This Day in Gaming, March 15th

200px-ResidentEvilRegion2.jpg1998: EA releases SimCity 3000 for PC in the US. A key new feature? Waste management. You know, like Tony.

2002: Sony releases Resident Evil for soon to be tortured movie audiences throughout the United States. And I know there are a handful of fans reading this. And I know that Milla Jovovich may be beautiful/awesome/perfect in every way, but these movies have been nothing short of absolute evil that shouldn't be allowed to sit in the same room with the zombified fecal matter of the video game series they've bastardized. Not that I have an opinion.

  • I don't know really, as I actually found both movies to be entertaining enough, especially for video game based flicks. I am not saying that they were anything other than trashy B movie horror flicks, but seriously they were leagues above anything Uwe Boll ever directed.

There were some tense moments in part 1 and part two was actually a solid enough straight out action flick, minus the suspense of the first movie. They will never and should never win awards, but saying they are evil is a tad much.

  • Milla is alright. But honestly, I think the film adaptations weren't half bad. They did what they could with the material they were based off of. :)

  • RE movies require you to completely turn off your brain to enjoy them. Kind of like DOA or Charlie's Angels films. To be fair though these RE films are second gen bastardizations because the RE games were bastardizations of every single ounce of George Romero's zombie films. Capcom even slapped a disclaimer on Dead Rising that pretty much said, "Yeah.. this was your idea George and we're making more money on it than you. Sayonara Baka ka!"

  • I saw the boom mic in at least five different shots during Resident Evil. That's honestly all I can remember of the movie.

  • I thought the first movie had a decent narrative and good cinematography (the memory flashback scenes were well filmed). Milla and the rest of the cast were believable enough, and you can never have too many sequences of slow motion MP5K fire. Even the score by Marilyn Manson rocked decently.

The second movie though, yeck. Any bit of humble or cool was tossed out to make way for running straight down the side of a building (pretense to Ultra-Violet, I guess.)

  • RE movies are the perfect example of why it's ok to say some movies are like video games. If the RE movies were anything like the video games, they would have been good. Milla Jovovic isn't pretty enough to help those movies. The new one looks even worse.

  • Resi: Apocalypse was much better, simply because it had Sienna Guillory in that oh-so-strapless blue top. However that was counterbalanced by the dawning realisation that Anderson is just using the films as a vehicle for this "Alice" character he'd made up, who seems to be a Whedonesque cyborg psychic.

  • @FightingChance: "the first movie had a decent narrative and good cinematography"

    lol

The first film shown the boom mic pop in at the top of the screen all the time. They my as well film it while the crew was still painting the set and eating lunch in the background with those kind of standards.

  • Really? That is embarrassing then.

Maybe I meant it had good storyboarding - the initial pan through sequence of The Hive, the breaking of the vial that contained the virus, the shot of the bullet casing hitting the ground with the Umbrella engraving, etc. I liked these from an artistic standpoint - at least they were different.

  • I enjoyed the first move very much. I also heard that the reason it's not a movie adaptation of one of the games is because Capcom told him he couldn't do that.

The second movie was meh. I do remember the adverts for it and getting really psyched about it only to let it kinda slip by when it hit theaters... Then again, I just kinda stopped going to movies after age 15 or so. Only recently started seeing movies in theaters again recently. And that's just so I have a way to hang out with my friends that I barely ever see anymore.

  • I own both RE movies and really don't like them. I buy everything with zombies on it I can. No matter how bad.

  • Not only was it probably the best movie ever but it was educational too, all this time I thought black people weren't made of chocolate, all through school my teachers told me that, but no this movie proves it, black people + most pointless laser system = delicious black people bites that melt in your hand mmmmm now that's good eats!

  • To be fair, having a boom mic visible in a scene is typically not the fault of the filmmaker, but of the projectionist. In a great number of films, boom mics are visible in several scenes, but if the projectionist has the aperture gate set up properly, you never see them. However, if a projectionist forgets to change the plate from a previous film's showing, viewers might be able to see more of the printed film than they are supposed to.

    TMYK.

  • I enjoyed the RE films :P

  • Wahh! the Resi's are ok, sure they will never be the greatest film ever, but theyre definately watchable. No need to put them in the Super Mario Bros / AVP / Uwe Boll catagory! Something to watch on a sunday night when you dont want to concentrate too much. Then again I will watch anything that has a Jill lookalike in.

On a side note I watched Super Mario Bros last night (as gf had never seen it and I felt like punishing her) Can someone please tell me why the statue of liberty is in the goomba dimension? It has been troubling me all day.

    Milla Jovovic = Win.

The RE movies were ok and all but they could have at least kept facts from the game straight. The whole "virus" part of the story was so fubared.

  • These moves are great! If they didn't have the Resident Evil name on it to compare them too, you would all love it. I agree that the games have alot more to them than the movies, but by themselves they have a great story, and a great leading lady. And the newest installment, Extinction, looks even better than the rest.

  • Even if these movies are half-way watchable, it's still disparaging to their source material that they're nowhere near the quality of RE4. A game that well-made and polished deserves a movie franchise of similar quality.

