2003: Nintendo release the Gameboy Advance SP in Japan (the SP is for special). It's an all-around improvement on the original GBA, including a brighter LCD, front light, rechargeable lithium ion battery and almost halved, folding form factor. The GBA was a good system, but I couldn't play anything until the later models finally added backlighting.
