Frustrating Space Invaders Toy

Who are these invaders, and why are they invading?

I picked this up at the convience store near my house. Dig that it actually looks like an old skool arcade machine, complete with movable joystick. The thing that has baffled me all afternoon is a). Why can't I shoot at the badies? b). Why can't I get killed?

Taito should've at least put a clock in it or something, because otherwise, you just look at it and get pissed off.
