The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences gave the PLAYSTATION 3's Sixaxis controller the Technology and Engineering Emmy Award. Previously, Microsoft and Atari picked up Emmy Awards. Sony's Jack Tretton said:
The overwhelming consumer demand and critical acclaim for PS3 is testament of the platform's strength and the industry's desire for a true next-generation entertainment system. The full potential of this powerful machine has yet to be realized. What you've seen so far is just a taste of what will be on the table for 2007 and years to come.
And no, none of that "full potential" will rumble.
Sixaxis Gets Emmy [Games Industry]

This is a joke right?, no vibration, and the wiimote has better detection in every angle possible, and a pointing device...
With the sixaxis all you can do is steer it like a wheel...
I guess this is actually a joke.

Man, that sounds so freaking fake..... i tried to not be bias and read this carefully but.....
How the hell does the SIXAXIS get the award and the Wii remote doesn't? The Wii remote + nunchuk combo has twice as many accelerometers and the pointer functionality.
Jeez, and I thought Patricia Arquette winning best actress was a travesty of an award.
yea, what Zeal said....
Wait, why? The controller that changed THE LEAST of all the next-gen controllers wins in award?
Either that was paid off, or the people that made that decison were nearly retarded.
And the Wii Remote has rumble.
The 360 controller got painted white and two buttons moved. That appears to be less of a change than the SIXAXIS.
Grats sony!
Deserving or not in the console space, you gotta admit... SIXAXIS winning an Emmy is way more justified than most people in Hollywood winning Emmys.
Heh Kotaku is going to crash trying to process all the Sony hate over that last couple of days alone!
There is no way someone didn't exchance large sums of money for that bull. It's the crappiest controller of all 3 by far.
"And the Wii Remote has rumble."
And a speaker!
Att: Those who have played the PS3....
I held a Dual Shock, and tried moving it around in the air, twisting and turning...I found the way my wrists when holding the Dual Shock to make it very uncomfortable. Has anyone encountered this?
As a 360 owner, how the hell does the Wii remote not win?
""And the Wii Remote has rumble."
And a speaker!"
And complete FREEDOM, not just six axis.... which is lame...
Actually, this would be right in line for awards like the Emmys, Grammys, etc, which are notoriously out-of-date and out-of-touch. Bet money that hardly any of the voters play games, and so they vote for what they have heard of in the media. Plus, given the time frame of the voting, it probably took place right around the time that all the PS3 shootings etc were making headlines. Take that as an indication of how out-of-touch these awards are.
PS- anyone know why there should be an Emmy for the best videogame controller? Is that a new category?
Wow, who'd have thought something could make the Spike TV video game awards look like a class act?
As an anti-sony fan...
"How does the Wii-mote NOT win?!"
lol
Plus I love the shrill bullshit of "The overwhelming consumer demand and critical acclaim for PS3 is testament of the platform's strength and the industry's desire for a true next-generation entertainment system." Are they still spouting that xbox1.5 bullshit? Didn't they get served at launch?
This is no real surprise. Maybe the Wiimote is more inventive seeming, but you still need to hook up a sensor bar on top of or below your tv. The motion sensing in the ps3 is contained within the console itself and the controller. From an engineering perspective, the Sixaxis is a better built controller.
But I guess now we have to sit through the slew of people accusing Sony of buying the award, and reminding us constantly that ITS ALL ABOUT TEH FUN!!!

I'm at a loss of words, really.
Let's see your Wii-mote cook waffles. Bring it!
"I'd like to thank the Academy, god of course, and all those poor saps that still bought the ps3 after all the problems, recalls and utter lack of supply..."
What a fucking Joke...

