1990: Nintendo releases the SNES in Japan. They go on to sell 49 million units worldwide, a number that was certainly aided by Super Mario World, which also made its debut today. I still remember reading an old Nintendo Power when the development team admitted they'd wanted a dinosaur since Super Mario Bros., but couldn't pull it off properly with the hardware. If I could only play one game on one system for the rest of my life, it would be Super Mario World on the SNES. But no one cares about me, what are your great SNES moments??
1991: Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for SNES in Japan. But that's not all that happened with Zelda today...
1992: Sega releases Sonic 2 for Genesis in Japan. The title is a more than worthy follow-up to its predecessor, and the touch that a second player could control Tails was genius. But anyone think this might have been a shot at Nintendo? Nah.
1998: Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for N64 in Japan. It's widely considered the best Zelda game of all time, and by some, the best videogame ever made. No witticisms necessary.
Hit the jump for one more biggie.
2004: Nintendo releases Nintendo DS (...it was late) in the US (before Japan). I'll admit it, I thought this would be another Virtual Boy, Powerglove novelty. But why not have two screens, especially when one offers an entirely different way to interact with the game?
Too many great things happened today - it's like eating a 10-course meal of bacon topped with deep fried double chocolate cake and covered in gravy.
