For all the talk of how the Wii is lacking graphic-wise, Super Mario Galaxy looks gorgeous. (And has since last year's E3!)

Ashcraft, you jerk! I'm more impatient as ever, now.
Wow... like... Wow... this looks like a lot of fun. :)
Wow. This looks damn good. Not just graphically, either, the gameplay smacks of Mario 64, a welcome return if you didn't enjoy picking up shines that much.
looks extremely good, and extremely fun
this honestly proves that just because graphical capabilities dont match xbox or ps3 doesnt mean it makes everything look awful. Some people dont seem to understand that.
That looks unbe-f-ing-lievable!
I just wish they'd show something that wasn't dominated by blackness. I think I'll get tired of the constant black horizon.
Without a doubt I will get this game just based on the track record of the series, but so far I'm just not wowed.
Did they say when it will be out on the 360 and PS3? lol, No1 game for Xmas I would bet on it.
Wow....this should sell a few million wii's
@doubtful:
Watch the video again, more closely this time. There are quite a few environments that aren't "in space." For example, the area with the thwomp.
First I have to come up with the money... Then I have to wait. The second part is probably the harder of the two. My Wii is kinda bored and lonely seeing as how I don't have any money to buy any VC games. That's the only thing worth buying for a while, it seems. :\
looks f-in awesome
Graphical power is seen in the details, like pebbles and cragy faces. Mario doesn't have these things, but then again graphical details aren't what make Mario great. Honestly, good art direction will make any game look good on any platform.
I'm not looking forward to this game...I don't like Mario in 3D...yes I'm one of the few that don't like Mario 64 either...always got sick/nauseated from playing that game; especially if someone else was playing it and I was watching.
Holy cow, this game looks insane. Seems like Nintendo is ceratinly sending a big shout-out to Nights Into Dreams here. Looks to be one of Nintendo's most innovative revamp of a franchise since, well, Zelda II. Thanks for helping me forget just how lame Super Mario Sunshine really was, Kotaku.
It does show some nice graphics, but the black background predominance is not something I crave, even though there are some scenes in some other environments.
It looks a bit confusing. I just wonder what the control scheme will be. I hope it'll be more than just Mario 64 with a Wiimote.
Still, Paper Mario looks way more beautiful.
DO WANT! Now all that's left is waiting.
Looks great so far. Graphically and it looks incredibly creative. I'm hoping that we get much, much bigger planets though, with a surface area the size of Mario 64 or Sunshine.
holy crap of craps, that looks insanely wild. i think the last mario that had me this excited might have been super mario world. it also helps that i'm a sucker for space.
Man, this game looks nuts. I wonder how the Wii Remote is used for it.
this game seems to have been custom built to show off the wii...which is something the previous couple marios have missed. the n64 was famously (or infamously depending on how you look at it) built to handle mario 64 and not the other way around. sunshine was made as an extension of its predecessor, and while i think it's a terribly underrated game, if you don't like mario in 3D sunshine wasn't made to convince you otherwise. watching the trailer for galaxy reminded me of the feeling of elation i got from watching the first gears of war trailer. nintendo has some of the best staff artists in the industry, especially at this new tokyo ead (jungle beat is incredible), and coupled with overhauled mechanics and camera it looks like this may be more than a simple upgrade from the previously established formula. the formula seems to indicate that every couple mario titles the series takes a dramatic leap forward. ignoring doki doki panic/mario 2, mario to mario 3 was that leap, as was mario world to mario 64 (i don't consider yoshi's island part of the series proper.) i hope it's as good as it seems...but in the mean time i'll get some butt stomping done in super paper mario.
I wonder if they'll drop the camera like they did with Zelda. If so, then I don't mind, so long as they make the pre-set camera angles interesting and fair.
I'll be honest, the way that camera moves and the complex 3D spaces, I think this will make people confused and motion sick.
I'd say this looks awesome, but I'm afraid awesome just isn't enough.
for those asking about the control scheme, read the hands-on from E3 2006.
I think this and Metroid will really show what the wii can do graphically. Anyone still remember Metroid lol? It will have been delayed for what? a year? Considering how great Mp1 + 2 looked on the cube and the amount of polish time they have had now I expect 3 to look fantastic.
Huge Mario fan ever since I was a kid, but I'm not sure what I am seeing here, it just aint doing it for me.
Feels like the water jetpack all over again overtop of my Mario 64.. aw well theres always paper mario for the real experiance.
Yet again Nintendo makes every other developer on their console look like total amateurs.
Looks spectacularily fun, and the graphical style is really sweet, though all they really did was just backlit everything...
I gotta ask though... Wasn't Miyamoto the one who said FPS games give him motion sickness? Wonder how he stands all of this gravity switching...
This is like The Little Prince: The Video Game.
Love it.
The game looks enjoyable, but I'm not certain that it's got a Mario feel for me. Then again, I've felt that the franchise has left me in its wake since after Super Mario 3.
Trippiest game EVER.
"Then again, I've felt that the franchise has left me in its wake since after Super Mario 3."
...Super Mario World is pretty much THE Mario.
I wasn't expecting much. For me, both Mario and Sonic pretty much died when sidescrollers went out of fashion.
After watching that clip though, I have to say it has some potential. And with the motion controls it could be really good.
Oh well there goes another 50 bucks dammit. ;)
game looks great, question is, HOW MUCH CONTENT IS IN IT. I forsee this game looking great at the sacrifice of being more shallow than all the other Marios before it. That seems to be the issue with the Wii, resource management, since it obviously is working with less resources. Just a thought/observation. What do you guys think?
