Sony Computer Entertainment America exec Kaz Hirai sat down with the kids at Gamespot this week to discuss the company's product line. After discussing Sony's take on the Yankee Group report that put Sony on top of MS and Nintendo in the forthcoming console war, Kaz let loose some details on the PS3 and PSP, as well as topics like UMD's and E3.
Some highlights:
- The PlayStation 3 is not currently being manufactured, but assembly lines are being reviewed
- PSone titles will be selectively released for the PSP based on time and "fit" with the PSP controls
- Sony will be referring to launch titles as games they expect to ship "day and date" with the console, not within a multi-week or -month window
- No PSP price drop or redesign is planned
Most of this stuff is company line PR-speak, but Kaz's admission that the PLAYSTATION 3 is not yet being manufactured is a bit of a surprise. We're not privvy to Sony's manufacturing capacity or assembly line details, so we won't (OMG!) flip our shit quite yet, but it does give one pause if holding Sony steady to their November launch date. Will production problems and shortages mean MASSIVE DAMAGE for Sony? We'll see!
