Sony Forecasts Loss On PS3, But No Fist Fights?

That behemoth console known as the PlayStation 3 looks set not only to make consumers' lives miserable, but Sony's finacial statement as well. "On the surface the forecast looks bad," says Daiwa SB Investment's Koichi Ogawa.

Sony predicts huge loses on the PS3, accumulating a 100 billion yen operating loss as the company preps for the next-gen console launch. The electronics maker is gunning to sell 6 million units by March 2007, but is likely to run into the same problems that plagued Microsoft.

"We believe that we can lower costs dramatically (on the PS3) through chip shrinkage and by cutting the number of parts, but there is no way to avoid high costs in the first year," Sony Senior Vice President Takao Yuhara explained.

Sony selling at a loss, we can live with. But is there anyway to avoid long lines, console shortages and general mayhem? Dumb question, I know.
