It's not often that we see an ultra-rare copy of Super Mario Bros. IV for the NES, let alone one going for the low, low price of only $149.99. The game's rarity is most commonly chalked up to the fact that it doesn't really exist. Yet, today, we are lucky enough to bask in the presence of its eBay auction.
What's being sold is unfortunately nothing more than a hacked ROM with a Super Mario Land meets Famicom label slapped on. The screenshots look like nothing more than a modified Super Mario Bros. 3 featuring some amatuer level and sprite editing and I'm fairly certain one could find this pirated ROM in the dark corners of the internet and save themselves some cash.
But if 150 bucks is just a drop in the bucket in your world for a "rare" NES curiosity such as this, go nuts. Me, I'll hunt it down and look for my old NESticle executable.
SUPER MARIO BROTHERS 4 IV Rare game [eBay, thanks Hero!]
Update: Hey! It's a hacked version of Armadillo! Thanks, MegaSeven.

coming soon to VC for 800 wii points.
I reported the auction to ebay, hopefully it will be down soon.
If someone actually buys that then I should consider gluing some random circuit boards together, putting a dolphin logo on it, and calling it "Ultra rare Super Gamecube dev-kit!!"
I don't know. It's fishy sure. Positive it's just a hacked rom put on a cartridge, but he doesn't lie anywhere on the page. He doesn't claim it's anything other than what it is. A very rare cartridge of "Super Mario IV". He doesn't claim it's made by Nintendo or anything.
As opposed to what you're saying NPC, which would be lying. I know you're just joking, but it's just not the same.
Not many of these around....unless you live in Taiwan, where they're actually used as napkins.

There ya go. That's what it is. Quick '"Super Mario IV" rom' search on google took me to that.
Cuz, you know... Super Mario IV is supposed to look worse than Super Mario III, II, and I!
My friends and I were having a conversation just last night about selling fake crap on eBay for a hefty profit. We have the means and the know-how, so it looks like "rare" Atari 2600 cartridges will be in our future... It's a lot better than the idea I had for putting Vincent Price's face on a grilled cheese sandwich.
And you know some dope is actually going to buy that, thinking it's real.
Shameful.
@PhantomVI:
Your theories intrigue me...
Where might I acquire one of these sandwiches?
Someone call Nintendo, preferably their legal department. People trying to take advantage of ignorance make me sick.

He's using a trademark charachter In an unlicensed game and selling it for profit and wording it in a way to make it seem like this goes with the rest of the series. I'm not a laywer but I'd imagine this is illegal in MANY ways.

Or at least report this auction to ebay.
I just emailed their Auction Piracy Email, I'll let you know if I get a response.
Is it me or is Guaranteed missing a couple letters on the back? I also like the fact they didn't replace the Armadillo/Twinkieman picture next to the number of lives left.
I call it ignorant tax, sure the person or persons behind this
should be held legally responsible but how many people do you know that actually pay 150 $ for retro
games and gear....Thats right Collecters. And any collecter worth his (thats right his) nes dogbone controller wouldnt be caught dead considering this "limited offer"
@YCS:
Ugh, you're missing the point. I was replying to NPC's comment about how he should glue circuits together and call it Gamecube dev kits.
I never once said what the SMIV guy was doing wasn't illegal. Just that he's advertising it as exactly what it is.
Nesticle? Just play your NES games online with vNES!

Vide of it up on youtube.
This is a prime example of eBay Rule # Something or Other:
"If the seller puts 'RARE' in the title of the auction, odds are it isn't."
The really rare stuff on eBay is the stuff that just gets put up there with nothing "Rare" or "Hard to find" in the title. Because the hard to find stuff usually comes from somebody who doesn't know what they've got and thus aren't aware that it's rare or hard to find.
@noelix: You know it's a quality pirated game when the hacker doesn't edit all of the sprites.
I love the bit where he gets a powerup - which should be a star normally, and it turns mario into a flashing kangaroo with punching gloves on.
I think Saddam Mario has WMD in the mushrooms. Nice screen.
Well that cart is still worth a little something-something.
Even if it is bootleg, its still a rare bootleg circa 1991.
A real collector would get Super Mario IV just because.
GO GO CHINA!
@cybereality: It was a dumped rom... What the heck? How could you say that? Honestly... They can make 100 more of these "rare" items... How about I sell you my Earthbound Zero rom.
Disclaimer: that was blatant sarcasm.
@bobtheduck:
How much? Can you also sell me a picture of a magazine featuring Super Mario RPG?
There's a game out there called "Somario". It's Genesis Sonic 1 with Mario characters on the NES.
It's a rather good port of the game too, impressive technically as it's a genesis game on the NES. With Mario.
There are other options too you know. Maybe he doesn't know its fake, or maybe he bought it not knowing its fake and is now trying to get rid of it (while not lying about its fakeness).
@PhantomVI:
Since you're abandoning the idea, you won't mind if I start selling those Vincent Price grilled cheese sandwiches, will you?
@Lightbunny:
You'll be the first to know when the auctions go live.
Trivia: In Japan, Super Mario World is also known as Super Mario Bros. 4.
Anybody notice that the amount of lives left is indicated by a little head with a pimp hat (feather included) What's crazier than that is...SOMEBODY'S BIDDING ON THIS!
Then again, the dumbass dumb enough to buy it should burn in hell for their stupidity, and what's hotter than the fires of shame brought on by the regret of a purchase so shameful as this? Whoever's selling it sucks, and whoever buys it sucks more. Hooray!
@Megaseven:
I do that sometimes. Apologies.

@Ghede:
Hey, this is no worse than the Pokemon ROMs they sell here in India. Go to a game store, and I guarantee you that you find a poorly Photoshopped picture of Ho-oh on a shiny box and someone will try to pass it off as "Pokemon Shiny Gold Version".
There are only about 150,000,000 different Mario Mods floating around out there.
What's shameful about it is that even though whoever gets swindled basically deserves it for being a moron, the guy who makes money off that sap is a crook.
