Sony's decision to remove force feedback vibration from the SIXAXIS controller for the PLAYSTATION 3 was called a "strategic choice" for which the company has "no regrets." Following Sony's settlement with Immersion on patent disputes, talk of rumble returning to the PlayStation became much more positive.
SCEA president Jack Tretton said the company is "open to changing the SIXAXIS controller." Similarly, Sony Worldwide Studios' Phil Harrison, instead of denying hardware changes to Slashdot readers, simply said "it's a little too early" to date the return of rumble.
Now Inner Bits, who revealed detailed info on SCEE job cuts, say that it's already in the works.
Many have suspected that since the agreement [with Immersion], Sony will have been working on a new controller with rumble support. We can now confirm that this is the case. We've heard from two independent sources at Sony that they have been working on prototypes for several months. Officially, the corporate line is still "no comment". Unofficially, Sony is facing some difficulties with battery life; i.e. Between the rumble and the wireless support, the batteries are draining too fast to be acceptable for consumers.
Bad battery life? Sounds familiar. Hey, Sony, anyone with a Wiimote is familiar with short battery life, so don't let that hold you back. Just pack in a sensibly long USB cable and we'll call it done, okay?
PS3 Controller with Rumble in Development [Inner Bits]

Uh... My Xbox360 controller has RUMBLE and is WIRELESS and has no problems with battery life IMHO.
I get around 20-24 hrs with my Wiimote.
Looking at getting a battery pack soon.
At my friends apartment, we always have issue with Wii batteries. he keeps a huge box of batteries right next to his games, lol
The sixaxis can do 30 hrs.
15 hrs would not be acceptible by my standards.
funny, thanks to all of the anti-sony fanboys "lol i will never buy a ps3 without rumble, 360 ftw!!" blog postings, real ps3 fans will get rumble ! :D
So it's 599 USD and you have to buy new controllers to get rumble? The PS3 keeps looking better and better, huh?
Just don't use AA batteries like the 360 and Wii and we're okay.
@Arkanius: And its NOT motion sensitive and is the size of a Cornish hen.
@Barbara: Huh? What battery type would they use instead?
Cool, Three non-rumbles for some party play, and one for me on single player. I'll get one, but really I haven't missed it at all. I prefer the weightlessness actually. Sounds good though.
@Barbara: because there isn't an option for rechargeable battery packs.
last I checked I spent 20$ and haven't had to spend money on batteries since.
@ridleysaria: With the right attitude, you can blame anyone for anything.
@dadeisvenm: The 360 controller is an ideal size to many. Now, the old original Xbox controller's size was worth joking about, but not the 360's.
Whats wrong with the Wiimote? That lasts me yonks on rechargeable batterys.
@Citan359:
You know of decent PS3 titles you could play? Tell me!
I'd rather they not include rumble in their new controllers and focus on other things like videogames. Or at least make the "rumble" very strong and actually make it immersive in games. I didn't like the idea of having no rumble at first but after playing for a while i don't really care for it. I will care when they do another type of force feedback that makes you feel like you're getting slashed with a sword. that would be more immersive than anything else out there. lol
Oh please. When the PS3 had no rumble, the fanboys were all about defending Sony's 'sooooo last gen' commentaries. Now that Sony can legally do rumble and will, the fanboys are now all about rumble. Christ's sake people, pick a line and stick to it. Is rumble so last gen or is it something you know they should have had from the onset...
People don't miss rumble, please. Shooters, action games, hell the re-hash of PoP is awesome with rumble.
@silentknome: Um. I don't think the same people who are now working on hardware modifications would somehow be contributing to software applications if they weren't thusly preoccupied.
Looks like it'll be worth an investment. The PS3 controller is already good on its own. If it were to incorporate the 360s charge and play concepts, it'll be genius.
Many complain about the lack of rumble this might shut them up.
@Rhaedaw:
You know of decent wii titles you could play? Tell me!
ontopic: most ps2 games had it off on default, i would only notice the lack of rumble when i was adjusting options and the menu said 'vibration: off'. I hope they make rumble special again. Immersion was said to have some new haptics which would do more than vibrate like last gen ;)
@sakuraz:
That's true. And with the right attitude you can forgive anyone, no matter how badly they mistreat you.
@Kosher Infidel: Correction: when the PS3 had no rumble, ONE Sony exec (Phil Harrison) said that PERSONNALLY he thinks that rumble is last gen. The fans were angry with it at first but after a couple of games we missed it much less. Now that it will be available, everybody's happy.