Well the Wii (i.e. Gamecube) should be more than adequate to handle relatively cartoonish graphics like this (not a slam against cartoonish graphics: I'm not much of a fan of this-gen's brownfest).
I played this at e3, and the mario feel is still there trust me.
too bad E3 is dead now...
Another fricken awesome thing about this game seems to be its music! Listen!
@Soygen
From what i know the Wiimote controls a little cursor on the screen that you can use to attack enemies and interact with various parts of the scenery. That was from some demo i saw a while back though, so things will probably change a bit for when the game is actually released.
1. To compare this game graphically with Motorstorm or Gears or Oblivion, seriously, put down the paint thinner. It's pretty, but not THAT pretty.
2. I agree with the commenters that said they didn't like 3d mario a lot. I got motion sickness a lot from older 3d games myself, including Mario 64, but I don't think this will be as bad. I'd probably want to try playing it.
I don't think I've ever had my mouth hang open while watching a game trailer before.
I didn't like the n64 and gamecube because all it got is a few really good games and the rest are so so. Mario 64 was really good and again, this mario galaxy looks super, I hope this round they would have more good games.
It looks a good 17 kinds of swish. I like it. But then, I've liked all the mario games, even sunshine. Fun times.
Wow, just wow. That looks so good. I can't even wait to get my hands on that. Galaxy I think will be the Wii's killer game, and I think it will appeal to the non-gamer as well. It just looks that fun.
Oh, and btw, graphics wise, the game looks amazing. Thumbs up Ninty!
Dudes....gamevideos sucks *ass*. Can we sweitch back to game trailers or just the good old 'Tube?
@Karlott: Well, comparing it with Motorstorm or Gears of War is pretty pointless. The graphics look fantastic - for what it is. What it isn't is realistic. Does that matter? No.
(Wait: I just reread the comments. Nobody compared the graphics with those two games. Damn, another Kotaku-commenter straw man? Sigh.)
Wii's graphical limitations are much more of a problem with realistic-looking games, where it can probably still look pretty good if developers can put in the effort, but nothing like the technically powerful platforms, even in SD.
Even there it's not all about graphical power. Zelda: TP looks very much better than Motorstorm in my opinion, even though the graphics are technically hugely worse; excellent art design and more visually interesting subject matter. (Not a knock against Motorstorm: it looks fantastic, again for what it is.)
Personally I liked Mario Sunshine lots and I'm looking forward to this. Agree with some others that the black backgrounds could get a bit dull but we'll see.
With this game they presumably are intentionally scheduling it for Christmas so I hope that delay also allows them to make it as near to perfect as possible (rather than having it finished now and letting it sit on a shelf until then). :)
BTW, why did xbox and PS2 seem to miss this genre of games? I can't be low demand or they didn't have the talent Nintendo had in this area? Or I miss something? I love my ps2 but it seems to be missing some Mario type of game.
Look- once I can even lay hands on a Wii, I'm gonna buy one. Likewise, once Super Mario Galaxy hits, I'll buy it too. And yes, this game looks good.
But is it really a Mario game at this point?
Sure they've got the look and they've got the sound, and the cion collecting...but controlling a miniscule Mario on a often distant rotating 3D surface over a black backdrop? With the Wii-mote?
Just how is that gonna play? Is there camera control?
What made Mario 64 so great was it's ability to bring classic gameplay mechanics into a 3d environment and combine it with a user controlled camera?
Can Nintendo pull it off again with the Wii-mote???
Did anyone else notice the changed logo? (wikipedia has the first one) To be honest I don't think for the style of this game the graphics could get much better. The point seems to be get from one end of the astroid field to the other.
Wow this has got me wanting the game more than ever the graphics look beautiful and it looks like its shaping up to be a great platformer with a breath of fresh air. It kind of reminds me of that treasure hunting game in sonic adventure 2 where you had to go into space.
Looks fun but I hope another Gamecube doesn't need to be duct taped. =P
Ok, first of all I'm really looking forward to this and will be purchasing it, it does look really cool and different and there seems to be a lot of things to do...
BUT...
I'm worried that you're going to spend half the game flying through an "on rails" space section that you have absolutely no control over.
I mean, it just looks like your just being shot from one place to the next with no real input as to where you are going, sort of like switching between the different land masses in Katamari, you start moving and then have no control over what you're doing until you get to your destination.
There doesn't seem to be the same level of freedom as there was in 64 or sunshine.
There's still an awful lot that we don't know about the game sure, but from this video and the e3 video, that's the impression I'm starting to get.
Looks very impressive!! i hope it will be easy to control or all these casual gamers may be to intimidated to buy.
did anyone else notice the striking similarity to that ratchet and clank game going commando with the mini planets and all that?
nintendo is truly great at making top notch games that give 3rd person developers something to strive for just a shame that they had to turn to sony and insominiac to rip off an idea.
I think Sunshine was a horrible game.. I tried playing it but it was too much work for them to make use of the Trigger buttons on the gamecube. Sorry.. Yoshi Island.. I think that should be included as part of the Mario Series and was made to show off the Super FX2 Chip.. very good job and a super fun game.
They only showed one stage so i dont know I'd prefer the planets to be a little bigger tho. But gameplaywise im sorry but this beats all other games in to submission.
OMGOTY
Coolness indeed. hope I don't die before it comes out!
if this is the kind of game to look forward on the system im awfully glad im not owning a wii.
that looks incredibly mediocre.
mario 64 with weird zooming around in space and lots of black background.
Looking forward to it!
