The PlayStation 3 saw a nearly 300 percent increase in sales since the 40GB and 80GB models hit on Nov. 3, Sony Computer Entertainment of America let us know today in a press release.
The short release goes on to say that PS3 sales were up 245 percent this Black Friday compared to last year's Black Friday. Of course last year Sony was still having stock issues with their shaky launch of the console.
Here's the full press release:
Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced that overall PlayStation brand unit sales during the week including Black Friday increased by 178%, sales dollars increased by 154%.Below are the sales figures for each PlayStation platform for the week including Black Friday for the top 10 retailers in North America:
PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) hardware sales increased by 245% when compared to Black Friday sales last year.
Since November 2nd, and the availability of both the 40GB and 80GB PS3 models, PS3 hardware sales have increased by 298%.
PSP® (PlayStation® Portable) hardware sales increased by 136% when compared to previous week sales.
PlayStation®2 (PS2) hardware sales increased by 287% when compared to previous week sales.
It probably doesn't hurt that the Playstation 3 has two rock-solid games under it's belt just in time for the holidays as well. Then again, as Totilo reminded me, we don't know what the raw numbers are and statistics are evil. I mean, my post has increased 600 percent from last week's post count. Throw into that the fact that this cites "top ten retailers" and I'm at a total loss about what this really means.

Okay, the numbers are unclear, but it seems the PS3 is finally finding it's feet. The price cut and good games helps of course.
Still a pity about the BC though. That's a dealbreaker for me.
I've seen a bunch get sold at Best Buy so not surprising
What it means is all nay-sayers should start stretching their stomachs for when they have to eat their words.
I'm guessing this means, "we shipped three times as many units to stores with the launch of this new SKU" which pretty much means nothing. Still, I think the PS3 is getting on its feet somewhat, but it's probably too late to dethrone the 360 this generation.
@Dragonzigg: ditto. Good for them still, but damn.. games could come out faster still. The future in terms of releases seems weird to me. I mean after MGS, FF, GTA and whatnot.. what then? Those are taking forever to come out, and I think it may be because games from here on out WILL take forever; it takes a lot to build up big games now compared to generations past. I'm feelin that this slow stream of games - for all three consoles - is something we may have to get used to.
Well the 40GB is good for sales it seems. Although I always check to see if it's shipped vs. sold..
Sony:"PS3 Sales Up Nearly 300 Percent"
Yes, but how long can you guys sustain this increase, or will it just be another spike? It's great and all to celebrate when you have a reason to, but I hope Sony isn't deluded enough to think this will last for much long.
I still remember Microsoft and Nintendo doing the same thing last generation.
@Dragonzigg:
It's a deal breaker for me too. I plan on buying a 60gig version off of eBay one day, or just wait till they put it back in.
@Shoemaster: yeah too late this generation, cuz there will be another xbox in a year
Its great that the PS3 is finally selling better - I was thinking about getting one but decided on a 360 because it had better games..... come on Sony, give us some good stuff!
Liar. It's only 298%.
I don't call that nearly 300%. That's a significant leap. Another Sony Fanboy post from Kotaku. I don't even know why I bother coming here anymore.
Pretty sure 245% over last year still isn't a high amount.
Needs more games, and more backwards compatibility... You wouldn't believe how many frustrated customers I come by at my work who were not aware that the 40GB system doesn't play PS2 games.
Oh, by the way, I forgot the /sarcasm tag up there.
Good job Sony the hardware prices quickly Sony. This will be good. I can hear the xbot troll train coming over the hill. Time to get going...
a bunch of my friends are interested in buying 60gig versions off amazon this christmas. im glad i didn't buy the 40gig, but now when i look at the situation, if i didn't have one even now, i would probby buy the 40g, since i still have two ps2's in the corner.