well when exactly will this "full potential" be realized? i feel like they'll be spewing this garbage well into 2008 as well. only then it'll be "fully realized" that sony's full of shit. put up or shut up, the only ones buying this must be sony stockholders, coz as far as i understand, there are plenty of ps3s sitting around, waiting for a good home. i'll think about picking one up when they're $300 and actually have something that can't be ignored.
and yea, i can't believe the sixaxis got this award over the wii. fucking pathetic.
"From an engineering perspective, the Sixaxis is a better built controller."
My understanding is that the wixaxis controller does not match the functionaility of the wii-mote. It does not have spacial location recognition, which the sensor bar of the wii-mote allows. I could be wrong about this, but the sixaxis controller couldn't be used as a pointer, correct?
The sixaxis motion controls seems to just be a cheap rip off of the wii's.
i guess the no clue award goes to ninjaball
What? The sixaxis is a controller that has been around for 10 years with some motion controll built in that is ripped off from one of their main competitors. I can not believe this...
an award for the SUXAXXIS?
oh my god... i changed my mind, let me take the blue pill!!! please!
i guess the no clue award goes to ninjaball
I'll tell you how the Wii Remote doesn't win: batteries.
But yeah, this is a little silly. Its clearly a more interesting/innovative input device, and way more popular at the moment.
Kotaku, stop with the 'will never have rumble', that's absurd. The PS1 didn't have rumble when it shipped and of course they added it later. Its a USB plug, they can do whatever goofy controllers they want. Including Wii Remote ripoffs.
To NinjaBall and others:
The Wii remote does not require the sensor bar for anything but pointing at the screen. All of the other functions in terms of motion sensing, speaker output, and Mii storage are done via bluetooth.
dowingba says:
The 360 controller got painted white and two buttons moved. That appears to be less of a change than the SIXAXIS.
360 controller differences.
-different, better shape. One of the most comfortable controllers ever
-guide button
-like you said, the black and white buttons got turned into shoulder buttons
-wireless built into them.
ps3 controller differences.
-guide button (wow, monkey see, monkey do)
-wireless built into them.
-accelerometers(see above sarcastic comment)
besides adding the wireless, all sony did was copy other companies; which they probabley saw nintendo or microsoft doing already.
You know, I'm going to make a movie. It is going to break every box office record and win every award. It will be called brave titanic mountain. It will feature a rag-tag group of Scottish men who are outkast from society on their boat that crashes into a mountain, and they have to win their freedom as they attempt to survive and have to eat each other to live, like in that other movie with that sports team that crashes in the mountains. It will win so many awards. Now... for the millions of dollars needed to fund it. Sony likes sinking ships. : )
@ NinjaBall
The sixaxis doesn't need a sensor bar because it doesn't have the features that require it. If the Wii remote were just as bad, it wouldn't need a sensor bar either.
Can someone award this to the Sidewinder Freestyle pro for doing it 10 years ago please... =)
But seriously, how could this not go to the Wii Remote?
From an engineering perspective, the Sixaxis is a better built controller.
Better built than the Wiimote because it has less functionality and expandability? Imagine that. Less is more I guess.
Jack Tretton's statement makes me laugh. He should read gaming sites (crawling out of his rock would be a great first step) and see all the PS3's that haven't been sold before he harps on about exceptional demand. There's a difference between desiring a PS3 but not paying $600 for it, and demanding it with the will of paying $600 for it. A lot of people want one, but they sure-as-hell aren't gonna pay $600 for one, so to say it has a lot of immediate demand is pure rubbish.
To be completely honest with you, there should be a "Tretton-filter" installed on the interweb, because I've never for the life of me read anything written or said by him which is meaningful in any way whatsoever and I can't really see things getting better either. At the very least he could learn to master rhetoric like Krazy Ken Kutaragi has.
Can't you guys get your heads out of your ass for one post?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Those Emmy people, they know how to tell a good joke! Surely the Wii won for being innovative and having "overwhelming consumer demand and critical acclaim"? Or did Sony just pay for their award?
Doesn't it also randomly disconnect from the PS3? Some feat of engineering.
Comedy Gold!
So they went from Flogs to just paying for reviews now?
The motion sensing in the ps3 is contained within the console itself and the controller. From an engineering perspective, the Sixaxis is a better built controller.
All of the devices that allow the wiimote to do what the SIXAXIS does aren't contained within the wiimote as well, its accelerometers and gyroscopes don't need the sensor bar in anyway.
The 360 controller is by far the best conventional controller out there, if it only it had a better d-pad though, I hate the kind where its too hard to just push straight left right up or down every time.
The SIXAXIS isn't a "best of both worlds" product in my eyes. I'm not by any means saying that its not a good controller though.
The Wiimote doesn'r have neough software out there yet to really get a good feel, so far its seems that some games are trying to use too many buttons, and it can be awkward to reach lots of the buttons that aren't meant to be hit a lot. In time developers will hopefully figure out how to develop games for the Wii and more specifically develop games for the wiimote.
stevemkrenz, Sony added SIX axises to their SIXAXIS. They even possibly had to invent dimensions in space in order to accomodate for it.
Ninjaball, the only thing the sensor bar does is help in pointing at the screen. All motion controls for the Wii operate independent of the pointing of the console. You could swing your sword in Zelda all day long without the pointer. The sensor bar would be a required thing even if it was available on the PS3 as well. Unless you provide a reference field for the display (ie a sensor bar) then the console can't tell what motion would attribute to a location on screen.
Way to improve tthe Wiimote? Make it smaller. THere's no reason for it to be as long as it is...there's alot of wasted space that has no purpose except to make it harder to reach buttons (1 and 2, specifically). I'd even vote for them to get rid of that stupid speaker. There's half-an-inch right there.
Considering that the award is for "Technology and Engineering", I wouldn't expect the Wii/Wii Remote to win, but for SIXAXIS to win is just silly.
@snazzynick
bite me.
and for posting it twice...
bite me.
"invert dimensions in space"
lol love it.
"This is no real surprise. Maybe the Wiimote is more inventive seeming, but you still need to hook up a sensor bar on top of or below your tv. You have to sync the ps3 to any system you want to play it on. And Sony ripped the idea from N because they didn't want to pay Immersion. And please explain the "better built" part. That makes no sense.
NinjabBall:
??? Really? Maybe more traditional. And that motion sensing is the controller, not the console, although ditto for the wiimote. The Six has more in common with the Nunchuk to my understanding.
As far as engineering, lets start chucking those sixaxis controllers into HD-Tv's, ceiling fans and walls as hard as we can so I can really see which controller is better engineered!
I'd even vote for them to get rid of that stupid speaker.
The speaker is actually required for some games. Not many at this point in time, but both Red Steel and Rayman Raving Rabbids require the speaker. And at least with Red Steel this functionality can't just be moved to the TV's speakers.
Don't get me wrong, the Wii-mote is a marvel, and I understand why people think it should have won.
Bah, who am I kidding...I can't win this argument. I'm just gonna stop there.
I can understand the console hardware winning an award but the controller? No.
Congrats Sony!
You have got to be fucking kidding me. A television award claiming a mediocre combination of other people's ideas as innovative? Is this an Onion article? How can they possibly say the Wii remote is less innovative than the PS3 controller? That is probably the most inane bullshit I have ever heard of. Someone made a lot of money of this tripe. Oh well, c'est la vie!
