Supreme Commander 2 Confirmed

Back in February of this year Gas Powered Games unleashed Supreme Commander on the PC gaming public, delighting both RTS and giant robot fans everywhere with its focus on story and the awesome strategic zoom. Now publisher THQ has announced that a sequel will be strategically zooming to a PC near you this November.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is a standalone sequel to SupCom that will feature over 100 new units, a new single-player campaign, and an entirely new faction taking up arms in the Infinite War, as was hinted at by events in the first installment.

"Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is not only the continuation of the epic story that is unfolding inside the game's universe, it is the continuation of our goal to move the bar for RTS gaming even higher than ever," says Chris Taylor, CEO of Gas Powered Games

This really isn't much of a surprise to those who played through Supreme Commander, but it's nice to finally put a date with Princess Rhianne's shocked, "...no!"

  • Oh lordy...more mediocreness coming to a pc near you..

  • hey maybe it'll be the Arm/Core ending their war and joining their war!

  • @Darwyn: Didn't care for it either. What we need is another whopper in the vein of Company of Heroes (though, not in WW2. It worked well once, but let's not push it). THQ has been cranking out some rocking RTS's over the years but Supreme Commander was really the stinker of the bunch.

What we need is a sequel to Stalker. That game was so awesome. But, I guess Fallout 3 is coming out right? That's probably all we can hope for with Stalker's terrible sells.

  • AWESOME!
Sup Com isnt a 'stinker'far from it. Check its freaking average for reviews - mid 80s.

Spiritual sucessor to total ahnillation FTW!

  • @Darwyn: I'm not really sure where your getting 'mediocre' from, but personal taste I guess.

@StealthNachos: See, I didn't really care for CoH. I love DoW, and CoH brought a bunch of nice mechanics/changes to the field, but at the same time it felt very repetitive to me for some reason. Hard counters do that.

The biggest failing SupCom has is it's system requirements. It was essentially an upgrade-to-play game for everyone I know. The game was somewhat overwhelming for a lot of people, too, in the same way Total Annihilation was.

It's one of those love it or hate it games.

  • I didn't thought it was mediocre, not great or awesome, but it was good. Maybe they can improve it in a sequel.

    @StealthNachos:
Yeah Stalker is a great and underappreciated game that needs a sequel. So does CoH.

  • Nevermind the sequel, dammit, my PC can barely handle the first one!

  • I liked the game. I got it for free when I bought my Core 2 Duo from NewEgg. I was expecting shit, but was pleasantly surprised. I didn't realize it was the sequel to Total Annihilation.

  • @Scynix: Absolutely love DOW. I would love to see another one of those, mostly because you can't use or even fight the god damn Tyannid in any of the current versions. That, and I want another intro video (with Tyrannid).

I would love to see how synapse control is handled, and the digestion pool could be there to generate energy whenever something is killed by your Gaunts and Genes. The narrative for the Nids could all be in the second person, like, from the Imperials and Space Marines so that you can understand what's going on. Hell, I'd like to see a sequel to DoW before Stalker. Instead of that we have to wait through the development of SC 2 and I just don't care for that game.

  • Amazing! SC is the best RTS ive ever played hands down. Also the zoom out map is now a standard for me. Plus it had dual screen support so I cant wait to see how this one will improve.

  • Good. My Quadcore needs a good game to stress out on. >_<

  • @StealthNachos: Actually, we don't have to wait through SC2's cycle.

Sup Com is developed by Gas Powered Games.
Dawn of War/Company of Heroes is developed by Relic.

So, they can actually work on both. Dark Crusade gives the impression Relic/THQ is already making DoW2.

  • Only thing that I didn't like with Supreme Commander was that it didn't really do much to differentiate between the three factions (except the super weapons). I was expecting something like the differences between Arm and Core from Total Annihilation. In Supreme Commander, you couldn't really see the difference between each one.

Add to the fact that all of my friends who I play RTS games with couldn't handle the game made it even worse. I was the only one with a good rig at the time. Now all my friends are holding off on upgrading until Crysis comes out, so that means I won't have anyone else really to play the game with until then.

  • Sweet! More SC action. This is definitely getting bought.

  • A sequel eh? So people still play the first 1, with C&C3 out? Lets hope they can time the release good, before the competition hits, starcraft 2.

  • @Phlycheez: I could see how many people would make that mistake in thinking the factions were all similar to each other. Unit types were the same across all three factions in terms of their roles (light assault bots, heavy tanks, air superiority, etc.) Just by looking at the units is very deceiving. It isn't until one actually starts playing the game a bit that they realize the three factions are actually fairly different from each other. The game isn't like StarCraft where all the units appear wildly different.

The game was at first a real system breaker, that can't be denied; however, they recently released a patch a few weeks ago that gave substantial gains in performance. I used to not be able to play the game on low settings in Windows Vista because of crappy NVIDIA drivers. Now, I can play the game with medium settings on Vista! Really, if you shelved the game for performance problems before, now is a good time to try it again.

  • SC isn't that bad but the pace just killed it. You build up for 2 hours then wait another hour for your units to cross the map. Your reward for doing all of this? 2 minutes of subpar RTS combat.

