We just got to speak with Yoshiro Kimura, producer at Marvellous Entertainment and man at the helm of their super-group Wii title, Project O (reports of the game being named King's Story are apparently premature, Kimura saying "no, that's not its name, we're still working on a name"). Which was largely exciting, since I'm largely excited about this game, even more so since he also said we were the first Western journalists to check it out.
Earlier comparisons, a lot of them based on the production team's pedigree from the Harvest Moon, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy series, seemed to suggest the game was a a strategy title, a nice blend of Harvest Moon, Pikmin and Black & White. Those are...close, especially Black & White, but think more along the lines of The Settlers than the other two and you'll be getting warm.
Essentially you play the role of a small boy who is made King of the land. And you now have to govern said land by bossing your subjects around. Sounds simple (which is the point, the game's setting and art style being heavily influenced by European fairy tales), and plays simple, but again, that's the point: Kimura says the main objective of the game was to make a title that could be enjoyed by the whole family, which isn't exactly common for a strategy game.
Players take control of the King. Personally. You move the little guy around the screen and he serves as the personification of your orders, telling villagers to build things, follow him, attack monsters, etc. This not only gives the player direct involvement in the game (it's "similar to an RPG, where your character grows stronger and more effective"), but removes the need for menu screens, something the development team thought was necessary.
That's about where the concrete information dries up. The game is only 30% done, despite over a year of conceptual design and six months of development time, so a lot of things are still up in the air, including whether the King will age/grow and just how the control scheme will take advantage of the Wii Remote. Calm breaths waggle haters: Kimura promises that they "don't want people shaking the Wii Remote just for the sake of it".
Project O is a Wii exclusive, as Kimura believes the 360 is "too much of a hardcore system", while he "doesn't really like the PS3", as it's too difficult and expensive to develop for. That and the Wii is played by all ages in Japan, bringing it into line with their vision for a strategy game for the family. It's due in Japan around Spring 2008, with a Western release promised soon after.

an this is one game Im really looking foward to on the Wii.
I love the crew at Marvelous Entertainment also, they make some pretty interesting stuff.
How can this game possibly suck with an all talent team?
Then again Oceans 12 was pretty terrible...(of course that was a movie, not a game)
=P
*sighs as she adds this game to her "wanted" list and wonders where she will get the money.*
And epic clash of egos, maybe.
If this game is any good I'll totally get it, I just hope it has good online play.
mm, I'm looking forward to bossing people around as a bratty little despot.
I don't understand....
It posted my comment before I was done....
What I meant to say was:
I don't understand...
WHY DO I LOVE IT SO MUCH!?
360 too hard core? Man, I'd buy this.
I was actually hoping it was gonna come to the 360.
Bummer, I might finally need a wii.
The graphics of this Game reminds me of Littlebigplanet
Has almost a Animal Crossing artstyle vibe to it.
Will the king have a set name? If so, that would be pretty cool game-name concept thing. I guess.
@dnzperson: It makes sense for Japan the ones who own the 360 is the more "hardcore" market.
On the Wii it will bet the most exposure and yet allow them to use nicer graphics than releasing it on the DS itself. Perhaps if the game does well on the Wii they might consider a DS version perhaps.
Im totally understanding about his comment with dev costs for the PS3 being too high also. Hes not being a dick or a sony hater just somebody who doesnt have a huge budget to try an experimental title with on a harder to develop for system.
I think the wii controls will be great for this sort of game also, and will be a welcomed addition to the game library.
I'll have to keep an eye on this one.
i like. i need to get a wii.
definitely has potential compared to a lot of the selection at the moment.
here's a video

I just hope it doesn't end up being too short. Black & White 2 was kind of dissapointed. It was like a big tutorial, and then when you want to start playing seriously the game ends.
Why am I having flashbacks of Actraiser when I read the description of this game?
@EmeraldDragon:
I'm on that same boat. My "Wanted" list has become my "Well, maybe in a few years" list. *Sighs...
I would have loved this game 5 years ago. Unfortunately I've grown distant from the "your character is a 15 year old who: whatever." Maybe the whole king barking commands thing would draw me in, but in reality I'm just not able to connect to the adolescent RPG premise any more. I'm too damned old. Cry for me whilst you bash.
After watching the video, I really hope they can get that crayon style to go along with the main game. The still images along with the animated talking bits look gorgeous, while the actual game looks like a lot like MySims with a forest feel. I'd still get it, but having it be based on graphics and not just gameplay would be nice.
Dark City meets Pikmin and it how cow knights, how could I not want this game?
The thing with the cows kinda reminds me of the old school PC game, THE HORDE
Now that was some funny shit.
@Witzbold: Ah yes. Those things exploded like tomatoes, and those cutscenes were pretty cool on the CD ROM version (a luxury at the time, as they also did a still-frame version for floppy disk if I remember rightly). Those poor cows. I always spent so much time building traps around them. Damned Horde.
I must buy this game.
@myxylplyx: How old can you be that you can't play a game based on the age of the characters? 500 years old?
...are you Pounce de Leon and you really did fine the fountain of youth? Wait, don't tell me know. If you are Ponce de Leon, just give me a high five.
@DarkOwl: Oh man its good to see another person from the same era as me.
Yeah I loved that game it was brilliant stuff back then.
Kinda want to see a remake of it just becuase it was so damned amusing and the humor was excellent.
Although the way the little minions act in overlord really reminds me of the style The Horde had.
WOW it's starting to happen already. I though we had at least till the holidays before every thing went all PS2 like developer wise. Cheers to the new devs pop up even if they are vets. New management can do wonders for your creative pool!
Majesty * Pikmin = WINNER

This is one of their wallpapers.. sweet.
Is it me or did anybody think the picture reminded them of Don Quixote? Maybe its just me...
