For those of you looking for some last minute little holiday gifts of the Final Fantasy sort, the new set of Final Fantasy IV Trading Arts Mini Figs have arrived on SCSX. Figures will be sold by the case for $39.99 plus shipping. Each case contains nine figures in "blind boxes" but NCSX claims that each one will contain a complete set of figures plus three duplicates. It might be iffy actually getting these in time for the holiday, but a late Final Fantasy figure set is better than no Final Fantasy figure set. NCSX's description of the figures made me laugh...
Six recognizable characters are featured in the set including the ebon-armored Cain Highwood, the gruff Cid Pollendina, and the strangely effeminate Cecil Harvey.
Strangely effeminate? Doesn't that pretty much sum up every male Final Fantasy character ever created?

Heh. They look decent though. Probably just me, but out of everyone there, Cid looks exactly the same from the original. Everyone has minor tweaks to their look except him. Still cool, though.
What the hell? Why didn't they make one of Adult Rydia? Epic failure.
Looks good to me, I might have to pick up a set.
Cecil Affeminate?,he is more manly than Tidus and the guy from FFXII!
I really like the new look of Edge.
Aw, no golddude?
No, there was a time when men were men in Final Fantasy. Look at Cecil's character portrait here: [finalfantasy.wikia.com]
The stark lines that came so easy to 16-bit sprites were too tempting even for Square to create hard nosed manly men. Its the transition to polygons where additional edges were costly that Square began to devolve men into moeblobs.
They are sure cute, but no way compared to Amano's style. If there is a Amano style figurings then I would gladly buy!
@ミスター X: I'm going to second that statement.
Cecil always looked effeminate to me after his transition. Granted the on map/field sprite looked a little manly, cause the shoulders looked broad, but the face always screamed "Girly Man" to me. I just took it as the typical great looking good guy look. But I agree with ???? X and Draconis, this style is not what I like, third for Amano's style. Heh... 128lbs...
I'd love Amano-style figures too. They'd be a nice counterpoint to the deluge of Nomura-style figures.
But at $40 I might have to buy these. I was just playing FFIV yesterday.
Hey where's Polom and Porom?!?! They're my favorite characters besides Rydia.
@kimba28: Square Enix is going to launch a Lawn Ornament collection too and expect those two to show up in the first batch. ;D
now the real question is do i buy these now or wait till the u.s. squeenix store gets them in for possibly cheaper.
I miss the really old way they were depicted in Nintendo power... Anyone remember that? That was a fairly interesting depiction.
yoshitaka amano draws very androgynous characters. I don't think you would've ever mistaken Cloud, Squall, or even Zidane very women. A besides, what about the whole knight in full armor. He's hardly androgynous. What exactly is the problem with an 'effeminate' man anyway?
@Witzbold: That comment was forged in the fires of awesome and made of pure win.
@D1498: Who did Design the characters in FF 9? They don't look like Tetsuya Nomura's designs.
@Witzbold: Thanks, I really wonder what they're going to look like but I don't intend on buying them.
Effeminicity ROCKS, oy!
I already bought those on playasia last week. I also got the FF3 ones earlier this year. I'm a sucker for figures, I also have alot of pokemons and some pretty old mario figs from when I was a kid. The Big Daddy in the middle of all my collection of small figures is really weird but it's funny. Oh, I also have some Naruto ones...
@kimba28: Amano did, but they didn't translate well into polygonal models.
Liked the designs, though.
@kimba28: That would be Mr. Yoshitaka Amano who did the character design work for FF 9. His last work, after such a long absence, as the main designer in a FF game.
Wow, these look real neat. Wonder how much the entire set is.
Oh how i love gaming merchandise. If these come over to Blighty then i may just buy them.
@ridleysaria:
My thoughts exactly.
If you call Strago or Cyan Garamonde as efeminates you have some serious issues.. lol
But as far as I know there isn´t Final Fantasy games before FFVII, right? sigh... everthing turned into a j-pop concert after that.
These are great little figures. I picked up a full box of nine a little over a week ago, and couldn't be happier!
It would be nice to have the Tellah and Edward figures though...I'll have the old man call Ed a Spoony Bard all day in my mind.
@Heiae: @KeroseneClimax: I thought so, but I wasn't 100% sure. I liked the designs in Final Fantasy 9 EXCEPT Kuja's and Amarant's.
Not as good as FFIII trading arts.
@ridleysaria: because loli Rydia is superior
I ordered one individual on play asia for 6.00, I dont know what one I will get but its a cheep gift for myself relating to a game I love.
these look great!
@talisein: Uh, what? Amano's original picture of Cecil is as effeminate as any FF hero that's ever been. [images1.wikia.nocookie.net]
I always thought Kain's name was spelled with a 'K', not a 'C'. Or was that another change Nintendo made since Cain could be associated with the Bible story with Adam and Eve's kids?
End of the line! No religious references for you!
Faaaaaaantastic. I'll have to order these as soon as Holiday Madness(tm) ends this year.
They're selling these in all the geek-toy stores here in Taiwan. Bought a box on Saturday and yep, it had one of each plus a few duplicates.
This is the 3rd series they've brought out now that I know of. Before this was Final Fantasy 3, then the one with Cloud, Rinoa Heartily, Yuna, Vaan and Penelo.
@D1498: Because that's all they ever have for main characters in Final Fantasy anymore. Anything gets boring if you do it over and over again.
I for one, have never been a fan of Amano's designs--though I don't dislike them. Meh.
As usual, Cid rocks!
*sends a warm goodbye kiss to $39.99 plus shipping*
SOLD!
ugh 40$ for that?
