Well at least they're man enough to admit it. In an interview with high-brow German news magazine Spiegel, Ubisoft's Yves Guillemot and Alain Corre have fessed up that mistakes were made in the lead-up to the Wii's launch. Specifically, in how rushed and sub-par their launch titles were.
Wir haben Fehler gemacht (We made mistakes).
That you did. In their defence, they've acknowledged that this was due to them wanting to get a lot of games out on the system as quickly as possible, and that they've learned from this mistake and will be making amends with future titles.
Which is all well and good, but is it too late? I know when I hear the words Ubisoft and Wii, I don't think of quality, exclusive titles that make the most of the system's innovative control scheme. I think of ports. And then I think of poop. It's going to take some special games to shake that perception.

Screw Ubi.
I'm still waiting for an apology for the crap-metal soundtrack on Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. Ubi has been dead to me since.
Atleast by admitting it, there will hopefully be change upon the horizon?
Seriously the formula of
old PS2/Gamecube game + wii controls = success
is pissing this wii owner off.
am i supposed to feel sorry for this... company?
f**k them
Acceptance is the first step to recovery... or repentance for that matter.
Agreed. All the way around. They can start making amends with a AAA Wii specific FPS game that rocks the house.
c'mon, rabbids was halfway-okay... i can't forgive them for red steel though. I daren't even touch the ports...
.... I guess I avoided the crap games. When I think of "Ubi" and "Wii" all I can picture is a crazed rabid with a plunger running across my screen screaming. I can't wait for #2.
It's not their fault entirely, who would have guessed that the Wii would have blown up like it did? Certainly not Ubisoft or any other developer other than Nintendo.
Rabbids was good, even if it had NO ENDING....and well red steel SUCKED but theres was potential there for somthing that we will hopefully see in a better developed sequal
Rabbids, sure.
But Rabbids doesn't offset all the other crappy games they shoveled out afterwards. Sure, maybe Red Steel was a forced title that could've used some time, that happens, but it still reflects on the company.
Regardless of what they say, it's what they do that's important, and they need to work on getting more quality into their Wii titles or otherwise they'll be stuck with this perception for this cycle.
It is because of game developers like Ubi that everyone is beginning to hate their Wii. Unfortunately, Nintendo can't rely on "novelty factor" and the Japanese for long unless the game developers start delivering.
I loved Rabbids, but it is pretty damned hard to screw up a game that is nothing but a giant compilation of mini-games. I agree with the assessment of Ubi's direction on the Wii so far. Red Steel and the ports they've done so far were utter crap.
If they want to shovel out port after port, they should at least play "The Godfather: Blackhand Edition" and take some notes. That game was ridiculously good for a port.
As it stands, I'm going to be renting any and all Ubi games to try them out before I decide on purchasing them.
Well, Rayman was pretty game even if it was short, it's still fun.
Red Steel had quite a few issues, but if Ubisoft could of managed to fix at least the control scheme issue then that game would of been way better for the most part cause it's actually a descent game.
Oh, NOW they'll make games worth your money.
Farcry: Vengance was just plain theft.
Is it me, or is Ubi still being ambiguous?
Are they releasing "new, improved" casual games (Super Hamsterz?).. or are they basically announcing that they're going to put actual effort into their more traditional offerings?
"Sorry our games were shit, the truth is we didn't try to make them any good!
but I promise only good games from now on!"
Yeah, I totally believe you guy!
How about the apologize for their SHITTY PS3 GAMES as well?!
Kyle81: I'd imagine they would if anyone had actually played them.
(oooo-er)
Don't worry, I still love you Ubi. Unlike some folk, I'll still tuck you in at night and give you a cookie. Just don't make another Far Cry ok?
Ubi, is my second favorite company.
Seriously, I played most Ubi titles on wii (gotta love online rentals) and they were pretty good except Far Cry and PoP Horrid Camera.
@Kyle81: They would have apologized if anyone bought them :P
Damn it beaten >_<
Well at least they're apologizing for it. They did dig themselves into a hole with this one. It's going to take a lot for them to make up for Red Steel and the others.
Not to mention the ports that are half-assed. They didn't even make ports from new games (GRAW, Rainbow Six, etc). I know the Wii doesn't have the graphical horsepower as the other two, But I think they can make it work in some form or another no?! (though they do have to contend with people who see this as flamebait).
All in all, I really like a lot of Ubisoft's games. Not to mention the upcoming Assassins Creed, Endwar, Prince of Persia with the glove etc.
WOW they actualy fessed up to it WOW. Thats going to hurt. Really though they can make good games yet they where trying to make quick dumb cash ins. I mean really did they need us to vote with our money for them to see these games where not ready for out doors play.
