Quake Wars Beta Goes Live*

* Sort of. FilePlanet subscribers were treated to an early look at the tactical first-person shooter Enemy Territory: Quake Wars last night, as Splash Damage opened up the public beta for a very limited sneak peek. According to the ETWQ community manager, this small subset of PC gamers given beta keys will not count against the previously mentioned 60,000 public beta slots. The demo is expected to be opened to a much wider audience later this week.

As previously stated, you need not be a FilePlanet subscriber to take part in the public beta. However, if you're desperate to join and want to ensure that you're one of the lucky 60,000 a membership will certainly help your chances.

  • Whoa.. the thing at the top says 0 views for me!

  • Even after a refresh!

Anyways, this headline made me jump out of my pants. Till I clicked on it. :(

  • was playing it earlier. Enjoying it so far havent gotten a chance to really get in a long game yet though.

  • yeah me and a buddy picked up a monthly subscription for fileplanet just to try this game out.

    We'll see.

This isn't a critique of Quake Wars in particular, but... FPS games seem to get gloomier and gloomier looking these days.

  • I sent this to Kotaku tips already but anyone with an old computer like myself that wants to play this, might want to lie about your system specs. I put my real specs, geforce 5900, athlon 2800, 1.5g ram, and DSL, and basically my fileplanet account was locked out from the beta (despite the minimum requirements being well below my specs).

Fortunately a second account should solve that problem, though it really irritates me that they'd do this (same thing happened with Fury). Wondering why, I'm guessing they don't want people knowing the game won't run well or look good if you don't have the recommended requirements. I don't think I should have to buy the game to find that out, though.

  • Oh and I wonder if subscribers can be locked out as well if they don't meet the requirements...

  • The beta is ok.. its nothing spectacular. Just another UT styl run and gun. Graphics are subpar for todays standards. But I guess its enjoyable, but I have to say it... OVERHYPED.

  • Don't believe the above poster. This game is an absolute blast to play.

It's very Battlefield 2142, but without the slow tactical play.

    It's totally worth trying out.

  • @Chunkylover21:

"The beta is ok.. its nothing spectacular. Just another UT styl run and gun. Graphics are subpar for todays standards."

That's probably just the in-game ads ruining your experience by making the game have average graphics and gameplay.

  • In case you're getting your details here.

Beta started today with initial keys being sent to Fileplanet subscribers only.

Keys are shared 50/50. So registered users without subscriptions to fileplanet will have the chance to get once of 30,000 beta keys too. Last I heard this was going to happen on Saturday but I'd check each day if you want one.

    Website to check is here.

  • I got a key, downloaded it and... CRC error. I've now received two of these on 2 different betas! (Quake Wars and Tabula Rasa) and can not play either game :(

  • wutever i refuse to even download the beta cuz of ads that i havent seen yet splash damage just lost a customer =:[=:[=:[

  • I'm downloading now!

  • F- for ads.
    F- for Fileplanet.

  • @Heihachi.vs.Kazuya: So it has ads hell I don't even look at quake 3 textures any more...LOL Come on spare me the BS and come on in and get your ass kicked! Should be fun though. I'll be the one rolling tanks over cliffs...LOL

  • @Toasticus:

Well, aliens are overtaking earth and turning deed humans into walking meat puppets. I say the art direction fits the story here. Team Fortress is very bright and cartoonish -- it's more like a game of basketball than an FPS in that sense.

    @Chunkylover21:

Did you really play it? It's not anything like UT, since it's an objectives/jobs based strategy FPS -- run and gun gets nothing done. Either you never played this beta or the previous ET or you'd understand. If you did play and couldn't figure it out go back to halo please. I can't stand people joining a server that don't have a clue how a team based game works.

  • Whats the big deal, the ads are supposedly tasteful. If it means better support and additions later on, I'm all for it. As long as they don't charge like Oblivion, and don't put adds for, say, mascara on the side of a Strogg ship.

