We woke up this morning thinking it would be another normal day, not realizing that according to Microsoft PR, it's Halo 3 Day. Woo hoo! Their latest announcements have some interesting tidbits on the Halo 3 megalaunch. So we're going to play a game. The press release lists the "facts," and we translate them into more digestible content.
- An unprecedented number - more than 10,000 retailers in the United States alone - will be opening their doors at midnight on September 25
(50-90% are 24-hour Wal-marts who offer poor healthcare benefits while promoting an outsourced workforce)
- Major regional events will be held in select locations including New York City, Seattle, Los Angeles and Miami...score free merchandise and get a chance to play "Halo 3" with local celebrities in on-site
(the celebrities will not sleep with you)
- Pontiac is teaming up with Microsoft to provide 1,000 lucky winners a copy of "Halo 3" before it's available in stores with their "First to Own" promotion.
(1,000 winners may be subject to applicable taxes and fabled "super wedgies")
(Other highlights include Microsoft not knowing what to do after Halo 3 hits stores)
OK, even though I find it necessary to cut a little bit through the Halo 3 hype, I'm glad that Microsoft is making the launch as exciting as possible for fans. You know what they say: Crack open the Mountain Dews...

What is this "Halo 3" thing people speak of?
So Nat'l Video Game Day is Halo 3 day!!
Wow. All these Halo posts make my head hurt.
Close your bold tags!
i dOn'TT kNNo eTheer- bb B but whaT thE heel aRE the y pu pupp putTiNG in ThIS nEWW oRAnge Mmm MmouTain DeW?/???
:$
this is getting a tad bit annoying...then again it IS halo 3...
@theelk801: Not sure...lets see...Halo 3...3 Halos? OOO...3 rings...3...woah, its the Red Ring of death, but rebranded and relaunched! The RRD game! Nice move MS, if your Xbox360 isn't bricked, this'll do the job for you :) Didn't know it was so popular...
Mountain Dew is now caffeine free! That shit used to me better than amphetamines!
@theelk801:
I think it's some kind of salad dressing or health food craze. Maybe a good-for-you fatty acid like Omega-3?
Mark you really got a hardon for halo eh? ;D
can not wait for h 3 !
Ok, Mark, this is getting a little excessive. The first four posts on the site are Halo 3. At least throw a cake or something in between those.
Is that Titanic? Hmmm that could be prophetic.
@jasu: Yeah seriously remind everyone about Ikaruga or something. >__>;;
Halo 3 posts are the new iPhone posts for giz.
Wow,thats a lot of halo on kotaku today.
Masterhype.
And yes, that is the Titanic.
@killershatner:
lol if you dont like it leave! or you can do like i do with most wii stories ignore them! go make your own site if you want to choose what should and shouldnt be on a site.
I bought 4 liters of Mountain Dew yesterday at Target. Couldn't find my Code Red, thanks to that MC Juice "Game Fuel". :(
@jasu: Shh..you're just going to end up getting us a picture of a Halo 3 cake.
@theelk801: A new planet Microsoft discovered in collabo with the army I think.
I think the best thing Halo ever did for the world is this painfully delicous mountain dew. I hope they keep it up after the game launch.
@chip5541:
Yeah it is the Titanic, being launched.
What's Halo 3?
I'm glad Microsoft is out there promoting Halo 3. It's easy for us gamers to get caught up in games like Beautiful Katamari, Eternal Sonata, Rez and Ikaruga hype and completely forget about the little known games like Halo 3. It's good to see a company giving its less popular titles a little more limelight and helping push them into the gamer's consciousness. It's also good that Microsoft is bringing a genuine new experience to the Xbox 360 platform in the shape of a futuristic FPS, a genre that has been sorely lacking on the 360 in recent years.
Isn't it great to be a gamer?
"Local celebrities"?
the hype train is getting out of control. I am sure halo 3 will be a good game, but its not the second coming its just the last chapter in what was once a good FPS franchise.
lets not pull any punches, the single player story of halo 2 sucked.
"I'm glad that Microsoft is making the launch as exciting as possible for fans". Really, you are glad? After reading the commentary you included in your last 3 posts, I don't get the sense that you feel that way. Oh and choosing a picture of a boat that would eventually sink doesn't help legitimize that quote either. Hard to believe you are "glad" MS is doing this for the fans. If anything you seem bothered by it all.
@slomo788: Game Fuel stomps the ever-lovin' hell out of Code Red. Hell, the Save-A-Lot brand Mountain Holler stomps Code Red. Too much cherry for my palette.
