PSP Vs DS: A Non-Existent Competition

The Playstation Portable isn t dead yet, according to The Street. Actually, I found The Street s article about how the PSP a little off target and disjointed.

First, they said that the PSP has been lost in the hype of the Xbox 360, which isn t really true. I mean, the two don t compete at all, and the PSP has been out long enough to lose momentum and press mentions naturally.

The story goes on to quote an analyst saying that the PSP isn t dead by any means, which, far from allaying fears, probably sparks a few since I ve not heard any rumblings of the portable having problems.

Sure, it has its issues, but the system is finally starting to see some decent games and the firmware upgrades have gotten rid of some of the major problems.

The article talks about the PSP s threat to Nintendo and Apple when I really don t think that either are its competition. I can t think of a single situation where I would want to take the DS and the PSP. The two systems are so very different and offer games so very different they almost compliment each other.

I think of the PSP as a device that lets you carry miniature entertainment around in your briefcase or over-sized pocket. You can watch small versions of movies, listen to MP3s and play small versions of PS2 games.

The DS isn t trying to extend your current selection of entertainment to your travels; it s trying to introduce new ways to game.

Put it this way, I almost never play PSP games at home when my PS2 is in sight, but I often play DS games at home, because it s the only system that supports that particular game.

Wow, that was a tangential ramble.
