During today's Quake Con keynote the id folks announced that they have a team of developers working on a little pet project called Quake Zero.
QZ will be a free web-based version of Quake 3 multiplayer. Todd Hollenshead told me they decided to kick off this project for several reasons. First and foremost, id hated to see their game, once quite popular for online matches, losing its prominence in the online gaming scene, this will allow virtually anyone with a computer to play matches of their games.
Hollenshead said id also wanted to dip their toe in in-game advertising, and that this seemed like the best way to approach it. So expect ads to be running on the web page when you play Quake Zero, but free games for ads seem absolutely fine to me.

I'm more excited about this than Rage. Anything fun that's free is nice.
WOOHOO!!! More free please
I love Quake III, but when I heard the name "Quake Zero", I was really hoping id was going to make a new game set in the original Quake universe.
They really need to do that. It'd be awesome.
quake 3 cost like 20 dollar and the source is free...LOL
This is cool, I'll check it out. Yeah, I don't have problems with ads in free games -- I have problems with ads in games I pay for. I just don't buy them.
Consider me ignorant, but what do they mean by "web-based"... it's not gonna be running off a web site like a flash game right?
@LORDofDANCE:
cheap bastage =P
Awesome. Can't wait to see if the site is barred by my work proxy.
Definately down with in game advertising when a game is totally free.
Now why cant we get some cheaper games up in here that use IGA?
yea Quake 3 arene must continue, cause all the shooters ive played since quake 3 are too slow, quake3 is the only pure FPS, its just about the mutiplayer battle, no history just battle...
Q3 isn't dead. It just went into another direction. The original is still played, just not as much these days. Instead the source was turned upside down, and a few Open Source versions were released. The top ones I tend to play a lot are Open Arena, Padman, and Warsow. Check them out.
whatever happened to open arena? thats free. also, i bought ultimate quake a few days ago, was this a bad time to buy it?
Finally a FPS my computer can support!
Freaking awesome!!!
But how bad are the graphics?
@HugoDePayenz:
If they can get it close to the original then the graphics should be fine. Its actually still a good looking game when running with all the bells and whistles enabled.
a free version of quake online? the gaming gods have heard my prayers!!!!!!!!!! or maybe not, but its still awesome news
Best news from id in a long time.
@mashuren: I'd like to see them do that instead. This is good, however.
Wii compatible please. :D
This will be such a boredom cure @ school!
This would be great, many of my friends and I would love to get back to playing Q3A. I can't find my copy and do not feel like purchasing a game that has very little support now.
"Enjoy Quake! Brought to you by Kellogg's Fruit Loops! Follow your bloody nose!"
I can see it now.
Fucking lame.
ehh we'll see how it goes... not too sure about R(insert anarchy symbol here)GE
Maybe if Quake 4 multiplayer wasn't so lame = /
Paid advertising actually making something free? About fucking time!
Can't wait to spend endless hours playing this online.
The real question is...can my computer handle this?
Little by little advertising is taking over games... Sure the price is free now for an old game, but soon we'll be paying FULL price for new games WITH ads. (meaning no benefit to us)
The reason? Lower development costs.
Yes, that's all fine and dandy, but what about mods? To be honest I('ve?) never actually played Quake 3, so I don't know aything about its mod scene, however, I can assume that it had (has?) its share of good mods. So, before I start rambling I'll just say it: Give us the mods, id! Give us the mods!

I've already delicious'd this, but it's worth repeating. Quake 3, in a web browser? HAPPINESS! Okay, taking two days off to get a last blast in Disneyland. Going to be there all day tomorrow and all day Tuesday, back to normal biz on Weds!
