Gifu, Japan-based developer Nippon Ichi has announced its bringing role-playing-game Makai Senki Disgaea 3 to the PLAYSTATION 3. The two previous entries in the series appeared on the PlayStation 2 — with Disgaea: Hour of Darkness also getting a PSP airing. The Nippon Ichi press release contains two screenshots of Disgaea 3, a work in-progress. Oddly, they are dated 2008. The release mentions that the "simulation RPG" will be out "this winter" in Japan for ¥7,140 (US $59). Hit the jump for another screenie.

Thanks, Byron!

yay? umm i never heard of this so i will hold judgement.
Wii port confirmed.
@Karttikeya: i woudlnt be surprised.
ive got 1 and 2 around here from a friend, and they looked cool but i got daunted when he said he was over 150 hours into part 1 and not done. im sure he's sidequesting his life away, but shit man, i just cant make that kinda comittment these days, Suikoden V took me like a month.
I saw this, and was like, dude, I'm hitting this harder than the fist of an angry god.
I love me some good Nippon Ichi jRPG lovin'.
Where?
Err, wth...
No hi-res 2D sprites?
A generic Jrpg that will do so-so in Japan and will do even worst elsewhere. Just what the PS3 needs right now!
It would have been nice if they'd put some effort into the graphics. Oh well, I'm N1's bitch. Looks like it's time to get a PS3.
Here's my true Disgaea story.
Around the time Disgaea 2 game out, I was browsing around my local GAME store at lunch time. I was looking at the new releases section, as was another guy I didn't know. The shop was pretty quiet otherwise.
When the other guy spotted Disgaea 2 on the shelf, right at the very bottom so you had to really stoop over to spot it, gave out a little involuntary squeak of excitement. A squeak. And then picked up the game as if his life depended on it. We're talking about a grown man, maybe in his late twenties.
At this point I think he realised about the squeak, and made a few furtive glances around the shop to see how many people had heard him. It was just me nearby. We both stood there in embarrassed silence, as we shared a little moment. He knew I knew about the squeak, and I knew he knew I knew about the squeak. We then bot shuffled off in opposite directions.
There's something special about a game that makes a grown man squeak!
@Lapcoil: you do realize we've got no traditional J-RPGs, right? FF is on the way, but titles like this and Shin Megami are very welcome at this point.
you're welcome...
good news :o i hope they make the story more like the 1st game. i bet the team attacks are gonna look awesome on the new consoles XD.
Oh thank god they are not making a 360 version. I lost like 180 hours to the first game (and technically I didn't completely finish it) and I have been afraid to even touch the second game out of fear that I might not see daylight for a few weeks straight.
And to all the haters out there Disgaea may not look like much but it is a heck of a lot of fun. And it isn't just a JRPG. It is a turn based strategic JRPG. Actually the recent XBLA game Band Of Bugs is very similar game-play wise but not as deep or as engrossing.
@kiigan: lol, but yeah, this franchise is pretty good actually :D
-squeak!
sweeeet. I'm just glad to see the series getting another entry. I never really cared for efforts to mess with the Disgaea formula (Phantom Brave, etc.). Good to see this even though I'm not anywhere near done with Disgaea 2.
seems like the main character will be attending demon school from the second screen shot. I'm already getting hyped for this game XD.
Its good to know the ps3 is getting more jrpgs but dang this looks like a ps2 game.
Maybe it'll be value priced to make up for the graphics. :/
this game is gonna catch a lot of shit for having ps1 graphics on the ps3...oh well.
Nah, I'm pretty sure you'd have a hard time getting that design on the chalkboard without some drastic polycutting.
Nah, I'm pretty sure you'd have a hard time getting that design on the chalkboard on the PS1 without some drastic polycutting.
Stupid browser -_-
eh their pretty small pictures. its prolly gonna be the katamari route of things. not-HD HD. i.e crisp and sharp 1080p but otherwise...
I like disgaea and all. but I might have to pass on this one. Disgaea can be a massive amount of grinding to get everything done on it, You could literaly spend several hundred hours trying to unlock and train up everything. I just dont got that kinda time and with no way to cheat on the ps3..
@Karttikeya: Really? Well, I guess I won't HAVE to buy a PS3 yet.
