OK, you've had an hour or so to argue, debate and decide which games you thought should receive which nominations, including the cherished Best of Show accolade. Now it's our turn. Before you hit the jump to see our picks know this, there was a whole lotta arguing that led up to these final selections and on more than one occasion it came down to votes... on one occasion that vote tied and we had to debate the issue for awhile. Also keep in mind that we made these choices based off of the very specific definitions that The Game Critics Awards follows. So Best of Show gives a lot of weight to buzz. Also, there were two categories that we didn't feel had three worthy nominations, so we didn't include them. They were fighting game and simulation game.
We'll be posting up our own Kotaku awards later this week, but for now hit the jump and start complaining.

Wow, no Metroid anywhere?
Umm, no metroid, no uncharted... wtf?
Metroid was a blit bland. I'm more surprised GT5 isn't on the racing or graphics list!
Don't forget. To be nominated a game had to be playable. So no Killzone 2, no Mario Kart Wii, no Super Smash Bros, no Echromosome, no MGS4, no GT5...
Nonplayable games eligible? Hell why not nominate all the pre rendered CGI stuff :P ? Kind of reminds me of Oblivion. Beautiful looking game but If I spend an hour in the editor, I can make a single room look better than Crysis.
Uncharted is an action adventure, and we wanted to include it but that means it had to beat out these:
Best Action/Adventure Game:
1. Super Mario Galaxy
2. The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass
3. Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools of Destruction
4. Folklore
5. Assassin's Creed
@twesterm: Yeah, what happened to Metroid! :[
Haha, it's seems pretty fair actually. :P
A lot of interesting choices there, Kotaku.
*in before angry fanboys*
Why does Rock Band come first in Best of Show, but third in Best Console game?
@Kuraudo: Because the showing for it probably had more enthusiasm.
Read the definition of best of show here.
Brian, it makes sense only listing MGS and Killzone as best of show (non-playable), but I do have to admit...no Uncharted?
I'm completely smitten with that game and would put it up there with releases like Ratchet, BioShock and Little Big Planet in excitement.
Ok, I'm done whining.
S
Oh, and IMO, Jenga should've totally won best of show.
:-p
What? You rated MGS4 higher in terms of graphics than Killzone2? I think Killzone2 should be #1, Mass Effect #2, and MGS4 #3. Not saying MGS4 had bad graphics, it doesn't at all, but imho these two games are superior.
Anyway, many 360 exclusives in that list, and I'm not surprised about Rock Band. Not only was Moore excellent(ly hilarious), but the game is a must have for when you have friends around.
@crecente:
So instead of going for uniqueness and a new franchise you went with 3 sequels? I also think that Zelda should have to compete as an RPG. But it's all good, I just am more stoked for uncharted than most of those games.
glad to see COD4 on the list so many times. My favorite game of the show.
@Crecente: What you say is valid. I suppose I felt that Uncharted should beat out Folklore. If anything, I'm that much more excited for Folklore after seeing that.
@EVULCOW: I don't think the numbering has anything to do with it since these are the picks and not the winners.
I'm surprised that I see wiifit more than 1 time o_O
CoD4 is a great pick for Best of Show. That game is blowing everyone away, despite all the skepticism over moving into the modern era. The others seem much less unexpected or more controversial.
wow, can't believe uncharted didnt make best action/adventure game but then again looking at that list, cant argue with that list, except assasin 'its a TRAAAAP' creed
Aside from the lack of Metroid, that list is pretty dead on. No complaints here. Thank you for acknowledging Zak and Wiki along with Dewey's Adeventure. I'm looking forward to both of those on the Wii.
Goooo LittleBigPlanet! Didn't realise Mass Effect and Tools of Destruction were playable this year. If only Kojima had decided to let MGS4 be playable at E3, that'd be right up there.
@Glluttony:
I'm surprised to see it at all, to be the best original game don't you have to be a game? Wii-fit is an exercise tool. It's like calling a Suzanne Summers workout video a movie. It's silly.
oh and one other thing i didnt see,
I dont know if i can live in a world where halo3 didnt garner any nominations at e3 for best of anything... or was halo3 not playable?
@sascha23: Ahhh. Oki then :)
Yeah, personally i think the best action adventure list was by far the hardest to select, mostly because we could only list five. There were several that didn't make the list and we all really liked Uncharted, but it came down to, was it good enough to bump Folklore (hell, no) and was it good enough to bump assassin's creed (not really). But still a great game. Easily number six out of an incredibly amazing list of games.