@baberg: LOL
I'm guessing from these last few news post that you sort-of dislike the Halo Franchise Mark. Sure its not as deep as say Bioshock (which is GOTY as of now with only Mass Effect as a strong contender), but it is a good quality game with a decent story, at least one better than say Gears of War. Do you hate the game or do you hate the marketing Mark? Sure MS maybe going ahem "overboard" with the PR and such, but Halo is their Cash Cow and the reason why they are such a force in the console business. It was the game that put them in the position to be able to get exclusives like Gears, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden, Eternal Sonata, and many others that would either not exist or be on other consoles like PS3 or Wii (I own a Wii btw anbd plan on getting a PS3 when MGS 4 comes out).
frick kotaku, how many halo 3 stories do we need.
ENOUGH ALREADY!
pretty much everyone here that has a 360 is going to buy it. there's no need to promote for M$ this much...unless they are paying you to do so.
:-)
@Witzbold: Well, a 'halo' really just is a massive 'cock ring' if you ask me. So Galact- I mean Mark, must really be working it with halo here
@Gadgetron: Ending was disappointing, yes, but I liked it overall.
People keep complaining about the playing the Aribiter, i don't understand why, he was more fleshed out in character than MC, imo.
@edb87: I beg to differ. I'm a Halo fan, but Game Fuel is nowhere near COde Red, at least to me. Who doesn't love cherry?
Whoa, I'm not averse to a few barbs against Halo 3 or anything, but I don't want to come to Kotaku and see demagoguery like
"(50-90% are 24-hour Wal-marts who offer poor healthcare benefits while promoting an outsourced workforce)"
=(
Hmm, that's odd. I was specifically promised celebrity sex.
Halo 2's ending was good. If there had been a definitive ending to 2 they hype for the upcoming game wouldn't be the same. As in, it woudln't have been as good.
An abrupt ending doesn't change the fact that you had fun with Halo 2, whether you admit it or not. Denial only proves you are LYING.
@slomo788: Well GF has cherry in it, but it isn't a "kick to the testicles" amount of cherry like Code Red. It's also got that citrus taste to it that complements the cherry.
Although Code Red is good, I do suggest trying out Mountain Holler. A 12 pack will only cost you $2, and its the best Mountain Dew knock-off I've had.
@theelk801:
Totally off-topic: is your icon the album art for the latest Murder by Death release? If so, you rule. If not, lets pretend none of this ever happened.
does anyone know where the official New York launch will take place? the one with celebrities and such?
@zaky: If you go to the Times Square EB, you can throw down with the Naked Cowboy! AWESOME!
Of course, all we've got to throw down with up here is Mikey Teutul from American Chopper, and (please trust me on this) that guy's too wasted to be anything but a pushover.
all this halo hype is going to make me more sick of it than i am about hearing what apple will do next.
no matter what site i'm reading from, there is always something stealing all the posts.
I tell you that Pontiac is teaming up with Microsoft bullshit is pissing me off. I have it figured out to a T. The rules state 4 games with 250 copies of Halo 3 to the first 250 who get it right. Each game starts of 12:00 am ET on 9/5, 9/9, 9/12, and 9/15. Before 12:00 hits I open up de scrambler web sites, state web sites, Pontiac Web sites and each of the first three games I have solved the stupid scramble and Pontiac trivia in seconds to only find out I'm not a winner. I have one more try and I will win that mother f'er.
Whelp, time to shut down the internet so that some a-hole doesn't spoil the ending. Harry Potter dies.
@chip5541:
Halo 3 is unsinkable!
@zany_ninja: JESUS CHRIST. Are you really such a pathetic and resentful gamer to pull a RRoD joke by comparing the name of the game?
GOD. Grow some pubes and get out of childhood already. It was fun for the first months, but now it's just an old line that people without a sufficiently logical argument pull to make themsleves a bit more "bold".
Please, stop.
@Gadgetron: For you. I enjoyed the SP. But sometimes it seems that I am the last reasonable and sanem man left on earth... or on kotaku.
MS faps all over their one franchise anyone cares about. Yawn.
They really should call this game "Halo 2, what we probably should have given you years ago"
pff.. until Microsoft gives away plasma tv's to everyone at an event..
these so-called "extravaganza"'s are nothing.
and am no sony-fanboy
@HOVA: Well, MS does not produce their own HDTV's...
@Scuba Steve:
Prepare to get roasted in the ass.
Do you think maybe American Greetings and Microsoft are in Cahoots? Because seriously, either Microsoft had this planned and then American Greetings decided to make a holiday out of it, or someone at Microsoft knows someone at American Greetings, found out about "National Video game Day" and then told the higher-ups to swing it in the direction of Halo-promoting.
The whole thing stinks. I was entertained when I found out American Greetings declared today "National Video game Day". But now its Halo day? WTF?
Not to sound like a Fanboy, but I think National Video game day should be recognized as perhaps the day that the NES was released? Because until the NES, not many people knew what a video game was?
But hey, Microsoft brought us Windows. Why not let them also be glorified in the scope of video games as well?
Halo day my ass. If this were Halo day, it would've launched at 12AM this morning.
Oh and @baberg: nice post.
