1995: id Software releases Master Levels for Doom II for PC in the US. It's an expansion pack to the original (sequel) hit game. And nothing says "sorry you didn't get what you really wanted for Christmas" like 20 or so more levels of demon-splattering Doom. The only way the release could be more timely would have been an actual Christmas release.
