    Phil Talks Blu-ray Pricing

Ah, everyone's favorite deathly pale Sony Computer exec Phil Harrison says that Blu-ray hasn't hit the PS3 with "unnecessary cost." As all know, Blu-ray players are expensive, and putting such expensive hardware in the PLAYSTATION 3 logically makes it PRICEY. Not so, says Phil. He points out:

There's this sort of misunderstanding that the Blu-ray disc player for movies is somehow burdening the console with unnecessary cost. That is completely not true. We put our Blu-ray disc functionality in the console purely from a game design point of view. Once we had that storage capacity on Blu-ray disc, adding the movie playback functionality was extremely cost-effective, [the cost] is actually non-existent.

Hmmm... I thought Sony was putting Blu-ray in the PS3 to win a format war. Good to know I was completely wrong.
