Here's a great Super Mario Kart commercial from 1992. The presentation is hilarious with it's quick cuts and Monster Truck Show style voiceover. "It's got two speeds! Fast and Way Too fast!"
This is a fine example of an ad that would make you run in to your parent's bedroom at 7am all cracked out on sugared cereal and beg them to buy that game for you. I tried that method just last weekend and you know what? It totally still works.

Um thats Zelda not Mario Kart.
I believe that you posted the wrong video. It's still a cool video, but I thought I'd give you a little heads up.
It would have been fun to have Zelda and Link in SMK.
Like others said, that's the OoT commercial. But I resent the "Or will you play like (a girl)?" line, pfft. :P I played it to death.
Super Mario Kart was awesome...but no where do I remember racing against a Dodongo.
Dodongo racing! not only do you have to keep your lead, you also have to keep on the rolling dodongo!
Yeah. Thats Zelda.
'Get the girl, or play like one'?. Nice to see Nintendo firmly reinforcing those derogatory gender stereotypes!
i really don't think mario wears a pointed green hat... does he even where green!?
I was expecting Mario to zoom in and smoke link with a red shell like halfway through that video. ...
like should totaly be in Mario kart!
You guys sure do make a lot of mistakes...
who's drunk at the switch?
I've been saying for years that the Mario Kart franchise needs to become Nintendo Kart and include characters from all their games like Smash Bros does. It also gives loads more scope for innovative track designs too.
"Get the girl, or play like one."
Oh man thats so great. If only they did that today to advertise games. I coulve sworn Ive seen some sort of advertising like that for Duke Nukem back in the day.
(Jumping on wrong video bandwagon)
Hey! thats Zelda!
By the way It was a cool 1992 commercial but YOU KNOW THE "Will you get the girl or PLAY LIKE ONE?" line would NEVER EVER make it to TV in today's super PoliticallyCorrect world.
Ahhhh PCness.. lets everyone pretend like we're all decent human beings while in the background humanity is rotting to the core.
Have a nice day!
Ok, so was that the green shell?
And I totally didn't see anything about two speeds...
I believe THIS is the real commercial?

Here's the link you want:

Wow... I didn't know Mario Kart had horses you could ride... XD
Man, I thought I was seeing things again. First, this morning's mix up with the real name of the creator of the 2D Zelda, and now this.
I don't remember that level in Mario Kart...
@Riven:
Actually they had to pull that commercial back in '97 for that very reason. They replaced it with a very similiar commercial not too much long after.
Notice how there is no name attached to this story. That's because the author can't face the shame of people knowing they don't know the difference between Zelda and Mario kart lol.
Yeah, Ocarina of Time is my favorite Mario Kart game too.
Way to screw up, guys.
However, this was ALSO a hilarious commercial, so you are forgiven.
I'm so confused right now... @_@
Heh, cool OoT commercial, I almost forget how cheeseball commercials were throughout the 90's.
Was this some like subversive Mario Kart commercial? I felt like the background was like blinking "BUY MARIO KART, BUY MARIO KART"...cause right after I watched it, i ran down 2 my local EB, but fortunately they were outta the game.
I own Super Mario Kart, so I already did my part.
thats a zelda comercial and its pretty fun
jk...
I wonder why there haven't been any comments yet about this article linking to the wrong video!
this version of mariokart is way better than the one I remember
lololol its zelda :P
I remember seeing that advert on the day that Zelda came out. I was 10, and it was my birthday, and I was waiting for my Dad to come home with my copy of the game.
I was bouncing off the walls with anticipation. I played it for hours on end that day. It's still one of my favourite games.
And that's my little story about the sexist OoT advert.
It's... Link the Barbarian!
Conan soundtrack is still one of the best, I hope they've got a hold of it for the Conan MMO. If they did Nintendo Kart DD style with a host of themed karts and tracks I might never leave the house again.
@Limey:
Win.
This is a gaming blog? Thats the Legend of Zelda, not Mario Kart. Can't even tell the difference...
I see Mario Kart commercial. "Dyn-o-mite!" ha.
My favorite Nintendo commercial of that generation. "SUNDAYSUNDAYSUNDAY...and saturday" was already a popular joke in middle school.
Dynomite!
lol that commercial reminds me of this
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3i3CfzUFlRY
I don't think I ever managed to unlock the "too fast" speed setting of the game.
I guess I'm really no good at games. *sigh*
haha.... it change already, good thing i saw it early... 2 commercial in 1
DYNOMITEEEEEEEE
people actually used to say that? :/
Holy crap! I damn near ran into the wall trying to run out and get this game...THAT's how you do a commercial!
@yidali:
When Jimmy Walker was still on TV.
I love retro ads,but my favorite is "Genesis Does".He he cool ads.Today we only have people throwing water ballons to each other and girls pooping.
Sunday Sunday SUNDAY!!!
DY-NO-MIIITE!
Holy crap, that's hilarious. Best advert EVER - full of 90s kitsche!
That was hilarious. And they did it really well. I could imagine seeing that kind of ad for a monster truck rally or something.
I must as you all a question.
Have you all seen Yoshi's go-kart really GO!?
Wow. Sounds like something for a monster truck ad.
I think we've been spoiled this generation...
DYN-O-MITE!
Neat - I never see commercials for those monster truck rallies any more. I went to a couple when I was a kid - are they still doing that?
On another note - can someone post a link to the OoT CM that was posted in error and the first half of the posters were talking about? :) Now my curiosity is piqued.
I like this one more:

To this day my friends and I scream "GIANT MUD PIT" when appropriate (playing Mario Kart, raining weather, seeing a giant mud pit, etc). Although we're a bit more dramatic than the commercial...I could have sworn they emphasized it more.
Cruel, cruel memory...
