The NPD Group has issued a profile on the buying and gaming habits of 11,638 games in its "Gamer Segmentation II" report, providing a detailed cross-sectional analysis of the 191 million estimated US gamers. In it, we learn that the group that buys the most, dubbed "Heavy Gamers" are also the smallest demographic. This isn't our hobby's portliest, mind you, just the ones who have the most impressive/scary gaming habits.
According to Gamespot's summation of the report, the Heavy Gamer market makes up just 2% of the gamer population, but buys at an impressive average rate of 4.5 games per month and plays just shy of 40 hours a week. They game like it's going out of style. The Heavy Gamer group also happens to be the subset that does the most online purchases, leading the pack with Virtual Console, Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store downloads.
Seriously, how do you guys find the time? I'm lucky if I can squeeze in an hour a day anymore.
