Anyone remember those rumors of a 2D Metroid title for DS called Metroid Dread? Formerly all but extinguished, the fanboys became rabid again after this message was found in Metroid Prime: Corruption:
Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion.So this means Metroid Dread is coming, right? Wrong.
When CVG asked Nintendo about their apparent easter egg, they responded killjoy-style:
Nintendo is not making the 2D Metroid at this point in time.Note, Nintendo didn't brush off the rumor with a "no announcements at this time" sidestep. They said, "it ain't happening."
I just wish my heart would listen.

Meh, that could just mean they're gonna do it later...maybe...
Of course Nintendo isn't making it - they farmed it out to a third-party developer.
Right? RIGHT?
*sigh*
Snake? Snake!? SNAAAAAKE!!!!
-------------
Thats how I feel about that.
[pedant]
"Nintendo is not making the 2D Metroid at this point in time."
So it's being done by a 2nd party developer?
"Nintendo is not making the 2D Metroid at this point in time."
It's already finished?
[/pedant]
Not doing a 2-D metroid, never said they weren't doing a Metroid.
Well, if you look at the way they worded that, they only said they're not making a 2D Metroid. That doesn't negate the possibility of a 3D Metroid title.
@AGiES: My thoughts exactly. They aren't making it because it's already done. you gotta love word-play sometimes.
Even though I don't own a DS and have no interest in getting one..... a new 2D Metroid game just might spark my interest enough... MIGHT.
Nintendo just loooooves to keep everything a secret. Watch it be announced soon, just watch.
Ow...my heart ;-;
Maybe its a 3D side-scroller. like Megaman on the PSP.
They do use the wording "the SD Metroid" which seems to imply that there is a 2D Metroid, and like others have pointed out, they're just not making it themselves.
Not sure why I even care though, I won't be getting it, don't have a DS.
It wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo plans to let the Metroid series rest for a while after four portable games and the Prime trilogy. That's /seven/ games after a 10 year wait. They definitely made up for their neglect in full.
It would be suitable if from now on we were to see Metroid games as frequently as we do Zelda games. They aren't one to saturate the market with endless sequels within one series. They play the timing game well.
Microsoft said they weren't going to drop the price of the 360...
that could also mean that dread has been switched to a 3d project
What about another 3D DS Metroid?
"Nintendo is not making the 2D Metroid at this point in time".
So... the programmers are on lunch, right Nintendo? You'll start making it again at 1:00?
Of course they aren't making a new 2D Metroid now. Their staff is already too busy localizing Mother 3 for the U.S.-issued DS Mother triple-pack. Right?
...please?
@spcmnspf:
After Hunters and its Carpal Tunnel-inducing controls? I hope not. I really, really hope not. That game made my arm hurt in ways you can't imagine.
@destro713:
Oh, how we all wish...c'mon, Itoi, stop being a jerk and let them localize the game. =/
Awe I wanted another metroid fusion :(
Bah. So he said not a 2D metroid, and you all jump to the logical 3D assumption. Come on people, think! Its a 4D metroid. Double the awesome.
Nintendo listen up! If you want to make a bunch more money, even though you are rolling in it now. Give us an original 2d Metroid on Wiiware, I'll buy that shit in 2 seconds flat and so would just about everyone else.
You only need a team of like 5-10 people (very talented obviosuly). Please big n get it done, because mp3 is just so amazing..god I love metroid.
Metroid is truly dread mon, truly dread.
@CrimzinD: Let's not rule out the possibility of a 1D Metroid just yet.
If Dread ends up being a 3D game like Hunters I'll be very sad. Aside from being tired of the Prime gameplay, Hunters just wasn't very good. It was technically impressive but it was difficult to see anything.
They need to do a worthy successor to Metroid 3, as Fusion was just OK.
No way! Hunters was good, and Prime 3 plays just like it only bigger.
The only real problem with MPH are those damn "action-replayer-hacker-kiddies" who ruined the Wi-Fi play for everyone.
Well, unless they're just not that effective in English, I would read this as a confirmation of a 2D Metroid in the works.
"We are not working on THE 2D Metroid"
"a 2D Metroid" would suggest that there isn't one.
"the 2D Metroid" must, through english usage, refer to an existent 2D Metroid, either one being planned or one actually being made. There is a 2D Metroid and at this point in time they are "not making" it. So it may be something that they aren't making yet, but that does exist in conception.
Unless it's just incorrect grammar, in which case:
Oh.
Hunters sucked BIGtime. Horrid controls, nothing more than a cheap knockoff of the 3D Metroid games.
For the love of someones god, please put out another 2D metroid. I've love to see a 2D game on the PS3, Xbox 360, or the Wii. Wouldn't a beautiful 2D game be nice?! Like a new Castlevania or a Metroid title?
Sadly, methinks that 2D is dead. I can only hope not tho.
"Nintendo is not making the 2D Metroid at this point in time."
That just means it's already been made and is just waiting for release.
All ye, Rejoice!
