonic would have been the culprit.

  • Why are we still going over this? We've known for several months that games didn't cause anything. In fact, I think it was close to week after it happened.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 11:10 PM on 08/30/07 *

@Digitalguardian: Becuase the media / political figures are blood thirsty pricks who will try anything to get peoples attention. :/

  • Playing Sonic on the PS3 is enough to send just about anyone on a murderous rampage.

  • Where that kid went, he won't be needing video games.
I really wish America would stop pointing fingers at media outlets and instead take responsibility for what us as a society has done to allow this to happen. If he played video games or not, or even what the themes behind those videos were makes no difference. There were clear signs of his mental anguish and no one listened.

If Sonic happened to be Doom instead, would his actions suddenly then be scientifically explained by the "School Shooting Experts"? Most likely.
Would Doom have actually contributed to his actions? Most likely not.

    /Rant

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 11:22 PM on 08/30/07 *

Im rather pissed off at the fact that the dipshit brought bad press to one of my favorite handguns, the Walther P22. :/

  • I'm glad that they were able to rule out video games. People are always looking for a scapegoat.. this guy must be held accountable for his own actions. Jack Thompson pointing out video games, just to try to prove his (so far proven false) argument.

  • @JAcK0R: @Heyyou27: @Gamemaster: @Jesse in Japan: @Heliophage: @flatluigi:

I am so late to this party it's not even funny. So just insert some joke about the lack of quality of Sonic Next-Gen/Shadow the Hedgehog/Sonic Riders, and we're cool.

  • this is what happens when sonic and the secret rings gets too hard to be fun

  • Hitler liked to paint, and I like to paint too.

    OMG what have I become!!!!!

  • Oh god, I knew it! It was blast processing! Get it? Blast?

  • FUCK YOU EGGMAN11

    bang bang

Next, bank robbery blamed on super mario bros.

    "GIMME THE COINS!"

    Nintendogs linked to animal abuse.

    F*cking SIT!

  • Genocide City must have brainwashed him.

  • "Doctor, ever since playing Sonic the Hedgehog, I've just had these...urges...to display this rad 1990's era XTREME ATTITUDE designed to market to teenagers."

"However, it's not just that. Lately, I've been looking for boxes to count, with absurd amounts of periodical loading times in between."

"But the worst effect? I'm feeling a steadily-rising need to kiss a member of another species. Help me."

  • It sucks that those that claim the massacre was caused by violent video games will never admit this.
