Well, some form of it. There's a Microsoft Island now in Second Life that is devoted to Visual Studio ( Microsoft's flagship software development product for computer programmers.). The teaser video shows what most of the studio looks like, the rest will be revealed tomorrow, May 10, at 6pm Second Life time. It's unclear what Microsoft is planning to do while in Second Life, but it's got a whole lot of room to put Xbox Elites in (in a weird PS3 "Home" kind of way). Even computer programmers need a little down time.
Microsoft Flies a Blimp Into Second Life [3pointd]

Wondering why Halo 3 was delayed?
Why companies and governments are wasting their time and money on this "zomg virtual rape is oh so traumatic"-community is truly beyond me.
How about cranking out more VS service packs instead?
Okay, enough of this. This is the eighth story this month that's been tagged "Second Life"-- I was surprised to see that you can actually go a day without mentioning it-- two more and you will fill your quota for the month. That's it. No more until June, because blood will start shooting out my nose if I have to read anything more than ten stories a month about it.
Also, this Friday at Microsoft is casual Furriday.
Ok, guys I swear if I see another SL post in here i'm going to combust in flames...
... because I can no longer rage in there due to a permanent ban.
send in the flying penises in 5...4...3...
Stop feeding the beast. Yeah I know, bad press or good press, as long as it's being talked about...
I second Qwizatblah.
Love the Pinky and the Brain tag.
"Try to take over the world!"
Ok... so the whole flying penis virtual attack thing is pretty common in SL right? ... i can see the microsoft windows discs of razor sharp death beam protection algorithms now.
Couldn't they just put like 10 guys who normally work on usefull productive code and make some type of second life Taj mahal (sp?)?
Who is this Second Life user base that all these companies are trying to get to?
No one I know plays Second Life. None of the people I know people who play Second Life.
It seems to be just this big constant news generating machine in which no one with a sane mind would enter anyway. Is this game really that newsworthy?
I don't get it. I tried Second Life last Friday for about an hour and a half. I then promptly uninstalled it and canceled my free account. WTF is the point I kept telling myself. This is a complete waste of time I thought from start to finish.
I suppose its a good framework to eventually add on speech, touch sensor type crap for true cyberscrewing, or to use one of those "VR" helmets like that junk at the mall and BS like that. Unfortunately though, I saw "The Lawnmower Man" a long time ago and it sucked...
Could have been slightly cooler if it supported my SpaceNavigator which is essentially just a GoogleEarth Joystick at this point (although it rocks at that)
I hate "social" anything on the internet though. Computers and the internet are for Porn, period.
I log into second life but only for the poker or some other thing along those lines. I haven't seen anything extraordinary like a flying penis in the past year I've been logging in on and off (I'll uninstall it for a month or two, get on a few weeks, repeat). It might be because I don't go to the flying penis zone though.
What makes Second Life so popular, that's what I want to know and how can people enjoy playing that game?
Maybe Microsoft couldn't be arsed setting up an alternative to home and just decided to mooch off Second Life's servers instead.
That, or Major Nelson is secretly a furry.
Hmm... it's gonna be interesting to see how popular Microsoft is on SL. Most of the people I've met on the game are either bored housewives with horrific taste pretending to be sexy and whoring themselves out or nerds like me who actually make stuff. People in the former category are unlikely to get excited about Visual Studio, and as for those in the latter category, well... let's just say that one of the default items is a Tux t-shirt.
Then again, apparently the Lindens use Visual Studio 2003 to compile their code, and it IS a pretty damn good IDE. Any animosity toward Microsoft may be tempered by the quality of the product.
@17-A: Now you know how I felt when Florian wouldn't stop posting about WoW.
@johnny_ultimate:
Major nelson would be a badger, Yes I've thought about this.
Hahaha I can see the PN coming now, armed to the max with High Tech Griefer Technologies.
Seriously, don't be surprised to a video of this place becoming PWNED soon. They're just begging to be LOL'D at.
Im overwhelmed by so many of the negative responses I see on this website regarding Second Life, even more so due to the obvious ignorance underlying most of the comments. How is it people find themselves qualified to post negative comments of a misleading and inaccurate nature when they have never tried Second Life, know little or nothing about Second Life or have not bothered to learn how to integrate themselves into it's many societies?
As regards comments about its graphics engine, it produces better graphics results than most games I see on the market today (I should know, I create and sell products in Second Life) and most of the most beautiful-looking human (or otherwise) avatars I have ever seen were in Second Life...it seems most people outside SL have little or no concept of the skill and effort required to achieve these fantastic results and showing one's ignorance by making baseless comments, again, wins no friends or respect...
As far as the so-called 13 Most Beautiful Avatars mentioned in a previous post...they are mediocre at best and merely the opinion of two individuals wishing to create an exhibition with a difference. An avatar's beauty is also not merely the skin, hair and shape of their bodies but the clothing and other accoutrements they adorn themselves with...and their in-world behaviour governed by the person controlling them, something not possible to always capture with a screenshot...just like in real life.
Finally, Second Life is NOT a game as most people on this site seem to think it is...one does not "play" Second Life, it is literally a second life where creativity or perversion or greatness can be given a new lease not possible in the often banal reality we are all forced to subscribe to. Those of you who make comments about the residents of SL being pathetic or having no life would do well to remember my previous comments pertaining to their ignorance and their own positions..after all, is pretending to be an Elf in WoW or a Jedi in Star Wars online any better?
In SL, one can be these and more...SL is, like real life, what one makes of it.