@destro713: One could only hope. Even though deep down inside, I doubt it would ever happen.
beep.....beep.....beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.....
:(
uhm...gee am I the only one that understands that just because "Nintendo" isn't making a 2D Metroid doesn't mean one isn't being made. Who did Prime 3? Retro?...who Prime Hunters? NST....of course those are second party developers but still....I'm just saying.
@skullivan: Let's keep it real. If Nintendo does another 2D fetch quest Metroid then it's going to suck hard. That's the problem with Zelda TP...it's the same shit we've been doing for the last 20 years. Prime 3 is a bit of a departure for reasons we all know. Prime Hunters singleplayer quest was trash but the multiplayer rocks...until you run into the douche cheaters. Metroid needs to evolve just like Zelda needed to evolve but didn't. In a vast universe the best Nintendo could come up with over 20 years are more Metroids? Give me a break...come up with some new material if ANY new Metroid titles are in the pipleline.
Well, it was fun to have hope at least, right?
I'm lying. My guess? In the vein of how Nintendo does their games, Metroid Dread will be one of three things:
a) a rhythm game,
b) a puzzle game, or
c) a rugby simulator.
Metroid Prime: Pinball - need I say more? Just gotta think outside the box sometimes. Think like Nintendo thinks.
They're not making a 2D Metroid now because Nintendo is busy with the 4D Metroid Dread. Time FTW, bitches !! Since Mario is going in space, Samus should get a side-scrolling platformer more akin to New Super Mario Bros.
Speaking of Metroid...I would love a remake of Super Metroid, or even the original Metroid using the Prime engine on Wii.
I know Retro said they were taking a break but break time is over boys, get to it.
@EGO531
I was thinking the same thing when I read the quote. It seems almost intentional that they say "THE 2-d Metroid" instead of "A 2-d Metroid".
I was ready to abandon hope before reading reader comments...now I'm filled with empty promise again :(
Son. Of. A. B****.
I gotta say, Hunters had phenomenal controls (if you weren't crippled) but, seriously, anything 2D is probably coming to Wii Ware.
It's the most economically viable approach. People went bananas over Super Metroid on the VC, so if you gave them new content, I'm sure it'd sell really well.
@Striderhayasa:
One quick note...Retro's not making Metroid games anymore, for a while at least. They said Prime 3 was their last, if I remember correctly.
I just got done playing through Metroid Prime 3 and saw the message, but right next to it there was another message that said that the Experiment was a failure. I can't remember the exact words but it's right next to it.
Sounds like they included the disclaimer to their own easter egg =P
thx nintendo to kill my dreams of having to play a new real metroid and not your crappy fps prime series bleh its sad day
Well, at least by the time they get a new Metroid game out, it'll have been long enough that the fans will be angry, but satisfied that another Metroid game has come out. I'd really like to see a Post fusion game at this point, but to be completely honest. I'm really patient, I could wait another 5 years before they released another game. I'm still busy replaying the current and old Metroid games over and over and not getting bored with them.
If there's one thing I've learned about Kotaku is the tendency to not parse out things completely to their insane, stretched to the limits definition... I'd agree this is by no means a denial of any kind. It may already be done since the message was it's "nearing completion" and the game's had to go gold since then.
Either way, it's not a denial in any sense of the word. I'd expect it to be announced later in the day. ;)
I don't know if I could believe this.
I just died a little inside.
Your goddamn Metroid Prime 3 better be damn good to give me this kind of blueballs, Retro! AAAAARRRRRGGGHHH!!!
@Archaotic: "sigh"....did I say they were making Metroid Dread....uh...no. the point was EAD (Nintendo internal studios) didn't make Prime 3...a second party did...that being Retro. Reading comprehension people...
JAPAN TIME
eh...no skin off my nose. i'm just waiting to pick up mp3.
i dont understand. is there a law says they couldnt deny it if they were making one? if i was making some stuff and i wasnt ready to tell anyone id say 'i am not making that stuff. please stop asking'. until i was ready, then id say 'hey look, we were making it really'. never mind parsing.
not that im saying they are working on it, just that what they say about it doesnt mean much. personally i believe the line in mp3 was old code that nobody bothered to take out after dread was... cancelled, whatever. retro probably didnt even think itd be a big deal.
@Striderhayasa:
Ah, sorry, I did misread there. My apologies, man.
I read this more as the devs at Retro screwing with the fanboys.
They're a bunch of pedants!
Either:
a) it is finished already
b) someone else is making it
c) it is not totally 2d
@Archaotic: NP
@bluestreak108: Probably. It's to the point where I'm really beginning not to care.
Fanboys can be so delusional. The statement is crystal clear: "Nintendo is not making the 2D Metroid at this point in time." This does not mean that the 2D Metroid is finished, or being done by a different dev. It means that a 2D Metroid will not happen because Nintendo is too busy porting Metal Gear Solid 4 to the Xbox 360.
metroid online batle game?
@Striderhayasa: Of course it's the same shit, and we all love it ;)
Maybe it's 2.5D? :D