  • @cametall: I'll let you know how it goes. I'll be running this off my test box. It has a coreduo with about 4 gigs of ram in it well 3668460 ks all powered by an old 7950 since this is a direct x 9 game really. Almost finished!

  • @Chunkylover21:

    You're comparing this to UT?

I seriously doubt you played this, friend. It is NOTHING like UT.

  • I absolutely love it. You really need to be playing with a competant team to make it enjoyable though, as you can't in without everyone doing their job.

  • In game ads = this game is dead to me. No f'ing way will I ever knowingly play a game with in game ads.

  • Meh I got the beta yesterday as part of the sneak peak deal.

    It is indeed amazing. :p

  • Eventually every game with a billion dollar plus a year publisher is going to do anything and everything they can to get the dollars out of our wallets, and into their pockets, I say, until everybody boycotts, and nobody buys a game with ads, they're here for good. Remember that basic cable didn't have ads, until they realized that people would still watch and they'd make a ton more money.

  • the funny thing about the ppl complaing about ads is this. Either they didnt ad them yet or they are so well done that you dont even notice. Cause i havent seen one ad yet. Honestly though the game gets so hectic i hardly think i'll ever even stop to pay attention to the ads. So those who are not going to get it because of ads your the ones missing out not us.

  • This is fuckingquake and your not gonna play it because of a few barely noticable ads. your fuckin nuts! And yea it isn't anything like ut.

  • Well i got into beta and canceled my pre-order a few hours later, didnt live up to the hype for me.

  • Sweet sweet game... Please do your self a favor and read up on how to play it other wise this is way better than UT. Those guys have alot of work to do. This is the best my GPU has looked in a long time... really the game runs fast too! Now how come quake 4 sucked!

Also too in game adds my ass there is so much info on screen you got time to read only what you need. I'll be getting the honey moon over this week end to dig deeper into this one but so far I likes!

  • @Gwog:

I'll bet you'll park your ass in a movie theater, in front of your TV plus countless other places where we're inundated with ads day in and day out but you won't bat an eye. A few stupid billboards in-game and its "oh no way, nuh-uh, for-get it!"

does that really make sense to you?

  • Well I played it for about an hour, and I was thoroughly unimpressed. This game was on my must buy list, but now I just don't know. It looks and plays like a 4 year old game. Pretty disappointing.

It's like a chick that looks hot from far away, but then as you get closer to her you notice she's 35 years old and has a C-section scar on her midriff and big, dark bags under her eyes.

  • @z0mbi: LOL did you expect rocket jumps...LOL They are not here... It's like socom quake and UT al together and no one knows how to play it yet...LOL Where is the damn flag! Just playing... The graphics where sweet though and the speed was there for some reason I was expecting jerky movements? I'm still wondering why we got no out door quake 4 maps?

  • @Runna: its good to see someone else talking about the speed. Thats what i loved about RTCW and ET. It was the perfect speed for me. Not to fast like Q3 arena but not as slow as something like Medal of Honor. As far as this game goes the only thing i wanted was for them to match the feel of ET and add some things, and honestly i think they nailed it right on the money. I was planning on upgrading my pc or buying a 360 and this sealed my decision. Pc upgrade ftw.

  • Would someone care to put up a direct first-hand comparison to Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory (the prequel to this, and much cheaper)

  • They've said that the Adds will help pay for support and future development. That's just fine with me whatever it takes for them to continue support without me having to pay more.

I'm finding the objective based play more fun than the point capture style of BF. It focuses everyone on a one area. I also like the side objective.

Now I just have to wait for the Tribes mod to come out.

  • @Chunkylover21: I am with him. I have been in the closed beta for 3 months now. I was VERY excited for this game and enjoyed it in the beginning.

The problem is that it gets old very very quick. Once people get used to the game, it gets worse. Instead of gun battles like it should be, it becomes a gadget war. You can't turn a corner without throwing a grenade before because you can be sure there is like 10 mines waiting for you. The artillery is over used. Too much deployables, they are easy to destroy though, but all you seem to do is to destroy them.

