King Of Fighters XII For US, Europe In 2009
You'd have thought this news was to be simply expected, not highlighted, but in these days of not-getting-SFIV-cabinets, you can't take anything for granted: Ignition Entertainment have today announced that they'll be publishing console versions of SNK's King of Fighters XII in the US and Europe. And that's about all they announced. No price, no intended platforms, not even a vague release window, though with it not due in Japanese arcades until next April, don't go expecting it too soon. Joining fellow SNK character Iroha from Samurai Shodown, Mai Shiranui is the latest game female to appear in the Queen's Gate art books. Fully licensed by SNK, the book is illustrated by Mahiru Izumi. Queen's Gate is a spin-off of Queen's Blade, which is a Lost Worlds style "combat picture book game."

Booth Showcase: SNK Is The King Of Fighters, Boobs
We close out our TGS booth tours with SNK’s. Thanks for stickin' around. It was both larger and more impressive than last year’s mild effort, thanks in most part to the presence of an row of eight playable King of Fighters XII arcade cabinets. Oh, and two 60” LCD’s showcasing that action, helping make it easily the most visually impressive game of the show. The rest of the stuff in their booth (ie anything not King of Fighters) was standard SNK fare: boobs, more boobs and mouse pads with boobs on them.

How Are The King of Fighters XII Cabinets Linked?
In Western arcades, the 1player and 2player joysticks are typically side-by-side for fighting games, and in Japanese arcades, the sticks are only side-by-side for co-op play. Fighting games traditionally have cabinets placed back to back in rows so that you cannot see the player you are fighting — that is, unless you actually look over the cabinet. Bad manners! Regarding how the cabinets are linked, Street Fighter IV is hardly traditional.

Here, Another Gorgeous King Of Fighters XII Trailer
And this one's not some shaky cam one, either. It's a proper one. A long, proper one, that shows off better than any before the hundreds of frames of animation that have been poured into each character. -

SNK Talk KOFXII's Gorgeous, Gorgeous Graphics
You know one of the key differences between product and art? It's in the craftsmanship. Lots of people can churn out a 3D model of an alien, few can hand-draw and then animate lush, vibrant, 2D sprites. So those that can, we treasure. And we treasure SNK! Speaking yesterday at the Tokyo Amusement Show, King Of Fighters XII producer Masaaki Kukino spoke at length about not just their upcoming fighter, but its "traditional" graphics:
Overall, it's a very hard process that could take 16 months for even an experienced designer to do alone. In terms of data, the character size is about four times larger [than in previous installments]. But when considering the extra errors that come about in doing the [bigger] pixel art, the trouble is more than four times what it used to be.
Each character in KOFXII has around 400 to 600 [sprite] patterns. Every single one of them is hand-drawn, and it's something that we're proud of. I'll only say it here, but we believe that this is something that no other company can imitate, something that only SNK Playmore can do.
Amazing.