On the other hand I dislike CoH. It requires a lot of strategy and is still much better than SC but I just don't like trying to guard 20 points on the map at the same time. By expanding normally in a 1 v 1 you pretty much have to have a line of defences that stretches across the map. Also the only build in your home area rule is garbage.

C&C3 has been the only RTS worth playing in the last year. Even then it still has a ton of balance issues to be fixed.

  • Supreme Commander is by far the best RTS I've ever laid hands on. I'm worried about how they will balance the new faction, but no question - I'll be pre-ordering this as soon as they release a date.

I'm guessing that the people who hate on Supreme Commander are the noobs who approach it as if it were Warcraft 3. "Oh nos! Too much thinking!" Heaven forbid an RTS contain some elements of actual strategy. Granted, Supreme Commander is more of a war simulator than a game... as it should be. :)

  • Supcom was a flawed game. It was nice to get back into the old TA fun, but there were many, many little issues that made the whole thing underwhelming on my side. Hopefully they'll be fixed, one by one in future patches.

That said, I will probably buy the sequel.

  • This standalone stuff is becoming more popular than I thought it would. First, Company of Heroes announces one and then Supreme Commander. I still like the good old expansion that's tied to the game, but I'm sure it's a business decision.

  • @jettokisora: That's exactly it, Jetto. "More of a war simulator than a game" Unfortunately, Chris Taylor left "fun" off the design documents.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Supreme Commander. My only complaint is how short it was. Each faction had what? Six missions? In six missions some new commander manages to end a war that had raged for a thousand years.

  • I was under the impression that this is more of an expansion pack than a sequel.

  • I thought it was great, the pace was great and there were always lot of options as to how to attack your opponent, First RTS I even wanted to play since WCIII. And I was glad to have picked it up. The online is brutal though. I have never been destroyed so quickly. I am excited to see what they do in the second game.

  • @Coherent: "Fun" is a relative term, bud. Most strategy games are too 'gamey' for me - you spend most of your time hacking and slashing rather than thinking. Supreme Commander has more to chew on, in my opinion. It gives you nearly unlimited options to work with, whereas most RTS games are severely limited in scope and replayability - more about tactics than strategy.

Supreme Commander is like chess in that sense - the challenge can take a lot out of you, but it doesn't make it any less fun. Just expect to be able to turn your brain off.

I found the Cybran "teaser" to be much more portentous of the coming cataclysm.

Also, this NOVEMBER? And we're only hearing about it now?

    Impressive.

  • I just hope they fix MP/netcode with SupComm 2..

  • supcom spoiled me. i find myself wanting to use the zoom in everything. windows, firefox, everything.
no other rts felt the same since.

  • SupCom Is just one of the best RTSs I've ever played, and I've played a lot of them. Almost any strategy is doable, and there's a counter for it too. As long as you can stay unpredictable and think ahead of your opponent, you'll win. It's like super-chess and the first RTS that lives up to the Strategy part of the name.@

    href="#c1756745">Coherent:

Hell, war simulator? Sounds just perfect. All the strategy with none of the real life killing. And winning is just that much more satisfactory when it's accompanied by a gigantic blast.

It really mimics full out war, creating the ultimate setting for a battle of wits.

  • oh man, Supreme Commander 2 and StarCraft 2

things are going to get mighty comfusing...

  • @Irenicus: you obviously know nothing about online rtses. You play supcom for the multiplayer. C &C 3 for the singleplayer. That game is just so unbalanced and broken.

/[Massive Irony] but EA will fix that...

  • Image of Atheist Jew Atheist Jew at 02:06 AM on 06/29/07 *

@Irenicus: Well, lets see...the article says SupCom 2 is out this Novemeber, and Starcraft 2 is out next year sometime. Gosh Golly Gee! Those two release dates certainly create conflict!

Also, tons of people play SupCom. With C&C3's multiplayer being the crap that it is, and SupCom's single player campaign being the crap that it is, the two are pretty well separated.

  • I don't get how everybody says the overview command map feature of Supreme Commander is revolutionary. Its the same feature thats been in the Homeworld series for years.

Anyway, this doesn't sound like Supreme Commander 2, this sounds like an expansion :P s'gotta be good if they plan on competing with the Company of Heroes expansion, Mideval 2 Kingdoms and the yet to be announced final expansion for Dawn of War.

  • I think Supreme Commander is a great game the only problem with the game is unit blance doesn't exist. When it takes 60+ flying units to even get some progress, which means after you move those units, you need to build additional 55 units it gets old fast. When the key to the game is to spam one type of unit, it means things are not balanced.

How to balance a game so your going to have 100+ unit mangement I couldn't exactly say. Long of the days when you had 20 dragoons ( I feel this is alot of one unit type ) and a combination of other units and at least make some progress against your enemy.

When defense structures are so unbalanced you must make 100's of units and basicly have 20 buildings of each unit production type, it shows something is wrong with balance of the units and buildings.

I just hope SC 2 is better otherwise I won't get it, of course hard to try it before you buy it, which is why a good demo is needed.