It made Ubi look like a start up really than a company trying to do battle with EA. I say apologize with some good games. Red steel two? a real version? or at least try some thing you are good at? What is Ubi good at?
I don't think any apology could make up for the horrible dialog in Red Steel.
Random enemy: You're too late sucker!
Random enemy2: You'll never get pass Amerikija (yes he actually said this)
Random enemy3: SAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Regardless of all the crap they shoveled out for the Wii so far, their former track record convinces me that Red Steel 2 will rock.
Complain about Ubisoft all you want but if EA acquires them those early Wii titles will look like masterpieces.
Funny I actually LIKE Prince of Persia, even if it is a rehash of Sands. The control system actually works in it.
@Kantwon: I think its supposed to be like that XD
They were going for a cheap B-Movie feel.
i love you Ubisoft, keep up the good work!
@Cloaca:
I hate to say this, but I think that EA is the only third party to do the Wii justice, despite my hate for them. Madden, SSX, and Godfather were really good games that were worth every penny, something I WISH Ubi would give a shot. Third parties can bitch all they want about me only buying Nintendo games, but that's what happens when Ubi give us 3/4 of our launch games and they're all cry worthy.
EA has made some great titles, but for the most part the 3rd party publishers seem baffled by the differences between the Wii and everything else. Perhaps given more time?
@cloaca
I would have to disagree with your statement. I wasn't a fan of EA, but with the release of Wii, they have been making an effort. I think they have been the best third party publisher on the Wii. Controls for The Godfather were just awesome. Motion controls for Madden helped breathe some life into a tired franchise. In my opinion, people that complained about SSX Blur controls didn't take the time to learn them. The graphics for the Harry Potter game look great and I have high hopes for Boogie. So far EA is kicking Ubi's ass. (btw I like the handle cloaca. Haven't heard that since high school science)
@Hellsing: "They would have apologized if anyone bought them :P"
So what you're saying is that people who bought PS3s are smart enough to know shitty games when they see them.
"We'll make more"
Even though we all know the Wii sells... We also know that most Wii games suck. Well, people wanted cheap and tacked on "innovation" so there u go, u have crap graphics and tacked on controls. Sell away... thanks for promoting quick mini-game unimmersive games low quality games.
Hopefully the PS3 and 360 will pick up sales again soon. I want something worth buying, a movie and a meal, not a gay commercial and a snack'a'jack.

@Tanod:
Explain why Spiderman 3 for the PS3 sold so much despite a low install base then.
Ubisoft has 2 Wii games coming out in the next 3 months: Cosmic Family which looks like mini-games for toddlers and a port of their PS2 game Driver.
So we'll see...
@totalwar23:
Because, like me, they got suckered in by the prospect of playing as the Green Goblin in all his super powered, pumpkin bomb throwing, evil glory.
What we got was a very hard to control glider, no personalized missions, and people calling us Spidey.
So... can we have our money back?
Ubisoft's first Wii games are a prime example of what Reggie was talking about a couple of months ago. THIRD PARTY developers do not put their best design teams on Wii projects.
I expect with the success of the Wii Ubi and others will make a very dedicated effort to produce quality games for the Wii in the future. If done right, these games can appeal to the more mature Wii owner (I am not talking about age, but rather having a preference for games with more mature themes), and not compete directly with most of Nintendo's first-party offerings like ten variations of Mario party games.
Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 and My word Coach have gotten a lot of praise. Also from what has been said about Red Steel 2 and considering what the dev team managed to do on such a rush job despite no expierence on fps games much less a whole new control scheme I think Ubisoft will vastly redeem itself.
Quite a lot of people that devoted more then a few hours grew to love Red Steel. Quite a few games people dismissed just after the first hour later on grew to love the game after spending more time with it. Killer 7 had it's haters give up on the game after just an hour or two as well.
EA devoted whole studios to the Wii and DS. They like Ubi smelled that the wii would bring a lot of money to them. Ubi being smaller rushed the games making them suffer.
The Red Steel team did a far more competant game then a lot of supposedly elite game dev teams have done. They put a lot of effort into it and once refined the game ideas, concepts can be made into a far better game.
As for EA I guess people haven't seen Boogie or the other original EA wii games that are coming out. EA is also looking to make the Wii versions of games often the most fun to play.
@bornonce: Actually that was Miyamoto. Third party devs often expect crap to sell on Nintendo platforms because Sony made them believe that crap could sell on any game platform.
Somehow, I have a hard time imagining "Manhunt 2" sitting on a shelf next to "Super Paper Mario" without some suburban housewife soccer mom busy-body having a fit and calling the local news.