@ridleysaria: So it costs $400 and you have to pay $200 for a HD DVD add-on, $100 for a Wi-fi adapter, AA batteries and $180 to upgrade your drive? The 360 is even better right?
@Kosher Infidel:
GET HIM!
I don't know any Sony fan that wouldn't MIND rumble, but honestly all people are saying is that they don't miss it as much as you'd think.
At first, it did feel a little dead in my hands. After an hour, you don't even notice.
That's not saying I won't upgrade when they come out, but come on, man. Let's leave the sweeping generalizations to your imaginary fanboys to use.
Rumble is nice, but the motion control of SIXAXIS (when used properly, not tacked on) is as nice as rumble. I like to think I am like many PS360 owners. I enjoy rumble when playing my 360 and don't miss it when playing my PS3. MotorStorm with motion control on is great. Do I yearn for rumble on my PS3? Nope. Would it be a nice addition? Of course.
@Kosher Infidel: you never miss a chance, eh?
cant wait to get rumble back, especially in time for MGS 4.
Im with McWhertor here: gimme a longer cord in this new one to charge the controller whilst i play, instead of like 2' from the system and we'll have no problems at all. hell, even if you dont, if it swings 15 hours of chage, im kool & the gang with that.
@Rhaedaw:
Obviously I'll mention the three: Resistance (Still fun BTW), Motorstorm, Oblivion (Yes, I know... year old...360... buts its fun and I didn't play it on 360, so woopie) But since rumble is coming out later this year(I guess), I was aiming toward future releases: Lair, Heavenly Sword, DLC, others (listing bores me).
@Kosher Infidel:
And I'm not trying to argue, but no...I really don't miss rumble... Hell, it should have been there, but defiantly wasn't a big hit for me. I was playing the 360 at my friends (playing Oblivion) and I really didn't even notice rumble at first, and when I did it added nothing... (for me anyway). GT, and maybe MGS are the only ones that come to mind for rumble, but I'll use a wheel for GT and Kojima is the best developer ever so he'll make something work without rumble anyway.
Sorry for any grammar error's didn't proof-read.
Personally I've never missed rumble on the PS3. The only game where I've ever really thought that it completely complemented the game was REZ and Space Channel 5, though it made SC5 a LOT less challenging.
For shooters its pretty much worthless as it doesn't really add to the experience as much as it should. If it were a linear feedback (i.e. recoil motion) though then I would be on the other side of the fence. The only place that traditional rumble (two offset weighted motors) really works is in driving games (mostly offroad) and air combat games, though the power in most motors doesn't really give as much feedback as you might like.
To be honest, the best rumble I've ever used is the N64 original rumble pack, which was really quite awesome with Starfox 64, though that could be just good memories!
The place I would personally love to see feedback motors would be in the new Namco G-Con 3 guns! Proper arcade style recoil in those things would be amazing!
@TheIrishNinja: Doesn't any old USB cord work? I recall reading that somewhere. In that case your charge cord could be as long as you want, though at slight extra cost.
I'd like it to be a little bigger, or switch the left stick and D-Pad. My thumbs are always bumping into each other.
I also think the current version is too light.

And, as anyone that has Zelda or Elebits can tell you, the Wiimote eats batteries. Pointing drains it quick. Thank god for rechargeables.
@slomo788:
Concerning that response you did @ridleysaria:
Slomo, for your own good, shutup. I'm all for PS3, but don't do that idiotic price thing, considering some people don't buy any of that... (well AA batteries, I guess)
And considering you have to buy an HDMI cable for PS3 if you do what Sony wants you to do.
If you wanna defend Sony, choose your battles, and think... (In short, Don't act like Sony.)
@Toasticus: $6.00 10ft. USB extension cable works fine
Is it that important for a person to be able to play continuously, so they don't need to let go of the controller to use the bathroom? Wireless is cool, but unless you require the person to do serious twisting and turning motions, just give it a cord and avoid battery life issues. Let's face it, AA batteries are really the only batteries feasible for a handheld controller; D and C batteries are heavy, making motion based controls like lifting weights. A good compromise would be a USB chargeable controller too, like with the 360.
@Toasticus: Ah yes...the hamburger controller. I liked to mess with my roommate and mime like I was eating it. While playing Halo. Deathmatch.