Better for all of us to avoid supporting these cash-ins and watch clever, original zombie movies like 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead.

  • Super Mario Bros can never be topped. All other adaptations should just stop now if there isn't a club scene with the protagonist trying to retrieve a necklace from an obese woman named after a fish enemy.

    I'm watching this movie again.

  • @ Edgey, seriously don't attempt this. I really really struggled with a bottle of wine to get through it. The whole scene in the police station with Mario's name being Mario Mario and Luigi's being Luigi Mario could kill you. At least get someone to supervise you incase you catch fire or something!

  • RE1 actually worked as perfect prequel to the original, and even has James "Marc Antony" Purefoy. Good effects, clear action. It worked, and was a bit better than the other bloody action movie out at the time... Blade 2, a step back from the original.

RE2... I couldn't even make it five minutes in. Cut cut cut cut cut cut cut STOP. Watching something outside of the game universe worked. Watching a rehash of RE2 & RE3 just blew chunks.

  • I like RE1. It was pretty cool.

  • I kinda enjoyed the first movie, if only because I was able to detach it from the series. Alone, it made a decent film, but nothing great. It had zombies, it had a licker, oh boy. But it was just a movie set in the RE world.

Then the second movie came along.. and it was ridiculous, since it included elements of the games.. and in a not so good way. sigh.

  • Eh, I liked both of the Resident Evil movies. They were not THAT bad and I could honestly say they provided sufficient entertainment... at least for me, anyway. We had more than 30 hours of gameplay to have the story develop while they barely had, and this is a guess, 3 hours to cram parts of the story together. Give em a break people!

And for those of you who noticed the boom mic's and were not already know that they were there, I am not surprised if you did not enjoy the movie because you spent so much time looking for things to complain about - Probably decided you were not going to like the movie that much even before you had seen it.

  • I like RE1. Milla Jovovich is perfect. Just perfect.

  • I hope to whatever that no one ever ever Ever for the love of all that is sweet and holy EVER makes an RE-4 film. I mean, that game is such a cinematic experience as it is. It's like playing a good action/thriller movie. Except that if you aren't paying attention you get stabbed in the neck. Bitch, this ain't a cutscene! Press A! PRESS A!

  • The Resident Evil movie may not have been great but as far as movies based on games go it is probably the best one there is. And I think that Uwe Boll is being paid to make sure that that is the way it stays.

  • RE2 was very bad. However I thought the first one worked. I am a huge fan of George Romero and let's face it, if he's not directing, the movie is only second rate. But what are you looking for in a zombie movie. Suspense, gore, action, scares. I think the first one delivers in all this, and it gave a pretty neat fit to how the first game started. But taking the Alice character and running away on its own ruined everything else to come. I have no hope for the new movie.

  • @Hengst2404: That's pretty much how I feel. Especially the Uwe Boll part.

  • I'm surprised most of you didn't like it. I only saw the first one, and I saw it before I really played any of the RE games, but I really enjoyed it a lot. It's by no means a bad movie. And it definitely has some edge of your seat moments, which is rare for me. Of course it also had it its fair share of flaws, like all movies do.

I think it's just that you guys feel it didn't live up to the quality of the games or follow the story of the games. The movie as a standalone movie certainly wasn't bad though. It was of at least a decent quality and holds its own to some of the movies playing in theaters these days easily.

  • I enjoyed the Resident Evil movie for what it was. It was moderately clever, very stylish, kinda retro zombie camp and tied together very well.

It wasn't a 1:1 replication of the game, but then it didn't try to be.

    I'd still give it 8 out 10.

  • Since the post is about the first RE movie, i'll have to say that it was pretty good. Now that second movie ~ well lets just say no one should ever talk about it, and the third movie thats about to come out... Please don't jack with the RE name any more than you already have.

  • The first Resident Evil movie was actually pretty good. Good enough to watch a few times, at least. It didn't stray too far from the feel of the games, and it could have easily worked as an isolated side story in the sprawling, Resident Evil mythos without screwing it up too much, if at all. I thought it was the perfect approach to a movie based on a video game.

However, the second movie was garbage. It screamed "I can tell the story of Resident Evil 3 better than the games did!!!" but failed miserably at that task. Why did they even bring Jill in when her only purpose was to be upstaged by Alice, who suddenly gained super powers? What the heck happened to Carlos and Nicholai? I think the worst part, however, was Alice having a fist fight with the Nemesis. That was just too much.

I saw the trailer for the third movie a few weeks ago, and it looks like it'll continue the ridiculous tradition established in the second film. But I'll still probably watch it, because I like Milla and I'm curious to see the film adaptation of my favorite Resident Evil character, Claire Redfield, even though I know the filmmakers aren't going to handle her with even a modicum of respect.

  • Resident Evil was good.

The first one was halfway decent. Creepy, well stylized. A little cheesey but hey listen to the dialog in the games. The sequel sucked ass. Horribly. The 3rd installment looks to be just as retarded. And it takes place in a desert or something? That had NOTHING to do with the games.

Why the horrible drop off from the first? Why can't they get video game movies right?