Nintendo, whether you like it or not, has a reputation of family friendly entertainment. I wouldn't expect the "mature" games (read: Games that warrant higher than a "T" rating) to be coming hand over fist to the Wii.
That's going to turn off a lot of gamers that crave something more than another Mario Sports title.
If anyone ask's why I read Kotaku, I'll post this.
Now Kotaku, you know I love you guys (my old screenname was Macdeth) but what kind of quoting is this?
IGN's article:
""We made mistakes," they told the magazine. According to Spiegel, Ubisoft wanted to be first to capitalize on Wii and in its haste to release product it sacrificed the quality of the titles. Ubisoft has reportedly learned from its mistakes, though, and is promising that the quality of its forthcoming Wii projects will be significantly better."
So you then go on to quote it as:
"We made mistakes." ...and then repackage it with your own words...?
I don't know if this is a valid point I'm trying to make, but really, why base articles on someone else's interpretation of the original?
For all you know from this article he could have been talking about his Memorial Day BBQ and actually said, "...Yeah, and then we made my steaks..." Maybe IGN figured that, hell, since he's from Ubisoft, he MUST be talking about their mistakes being made with their videogames and not about his latest adventure in flaming beef.
You never know until you GO TO THE SOURCE.
But then again that might be just me.
They had to rush the games out. Who knew the Wii would be a great success. They were just like every other company basically that yawned at the idea. But After the sales figures came in, they knew the Wii could make them alot of profit, so they had to make up for the crap they handed out.
Hard to argue with this. I mean versus efforts like GRAW, Rainbow Six Las Vegas, Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell Conviction, etc. where efforts on graphics and gameplay are obviously being carefully worked on, the Wii gets a mini-game Rayman (not bad but arguably the best they've got and that's pathetic -- also coming to other systems too), a somewhat poorly done Red Steel, and a lot of PS2 ports. Personally, I had high hopes for Far Cry Vengence. I mean it's just a Xbox port right? Not too hard. And yet they rushed development so badly it turned out as one of their worst Wii game.
And now we get Horsez 2 and My Word Coach. Now I'm not saying those are bad games (yet?) and I do appreciate My Word Coach's concept, I really do. But then we're back to the old Elebits vs. MGS4 example I keep using. What is it with third-party developers and Nintendo systems. It's like they see Mario and then they're stuck in this unwavering tunnel vision much like so many fanboys who keep saying Nintendo systems are kiddy or that the Wii's only about mini-games. And in a way, these fanboys are right, and why? Because they are looking for games like FF, MGS, SH, KH, DQ, etc. and developers aren't delivering such experiences to Nintendo systems. They are in this misguided idea that only Nintendo games sell on Nintendo systems and so they follow the same Nintendo game development pattern instead of spreading themselves out to cover different sectors, sectors that are in fact their forte. They pretty much just pidgeonhole each system. "Oh that one is for kiddies and that one is for mature." And in the end, they provide games like RE, MGS, FF, etc. in huge numbers, setting the idea that "hey, you want such games, then they are guaranteed to come on this other platform." Token efforts like RE or Twin Snakes on the Cube were nice, but then they'll use that as some kind of guage? Come on!! The PS2 had access to the PS1 RE games, a port of RECV, and then later got RE4 (with a substantial content boost) on top of the Outbreak spinoffs, and then you're going to measure that up against RE0 and a Remake of RE1? How about Twin Snakes? That vs. MGS2, 3, and the PS1 MGS? Twin Snakes didn't even have anything substantial added to it.
These are the kinds of things that's so infuriating about third-party developers. In many ways they set up their own falls (i.e. late and/or shoddy ports with usually less content to add insult). If you put a hardcore gamer in front of any multiplatform game to make a choice, how many would say they'd choose the Nintendo version because they say it's the best version? Or how about, based on what games so and so developer makes for each system, which of those games would lead you to your system of choice?
Is there where they say that I can get a refund for the bait and switch they pulled with Splinter Cell DA for the wii? You know, the one where they were giving fake screenshots to the magazines and online sites until the day of release?
@PapaBear: Could Rockstar plz just make a GTA or port a GTA game to the Wii? Just so people will shut up about how the Wii is so kiddy. It has fricking Manhunt 2, that game would give children nightmares for weeks. But apparently thats not enough for some people. Plz Rockstar just put out a GTA game on the Wii.
Its gonna take an incredible title for me to buy another Ubisoft game for the Wii. Red Steel was a worthless piece of crap with controls worse than dual analogue sticks. Oh and the motion recognition sucked too. Totally unforgivable.
@RiceBandit: It's the only direct quote in the original Spiegel article.