The vehicles controls like uber shit. There are not responsive at all and mostly useless. A tank can be mowed down by the assault rifle/lacerator. They don't have any armor at all. Same for the flyers, 2 person focusing fire on the chopper takes it down in 10 seconds..

The interface is the worst I have seen in a fps so far. Not only it is ugly and that it covers half the screen, it does not help much.

The nailgun/shotgun is useless. You are better off using the automatics. The rocket launchers acts like bf2/bf2142 rocket lauchers, you have to lock on the target. The sniper and railgun are 1 shot kill weapons. The railgun can not be used like in the original quake series. If you don't use the scope, it is very innacurate.

In order to be competitive you have to kill yourself to get replenished. There don't encourage staying alive at all.

It went from a must buy to a no buy at all for me. I will wait for TF2 and Unreal Tournament 3.

  • W:ET is one of my favorite FPS' so i'm really looking forward to this game.. i'll wait until i can get into the public non-pay beta to make my own judgements. i have high hopes.

  • I'm so glad so many people are coming to their senses and realizing the truth about in-game ads: they don't mean a damn thing.

  • @skobar: I've been playing it since last night and the level lay out leaves me with a lot to do. I like how when you go indoors it feels alot like quake and I know since I play it every day. The tanks are the best they can actually climb stuff and when used right they are just mowed down. People hated the Ut tanks because it would take years to take it down.

This game is about know what the game offers... I mean you will see trip mines , snipers with all the tooks they need and the mega textures work as you simply down sit on repeating texture and pop out like a smoke signal.

I'm having fun really and the art is great. A really sweet mix of next gen graphics, sci fi and realism. The map could be huge though and I'm sure they will have to put the main bases out a little farther as a good then will crush you.

I'm liking every thing about this one though. You really should go to a good server and at least spec people. This game has a lot of meat to it and it will only get old if you don't look deeper. I could easily play this map just like the old Q3 demo for months and have fun. I mean come on the in viechicle copits actual have work useful dash boards! You can see who many you are carrying and what weapon you have along with your speed!

Also too they got the deployables just right as there are plenty and you hardly ever have to do the UT hop across the land scape. These maps really are well designed though. Almost every problem I had with quake 4 and UT(last year) are fixed in this game. there are a lot of play styles in this game also so if you are getting bored then you should try another style.

This game is easily on my must buy list and the weekly week end play list from now on! This is hard core FPS done right. I just hope the UT guys are playing this and realise some half assed stuff they did was not cool and actualy ruined there game.

Also too the Hud is very informative and you WILL need all of the info and also to you CAN change your view and I'm sure you can just take the hud out with the console... This game kicks ass really... this Crysis and UT3 with any thing ID throws at us is exactly what I wanted from HD gaming and not have games this well planned is the reason why I still don't have a HD console. You will need a keyboard for this one!

  • I like how a ton of guys flamed me, and now after more and more have tried the beta, others are agreeing with me. I played the damn beta Im not fucking lying. I seriously was expecting more. It is not that impressive. I have played it for several hours, yes it has team oriented objectives but it still does feel like UT to me. Ill say it again, overhyped. I probably wont buy it.

  • Did anyone else have problems signing up? My specs surpassed what it says it needed, and everytime I'd hit enter it would say "your pc is not able to run Quake Wars." I'm running a 3.2 GHz Nvidea 7950gx2 (1 gig of video memory) and I have 4 gigs of RAM. Just to see if it would work, I maxed the system out according to their settings...and it kept saying I was unable to sign up. Now the beta is closed and I'm a little disappointed.

  • Yeah, it turned out to be kinda disappointing. 24 player cap PC, 16 player cap console. Numerous inconsistencies in design that make for frustration. It's like they took UT's Assault mode, jazzed up the graphics, removed some players and called it a game.

Perhaps they should call it Quake Skirmish?