FUCKING YAYYYYYYYYY! :)
@MrFuzzypaws: Elebits didn't really drain the battery quickly for me, but Zelda definitely did. I blame it mostly on the in controller speaker though, more than the rumble feature.
oh, and if it even had 8 hours of battery life, that'd be acceptable, maybe even 6... that's not bad AT ALL, seeing as how you're probably not gaming for 6 hours straight....
8 should be fine. O_o
@onikuwagata: SIXAXIS is a USB chargeable controller
@TheIrishNinja:
The biggest reason I want rumble in my PS3 controller is actually to add a little weight to it. I hardly ever use the motion controls in Motorstorm or Warhawk because of it.
Not that they aren't good. They are very sensitive, fine tuned, all sorts of good stuff. But the controller is so light, it makes it to easy to over correct. I end up sweeping one way to hard and then turning way to far the other way to compensate.
With a little heft to it, I may have less of a struggle with it.
@Action-Bastard:
15 hours would suck. With as much as I play my PS3 right now, I have yet for a controller to even get into the halfway charge mark. I usually just use one controller and leave the other plugged in all the time. When one starts wearing down, I switch them out. And that only happens maybe once a month. That's DAMN good.
Not that I ever game for more than a couple hours anymore (I have a wife and kid, and they tend to get grumpy if Dad spends more than half an hour on,) but I would be greatly disappointed if my controllers started running down on the rare occasion I have folks over for a game party.
I think the limiting factor in battery life has to be the size. The 360 controller is shaped fairly large, but it's battery sits vertically along the middle where it's not noticed. They can add a decent sized battery pack there.
The Sixaxis has the battery horizontally between the hand grips, so there is only so much space in that bridge when you take into account all the buttons and motion sensors (that really HAVE to be in the middle.)
Why they can't put the battery in two seperate packs on either side in the handle, I don't know. They probably just want to even out the weight, so it's not tiresome to hold, but I WANT the weight...
Ok, pointless long rant done.
They should worry less about hardware improvement and focus on making the software keep up with what's already there, like making games that don't require split screen (like Calling all Cars) but can be played at 7 offline. That would appeal buyers, not rumble that can already be found in other consoles. There is plenty of things that the PS3 could do right now that can't be done elsewhere. Even the card readers can be used for gaming: Nintendo used the SD card for custom soundtracks in a their offroad game!
@slomo788: your a tool, you dont have to buy the hd dvd or the wifi thing
Ruble? who cares... key boards that glow for the up coming UT3 would be nice! Also too I must get a recharger pack for the Wii mote. rumble when used right call let you know stuff yet it's a nice add on. Man is this week going by slow!
@Toasticus:
Yeah, it's just a mini-USB to standard USB connection. I have a six foot cord and the one that came with the system.
Honestly, they didn't do anything bigger because from my understanding a USB connection actually begins to degrade over that 6' length.
Hopefully they go back to the boomerang design as well... that way they can completely go back on their word from a year ago!
@Citan359: Very funny that you are agreeing with me yet insulting me. You should think before posting man. It was a sarcasm to show him that no console comes with everything right out of the box. So if he wants to start complaining about upgrading the controller, he won't stop anytime soon. Hope you get it this time.
@PapaBear434: @Toasticus:
Never mind, that was an issue with USB 1.0. Not so much an issue with the new generation of USB (seeing as they sell ten to fifteen foot cables.)
@Kosher Infidel: Oh please. When the PS3 had no rumble, the fanboys were all about complaining and bemoaning its absence. Now that Sony can legally do rumble and will, the fanboys are now all saying they no longer miss it and it's not a big deal. Christ's sake people, pick a line and stick to it. Is rumble so last gen or is it something you know they should have had from the onset...
Whoops, I can play the game, too.
I find rumble very heplful in multiplayer shooters. When some one is shooting at my back, the slight reddish tinge that fills the corners of my screen doesn't really grab my attention. With rumble, if some one shoots at me, I know it.
The big question for me is: Will Ninja Gaiden Sigma and/or Devil May Cry 4 have rumble, and if not, can it be patched in? And yes, I know DMC4 is coming to the XBox360 as well.
Niiiiiiice. The controller could use a little more weight, and i'm not terribly worried about a battery life issue.
I'll admit i'm a ps2 fanboy, but i've been holding off on buying a PS3/360 until they've both had a fair chance to get themselves, games and features like online etc. to the market... The way it l
