This is one of those game concepts that gives me pleasant little chills down my spine just imagining it. 10tacle Studios today announces the development of TOTEMS for the PC and Xbox 360. Totems is described as a super-heroic platform game that inspired by the urban sport Le Parkour, which is like free running only instead of focusing on freedom of movement it instead strives for efficiency of movement. Kind of hard to explain, so check out this YouTube vid of the sport in action. Now imagine that in a game featuring an original super hero mythology and you can kinda see where my tingles are coming from. 10tacle uses a system called the Semantic Environment Sensing System to give your character, NPCs, enemies and even the camera an acute awareness of their surrounds, enabling never before seen non-scripted movement. This just sounds exquisite, and it doesn't look too shabby either. I'll wait to see TOTEMS in action before I start obsessing, but consider my interest highly piqued.

Er... so it's kind of an Assassin's Creed versus mode in a Greek setting?
an interesting idea, i never thought id see a parkour video game. how they are working out the controls is the biggest question in my mind.
Yeah, Assassin's Creed is attempting this type of movement. It's nice to see a game entirely based around the 'sport', however. It's very impressive to see people moving around like our ancestors ^_^
I don't know... I'm still kind of wary about clicking a link posted by Fahey...
"innovative Semantic Environment Sensing System (SESS)"
This is developer speak for, "We flagged the level art and objects so the AI knows what they are and what animations to play." This is how all platforming games do it. They've probably just got more flags and more animations since the new processors can handle it.
@timebombtimmy: This looks kind of iffy, but [www.freerunning.com] is a parkour game that Rebellion (apparently?) released in March. I've never actually seen it on shelves, mind you.
@Gamemaster: Wow, I've got sub-par hyperlinking skills...
Fine, you may have saved yourself this time, but you never know when I might strike again!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA
The game looks sorta interesting. That video really amazed me when the one guy got 3 steps on a wall before doing a back flip (when people were doing backflips in tandem.) Oh and next time they better stay off my Tardis. (1:39)
Color me intersted, parkour is fun.
Assassin's Creed really only has the player doing free running, so if Totem has everything in there capable of it, then it's a step up.
This is made by the Outcast guys, so it has to be good.
Finally official. I have been following this game for two years now. Actually, I've been following the team. Part of Totems' team is the genius behind Outcast. A memorable action adventure game released in 1999.

Finally, it's not exactly a Greek theme :p
Check out this video to promote the game to publishers, it'll explain a lot: [www.planet-adelpha.net]
@Zawath:
Exactly what I wanted to say. For people not familiar with PC gaming, Outcast (which is NOT the same as Jedi Outcast) is often regarded as one of the best PC action adventures of all time. Totems has already been announced some two years ago, but then it kind of disappeared. I'm glad to see it back.
You can find a concept art gallery here: [www.planet-adelpha.net] (some pieces posses a very ICO-like quality, although I doubt the games will have too much in common), a promotional video here: [www.n-joy.cz], and a viral advertising website here: [www.herawakening.org]
Yes, I'm very excited about this game. :)
@Eregian:
Beat me to it. :)
Hehe, nice, I beat somebody for a change :p
Looks interesting. I was thinking how a lot of skateboarders used to say that San Francisco was the best place to skateboard, because of the interesting architecture and the hills and all, but then it all changed when all the private and public structures were all given those little metal staples bolted into all the structures, either put up by the city (such as at the waterfront near the piers), and also when the city started making lots of ordinances against skateboarding. It would be interesting if freerunning and parkour became popular in its stead, given that little tiny bumps aren't going to stop a running person from pulling crazy stuff off.
What happened to Elveon? Has it been cancelled?
i hope there's at least some level of difficulty involved in it. i'm afraid it will turn out like another tony hawk piece of feces that just looks cool.
Elveon is developed by another 10tacle team called 10tacle slovakia, located in the East-European country of the same name.
Here is a list of all the games 10tacle is publishing: [www.10tacle.de]
This game could be amazingly awesome, or terrible.... I mean shadowrun kind of terrible.
This is what we like to call "hype".. if the system works, we'll see it in action. If it falls flat on its face, we won't be surprised.
@kagebutsu:
Shadowrun is great, just not $60 great.
@insane_cobra: For people not familiar with PC gaming, Outcast (which is NOT the same as Jedi Outcast) is often regarded as one of the best PC action adventures of all time.
By whom? Gamerankings shows Outcast with an average 81.6% rating over 40 reviews. That's hardly qualifying as "best evar" by any measure. I'd say most games clocking in at the 80th percentile are at least worth the money you put down for them, but beyond that...
But for the record, Jedi Outcast had a marginally higher review average, heh.
@Hagglegaggle
Did you actually play the game, or did you conclude this fact by looking at gamerankings? Most reviewers at the time were put off by it's graphics (one of the last voxel based games), but the AI and immersion of Outcast was groundbreaking at that time. Non-linearity is a way to play this game, not an option! Pretty revolutionary if you ask me.
Try it if you find it, and can make it work on your XP or Vista machine, hehe...
@Hagglegaggle:
By many. It wouldn't hurt to actually read some of those reviews, you know. Or, as Eregian suggested, play the game. You might also want to read this great making of article: [www.rockpapershotgun.com]
Oh MAN I need to go play Outcast again. Then this.
this game sounds very intruiging..
but at this point its all just words.
i'd need to actually see what happens in the game to know if im going to have to but it or not.
well actually since i probably wont get a 360, i'll probably never play it anyways..
(bring it to PS3 damnit!)