Naughty Dog and Insomniac saving christmas...
well that's good. but when you have to advertise in magazines, an ad for a game that was a release tite (resistance) that's over a year old as a semi new title available for the console, the console is really lacking any a+ games.
ok, well they don't say 'new game' in the ad, but i don't see any ads for year old games for the other consoles running in the magazines. if any decent titles were released and the console was doing well, this ad would have been shelved 6 months ago.
you don't see gears of war ads for the 360 (ok you do for the pc).
No... uh... snarkiness intended, but this is kinda familiar.
"IGNcube: So tell us, why is everyone at Nintendo so happy?
Perrin Kaplan: Well, number-one we did incredibly well in 2003 on both of our hardware systems. In fact, we basically won 2003 and moved ourselves to the number two spot and Microsoft's Xbox to number three."
"IGNcube: That's excellent news. Congratulations. So let's go over this from the beginning. How were December GameCube sales?
Perrin: Year-on-year we were up 68.5% [in December] based on units sold. We sold about 1.1 million GameCubes in December. We did a little under half a million in December of last year by comparison. For the whole year we were up 35%. Our competitors were both in the negative."
[cube.ign.com]
@Kirbytheslayer: we got it, nice job!
i dunno what this means anymore, once upon a time, i knew that if something was close 100% it meant it was doing really well.
Now that we "broke" the 100% barrier, what the hell is the limit?
500%?
800%?
1000%?
100000000%?
When will the "beyond the 100% barrier" madness end?
Just give us the bloody numbers so we can compare with last week for haruhi sake....
The ps3 is finally starting to get rolling, and people are finally seeing what we knew half a year ago.
@caseypenk: are you saying that gamecube numbers didn't predict anything?
or are you saying that 245% is a big difference than 68%?
im confused
what was so bad about nintendo being happy about beating the xbox.?
Good for sony. I dont have a ps3, but I do own a 360. I glad they are starting to do good cause competition is a good thing.
Ill have to pick a ps3 up in the next few months.
Give me a 40 GB PS3 with proper backwards compatibility, and sure, I'll buy one.
Until then, Sony can get fucked.
@Onizuka-GTO: over a hundred percent increase means more than double...
ie. 100 sold last year, 100% of 100 is 100, so 100%increase is 200 245% increase means two and a half times what they sold last year at this time. don't they teach math in school anymore? :P jk
Yea this means absolutely nothing. I will wait till the hard numbers come in from NPD to determine where the PSTriple stands. I'm no fanboy but up until now the 360 & Wii have dominated.
@Elixir: such bad words coming out of such a cute little avatar
@DigitalHero: If it comes, it would only be because you are trolling for it.
@caseypenk: Thats pretty funny but I think that the PS3 will outsell the Gamecube but I dont know how much further it will go than that. Its still to early to say, but it wont be that way much longer.
@runandgun:
Indeed. Sony's issues with PS3 will only make them a better competitor too. I also would to say that Insomniac and Naughty Dog were pivotal for this holiday. If Sony fumbled this holiday it would be basically over good thing it didn't happen yet. The good new marketing campaign helps too.
@theprof00: The GameCube was killed in the end by the PS2 and Nintendo tried to spin slight pick-up into long-term success.
The PS3 is selling far less than the Wii when the numbers tally at the end of the year, and it will probably remain that way. Black Friday sales based on a recent price cut are not telling of overall performance.
@Onizuka-GTO:
Uh.... Wow.
If it INCREASED 100%, that would mean it doubled because it increased by the amount it was, total. Now, obviously, if we capped it at 100%, and last month you sold 100 consoles, what would you do if the next month you sold 201 consoles? It'd be a 101% increase.
Increasing 300% means it quadrupled.
@Mit:
They should learn how to read then...40GB says is not backwards compatible on the box
Did this really need a press release?
@kneehighspy: I just have to say this, just to prove you wrong.
The Wii is still advertising Geometry Wars and Wii Play.
Geometry Wars came out two or three years ago, and Wii play came out back in January or so.
@theprof00: If I didn't include that second post, you can guarantee that somebody would start flaming me.
@NitrousO:
Oh GTFO.