Seriously though, this came out of nowhere. But it's good to see they kept to their word about keeping to 2D sprites.
@Zyzex:
he said that because the graphics were underwelming, not because it's actually coming to the Wii.
I've always wanted to play one but never got around to it. If i get a ps3 i must get this.
Discgaea is probably the third best tactics game I've ever played (and I LOVE tactics games)
1. Final Fantasy Tactics
2. Front Mission 3
3. Discgaea
Disgaea is the best non-western RPG I've ever played. Everything, from the story to the gameplay, is damn perfect.
@Ashurahori: did you play shin megami tensei: nocturne? if you (or anyone) can vouch for this over that, i really gotta go back and give it a try.
@Murrytmds: how come you cant cheat on a ps3? i think we can even download game saves now, ive been meaning to sort out how...first time ive had that option since PS1's dexdrive.
This thrills me not. Where's my Disgaea DS!!!
8-bit isometrical jRPG? Just what PS3 needs right now to confirm its status of the next-gen gaming system.
You most definitely download game saves. You need a way to transfer to the PS3 though, can't download with the PS3. USB drive probably the best way.
@mayumayu: youre so right. its like this game is sucking the framerate right out of allt hose pretty E3 games.
damn, people cant just walk on by when a game looks like its gonna get a certain crowd really excited without taking a dump.
Boy NIS is pumping these out faster than Tony Hawk games these days. I just find it frustrating that they seem to be lazily resting on their laurels and not really putting any effort into improving their product. With amazing looking 2D games like Odin Sphere, having these DS level visuals (resolution really doesn't matter when the PS2's res was more than enough to display NIS's other games) there is absolutely no reason they can't focus their efforts more and make a true next gen game (or last gen for that matter). I certainly have no problem with old school visuals on DS games or XBL games, but for a full priced console release? There's already so many time consuming turn based strat rpgs out already that are so similar you might as well just save your money and replay one of them.
IF is also releasing some SRPG's on the PS3, they too look like PS2 games lol.
But even for people bitching about it, seriously, get a clue. People do love these games, theres a large crowd of people who love these types of games and its good for PS3 to be getting these games.
@Murrytmds: Several hundred? Unless you grab a strategy guide and learn all of the little tricks to power-levelling and the like, I'd say you're looking at more like several thousand. But I guess that depends on what you mean by "trying to unlock and train up everything". If you're talking building a team of Level 9999 Space Knights, all with maxed stats and perfect items, beating the Dark World, and conquering every secret map including defeating Baal, well, you might as well hook yourself up to an IV feeding tube and have the controller surgically grafted to your hand.
I never had the patience for that much grinding. Once I got a few characters up into the 400 or 500's, I began to lose interest; the numbers just started to lose all meaning.
Crap, now I *have* to get a PS3 before this comes out.
CURSE YOU NIPPON ICHI!
@kiigan: I just made a IRL LOL ;)
Okay, um.. why isn't this a PSP game? This could be done on the Dreamcast.
...Ummm... Am I the only one who despises Nippon Ichi games. I own a PS3, So I'm not being petty... I've tried Disgaea, and 3 other of his games, So I'm not just saying this.
Ahhh well, good news I suppose.
This is the game that will make me buy a PS3.
@Citan359: I'm not a big fan either, they are somewhat lower budget games and often giant grind fests, but theres a fanbase for these types of games.
Well this was certainly a pleasant surprise. Came out of nowhere too. I'm a big fan of N1's games, so I really hope it'll hold the same level of quality that the first one did. There wasn't anything wrong with the second one, but I just never got in to it as the first. Looks like I'm gonna have to get an PS3 some time in the future.
you know, Disgaea was fantastic. Loved the game. The other Nippon Ichi games? Hit and miss, but inferior to Disgaea. Disgaea 2? I'm having a hard time finding the motivation to complete. It's just so dull by comparison. Either one of two things will happen w/ Disgaea 3: it'll either blow 'em all away, or be on the continual trend of the series. Judging NI's track record, I'm skeptical.
And another RPG coming to the PS3 as well from Idea Factory: Agarest Senki

I'm looking forward to it, but I'd like to hear they're reasoning for putting it on the PS3 when it, so far, looks like that it could be done on the PS2. Or even the Wii, I guess.
