Not having been to New York myself, I can't vouch for this project's authenticity. What I can vouch for, though, is its dedication.
"The New York City Journals" follows the development of a mod which is looking to replicate New York within SimCity 4. And in frightening detail. They're not out to just stick a few landmarks onto a terrain base that looks kinda like New York. Oh no, they're recreating the entire city on a street-by-street, borough-by-borough basis.
The cabs are real, the prisons are real, Central Park is real, even the water treatment plants are being faithfully represented. They even ran a Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade through its tiny little streets.
This is what a model train set or Lego-land would look like if God built it.