@Kirbytheslayer: Geometry Wars Galaxies isn't old at all, as it's a much larger and expanded version of Retro Evolved. Wii Play, because of the controller pack-in, has a very clear reason to be advertised.
Also, The Wii isn't exactly choking on great games either.
@Capt-Fury-:
i believe it says it on the back of the box, in small print. it should say it on the front of the box in large print.
there are gonna be some angry kids who get a ps3 this christmas and put in their ps2 titles and they don't work.
everyone seems to think that 'everyone' in the world knows that the 40gb ps3 doesn't work with ps2 titles. i guarantee you that 80% of the buying parents do not know this. but shortly will after christmas morning.
@Capt-Fury-:
And spending $400 to play PS2 games doesn't make much sense. I have a core 20GB unit (with a 160GB HDD), and I still haven't packed up my PS2 because of poor audio output. The softer vid output doesn't look quite good either especially if it's upscaled.
I actually walked into a Gamestop this weekend and saw someone buying a PS3, and get this: the clerk wasn't trying to talk him out of it. I was shocked, shocked at this display of competently adequate salesmanship! The guy actually walked out of the store with a PS3 without being hassled by the staff. Amazing!
I guess even the dumbasses who work at game stores have been brought around by the price drop/40GB model. This is the first time I've ever heard someone ask about a PS3 in a game store and not heard the clerk try to talk them into an Xbox 360 or Wii instead, even if they clearly don't want one or already have one. It happened to me and it's happened to everybody else I've overheard trying to buy one before this past weekend.
@Onizuka-GTO: it's over Nine-Thousand. :)
And honestly. I agree. If one week you sell onehundred, and next week you sell four hundred, That's great! (ngage numbers guys) You just sold 300% more! Gratz!
Of course, if your rival is selling 20,000 units a week constantly from week 1 to week 73.. that's a 0% growth (constant sell outs, I mean you wii)
What would you rather have?
Sony, Percentials are misleading, 300% means shit if you're still in third place.
Well it was Black Friday so I'm guessing all consoles experienced a sales spike, not just the PS3.
@caseypenk: true but the wii is the fastest selling console of all time, along with a price tag almost half i think it's hard to compare success against the gamecube to success against the wii@
@NitrousO: im pretty sure ps3 will sell a lot more than the gamecube, albeit gamecube was a great system they only sold 21m units in the world ps3 is almost halfway there, and if trend continues it will sell nearly 3 times what it sold last year by the end of 2008, so 24million, unless my numbers are off, i thought they sold 6mill this year but i may be wrong
@Moonshadow101: Kneehigh said that Gears of War being advertised counted because it was a larger and expanded version of Gears of War. Therefore, it counts.
@kneehighspy: What kind of parent throws out their kid's Ps2 before even trying the Ps3?
December 1st: "Well, I don't need this anymore"
"Daddy, why did you smash my Ps2 with a hammer?"
"I'll tell you on Christmas"
"Good job, dumbass, I can't figure this one out.
December 25th: "Hey, it doesn't work"
"It says so on the box. Why the hell did you smash my Ps2 a month ago?"
this means jack shit... they had a total of like 400,000 available last year at this time [kotaku.com]
It increased 300% in early November because people knew that the price cut was coming! Sony announced it back in October! Why the hell would you buy a PS3 when you knew that the cheaper models were coming?
Talking purely in percentages without giving a reference is even lame for statistics.
@DigitalHero: That was childish of you to say the least.
@Huginn:
While you are right about percents being potentially misleading, the differences are quite so huge as you make them out to be though I assume you did that for the sake of argument. Also, how many weeks can the Wii really go at it? It strikes me that the Wii wasnt built to be a long lasting contender like the PS3 (though I might be wrong).
This is honestly great, but last month they sold one third what the 360 did. So if this brings them into parity it's a good more but I'd guess they want more.
@Huginn: again you are comparing the fastest selling console in history to the ps3. i think it is fair to say that when looking at a graph of this it shows an upward trend which might mean "shit"
@Kirbytheslayer:
geometry wars hasn't been a wii title for two or three ye