Most of the choices makes sense. Though I was expecting GT5 to be "best" graphics, and Wii Fit being so high is kind of bleh. Afterall Sony did a game like it already. But I suppose it being more mainstream gets it the votes. And of course since its Nintendo. Most of the people who played Wii Fit enjoyed it. But it almost seems like they enjoyed it because they didn't expect to. Is it really enjoying it as a real game? Or are they enjoying it because they are trying to beat their "scores". Is that worthy of such a high spot on best of lists? It seems that the combination of simple addictive gameplay like Geometry Wars and Wii Sports mixed with the popularity with the mainstream for the Wii, and it using a new piece of hardware has made it rise up on the list.
This is just my opinion but GT5 will be the greatest videogame of all time.
@meltyman:
Maybe it's just that Halo isn't that great of a game?
Wait, Little Big Planet wasn't in Best of Show!?... But its so... awesome. You Weren't talking about it on the plane and to your friends when you returned home!?
I will pass it off as a typo, this time... watch yourself Crecente.
*That won't get me banned or anything, will it?*
"Best RPG:
1. Mass Effect"
Yes.
"Best Racing Game:
1. Burnout: Paradise
2. Stuntman: Ignition"
Come on, Kotaku, you know better. No, no, no, a thousand times no!
What confuses me is that Rock Band wins "best of show" yet it is the third best console game. I clearly think Crysis should of gotten more love than Fallout 3 in the "best of show" category. But I can expect your picks cause of the simple fact that the Kotaku team actually got hands-on with most of these games and I didn't.
P.S. Glad to see Wii-Fit getting some love. The ratio of Wii's to Wii-Fit games is going to be sick, most likely something like 3:1. For every three people that have a Wii one of them will have Wii-Fit.
No Mario Galaxy for Special Commendation: Graphics? Obviously it's not on par with the others mentioned, but I think Nintendo should be commended for making such a beautiful game on the Wii.
Also, no Contra 4 on the handheld list = lose.
Two things: One: kudos to the Best of E3 organizers to NOT having best of PS3, best of X360, best of Wii categories. Yes, there's console and PC, but it implies you looked at ALL games in their genres, not platforms. And two: If Metroid 3 and Uncharted aren't anywhere to be seen, that's a damn fine string of games coming this year. Strip down all the whining about the E3 presentation, and you've got a high-quality list of games. There's very little difference between 1 and 5 in quality in those lists, IMO.
@Gamemaster:
So you want to say "Hey, nothing terribly impressive, but it's good for your crappy hardware, so bravo"?
lol, aren't video game journalists supposed to know a little bit about video games?
And i'm surprised that nobody says anything about the wii Party Station :) That's really an interesting choice, but it's funny
@soulscreme: Why would Zelda be a RPG? I've heard this statement many times and it still doesn't make sense to me. Please elaborate.
@Cartman86: thats the main reason people play games like pacman and tetris. In order to beat there scores.
@soulscreme: It's a game. It's a playable disc, no matter the context. If what you said is true then the "casual games" denomination is unnecessary, right?
@soulscreme: It is impressive.
@SomeRandomGuy:
Because as far as I know that's what it's marketed as. I don'tknow what it really is, doesn't seem similar enough to the other games in the category.
@SomeRandomGuy:
Well, essentially it has an inventory system, leveling, and quests. It's an RPG in very basic terms.
@Gamemaster:
No, no it's not. Not when it's competing with Mass Effect and MGS4.
@Gamemaster:
Umm, if it comes on a disk it's a game?
So then workout videos are the same as movies?
Is the PS2 HHD Utility Disk a game?
If Echochrome was playable I think that and LBP would've had a good fight as to who wins most original. Echo has the original graphic design, but LBP has the free roaming physics gameplay that let's you build anything.
@justhesh
By that definition God of War's multiple weapons and increasing life bar make it an RPG.
I'm out for a while, can't wait to see the Nintendo fanboy horde folling me home with lit torches.
@soulscreme: When I said "playable" I meant interactive. I mean, when a "video" medium can be interactive- IE play "games", why isn't it a "video game"? Just because it uses a peripheral? Because it's casual?
@stranger678:
God of War has an inventory? Not that I ever saw. A menu yes, inventory no.
I know it's something of a known quantity given the public beta, but no Warhawk for online multiplayer, with only 4 games on the list?
Wow, COD 4 over Bioshock, eh?
I can't wait to get my hands on both of them...
Wii fit is not fucking original. People have been stretching and doing push ups for YEARS
