Simon from GameSetWatch points the gaming world to Vintage Computing and Gaming's preview of "The Best NES Game Hack of All Time", Mario Adventure. Admittedly, there isn't much competition, as dick jokes, pot references, and Nazi-mapped plumbers abound in the NES ROM hack domain. But it does sound special, featuring new enemies, new power-ups, weather effects, progress saving, and updated graphical changes to the Super Mario Bros. 3 game engine.
The .nes file is available at VC&G but you'll need an emulator to play the game. I'm certainly not going to do this, but a friend of mine will. Maybe he'll post his own impressions in the comments.
