A Kotaku reader from Sweden sends word that the country's largest morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter ("The Daily News") is running an article that confirms the obvious 2006 release date and stirs up pricing speculation. The papers says:
According to Patrik Johansson at Nintendo's Swedish general agency, the price for a Wii-console will be between 2500-3000 kronor, a few thousand kronor less than the competitors consoles. Wii will be launched globally at the end of 2006.
Currency exchange site XE.com tell us that US $1 = 7.35 SEK. So the Wii's 2,500-3,000 kronor price may convert to US $340 - US $400, but our reader points out that Swedish prices are typically just ten times the American ones. Thus, the Xbox 360 Premium retails at $400 in the US and 4000 kronor in Sweden. This would put the Wii in the $250-$300 ballpark, which is higher than the assumed $199 price tag.
Eds. Note: Sweden tends to have high consumer electronics taxes.
