Over the weekend, a rumor swirled, saying that Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg was helming the World of Warcraft film adaptation. An avid gamer who regularly attends E3, Spielberg seemed like a fairly logical choice. Moreover, the director has a close relationship with Universal Pictures, which used to be part of media monolith Vivendi, current owner of WoW's developer-publisher Blizzard. (You see, all those Hollywood types are all in-bred.)

The Spielberg WoW reports were attributed to Variety—yet the Hollywood trade magazine contains no mention of such a deal. A Blizzard rep tells GameSpot, "No final determinations have been made at this time. We're working closely and carefully with [production company] Legendary Pictures on ensuring that the team that forms around this epic production will be equipped to fully capture the Warcraft universe on film. We look forward to revealing further details about the cast and crew in the months ahead."

Spielberg or not, I'm very curious to see how this MMORPG will be adapted for the silver screen, and the game's addicted rabid fan base translates into box office dollars. Brian Ashcraft