Never played a Disgaea, and it looks like I never will now, unless it's on the DS. Or I'm bored enough the to buy the PSP one.
Well, it looks like I better go out and snag that PS3 now...
Finally, something new to add to my PS3 shopping list!
For those of you knocking this game for it's graphics, just go away. I personally love nippon ichi, they have so many gems that have come out. Each game they release is beautifully done, with great artwork and a wonderful atmosphere. So, the game doesn't look next gen, well neither does the wii and look how that is selling. The selling point to these games have never been graphics, they've been a wonderful story line, quirky characters with amazing character development and great gameplay. However, i'm sure that these games are not for everyone. Yes, if you wish to unlock EVERYTHING in a nippon ichi game you're probably going to grind a whole lot. But if you play through the core game it really lasts about the same as a final fantasy game does. Disgaea is easily one of my favorite games and next to FF Tactics it's definitely the best Tactical RPG out there, in my opinion.
These are the kind of games i got my ps3 for... RPGs. Btw, the characters are all drawn up, but spells are always computer generated. Many spells in these games look beautiful.
Ok, this has got me wondering for a while now ever since I read comments about the Trusty Bell stuff...
What is a "generic JRPG?" I mean, what is it that makes a JRPG "generic"? And why does it look like it's the new buzz-phrase recently? I seem to hear enough people say this about ANY RPG from Japan. Is it the new "in" thing (you know, like putting down the Wii for not being on par with 360/PS3 in graphical capabilities), or what?
As for Disgaea 3, I'm quite surprised that's coming to the PS3 actually. I remember reading something, somewhere, a while back that Sony were not allowing 2D games to appear on the PS3. Or words to that effect...
@StormTec: The game has 3D backgrounds and 3D effects in it. Also never heard there will be no 2D games on PS3
What I don't understand is the necessity of the PS3 for this game. I loved Disgaea 1 and Phantom Brave (less so, D2 and LPT, never played MK), and I'd like to give Disgaea 3 a shot. But I have a PS2, like the vast majority of everyone else in the gaming world. Looking at the screenshots above, I'm hard pressed to see why they couldn't put it on PS2 also. I mean, they're alienating potential customers (ie- me). Yeah, I could buy a PS3, but I'm not too interested yet.
@Kyle81: Wasnt the same statement done about PS1 and PS2 ?
I really dont care for graphics and stuff... but somehow I cant cast of the feeling that this was supposed to be a PS2 game and it got moved in favour of the PS3 game library.
High Rez 2D sprites are hard to make. Alot harder than 3D models but they did it once for Odin Spere so I wondre why they dont give this PS3 game the same treatment.
@ninjafetus:
Well you can't tell much from 2 early screenshots yet. They could possibly vamp up the backgrounds and we know nothing about spells and such yet. Who knows, there might be some next-gen odds and ends in this game yet.
Hopefully the PS3's power means bigger maps, more units, and no slowdowns. Disgaea was always good about that, but Odin Sphere, lovely though it was to look at, could sometimes start lagging like crazy when the screen was full.
@kiigan:
Can't say I am surprised. You should hear me squeak when I picked the game up at Gamestation.
It's official. Nippon Ichi hate money.
Wii port once the PS3 version fails to sell.
@shinko:
Think Final Fantasy Tactics... with really out there humor, tricked out job customization, and exploding penguins...
... and no, I didn't make that up!
I hope the art looks as good as Grim Grimore and Odin Sphere...
@Sheeeeeeep:
Yeah... just keep telling yourself that....
Wow this announcement just made my morning. Disgaea 3 on Ps3? I'll be saying goodbye to my family and friends for the next year or so and picking it up day 1. Hot damn.
Awesome, now we just need a Shin Megami Tensei IV, and JRPG goodness for nextgen will be complete!!
It is was too early to judge this game. Nippon Ichi would be publishing on PS2 if they weren't going to be using some sort of PS3 functionality. I have no clue what that is, because it surely isn't the graphics, but it must be something. Or maybe these are very early-development graphics and should have never been released.
I'm kinda surprised that NIS doesn't consider the Wii since their graphics haven't been that intricate. I understand why not the 360 because of how the Japanese see the console.
@Karttikeya:
Wii port confirmed.
Well, duh... They'd be bloody stupid if they kept it to the PS3, what with how pitiful it's doing.
