Bashcraft's 360 Finally Dies (How's Yours?)

The exciting and inevitable conclusion to the my-Xbox-360-starting-freezing post! On Saturday night, after playing the BioShock demo to death, I decided to fire up some Gears of War. I played for ten minutes and then it moved on from this world, leaving Red Rings of Death as a memento. To recap: I got the "checkerboard effect," and the next time I switched on a disc-based game, the box konked out. So Xbox Live Arcade games and free demos could be the answer to Microsoft's hardware woes! Or something.

Now, that my Xbox 360 has cashed in, that means that at least three of all Kotaku editors have reached RROD status. Yay! Mine was a Japan Launch 360 (which I waited in line for and purchased with my own money). What about you reader people? Time for a poll: What I want to know is whether you've had hardware problems or not. We've got a decent sized readership, so I'm keen to know stories out in the field. More importantly, I really want to know if you've had not problems. Not all Xbox 360s are heaps of junk. Some of them actually work! So, if you've got worker, let us know in the comments section.

Meanwhile, I gotta send this thing off to get it repaired.

Eds Note: I just called consumer support, and they said it was going to be 2 or 3 weeks before they could fix it. The rep I spoke with said things were "backed up."

  • Got my 360 around the time Oblivion came out, and I've never had a single problem with it.

    Guess I'm just lucky?

  • I feel for you. Mine may be one of the few that went back to MS for a non 3 red rings problem. First one had a LOUD buzzing coming from the dvd drive. It got so bad and so loud I had to play at extremely high volume. MS took it back, and sent me a replacement, which promptly exhibited the same problem. Turns out they just sent it back without fixing it.

So I sent it again, and this time they sent me a replacement, which worked fine for 3-4 months, but has begun doing the same thing you described: freezing after extensive disk play. It's only a matter of time before I get red ringed I'd imagine.

My 360's only about a month old, but no problems so far outside of a single freeze-up. (which is a given issue with any console)

  • On my fourth. The last one died just as the Bioshock demo dropped.

I think I've been pretty unlucky.

  • US Launch 360. Still works like a charm.

Good luck on getting yours back in a timely manner. Hopefully you have other means of getting your Bioshock on.

  • Still on the first.

  • ♫RRODLMNOP,
time for Ashcraft to play his Wii♫

Oh well, look on the bright side... umm... I guess you can't play Bioshock... That's a bright side.

    How?

Well, I hear it's kind of addicting and oh so fun... I'm sure that's bad somehow...

  • bought mine at launch. I had a couple of freezes with a few launch games in the first month, but it's been smooth sailing since then.

  • 3 red rings of death in 18 months and my latest 360 seems to be scratching my discs. I think its karma for all the microsoft software I've pirated over the years.

Still waiting on #4. Been almost two weeks.

My 360 Elite never crashes and I've never had the red rings on it.

I think you need that A LOT Mr. Bashcraft.

  • me i just got my 2nd repair 360 a couple weeks ago... I only hope that mine can last through Halo 3 and Rock Band cause I plan on playing those games alot...

  • I bought mine mid-August of 2006, and it lasted until the end of July this year. Just got it back from the MS repair center.

While plugging it in and running it, I accidentally half-kicked the power box, and it went back to red ringing for a while >.> But just as I was about to call MS and bitch at them it started working again, and I haven't had any problems again... yet.

  • On my third. :(

I made an opera about the red ring of death which Kotaku was nice enough to feature a while back. I feel obligated to re-post for all of my fallen comrades...

  • My 360 was a launch baby and is still working when I first got it. I played the hell out of it when doa4 came out.

  • welcome to the club! better get a book. Turn around is usually 4-6 weeks =P

  • Funny mine died tonight after playing bioshock for a couple of hours,it crashed with the checkboard effect and now wont switch on anymore (red rings)

  • Im on my second. My first one crapped out just after they anounced the new one year warenty and I had exactly one week left on that.

  • Well i think mine is about to die soon. It's been sounding much louder when it starts up and when it starts a game. My game is like a hot tortilla off the oven when i pull the game out after about an hour of play. I hope it last long enough so that when the 65 chips come out i can walk into BB and trade it in with my warranty or if not to MS!

  • Mine's only six months old, but I haven't had a problem yet.

I'm currently considering whether to get the extended warranty. It seems like most of the boxes end up getting the RRoD (which is covered for three years), but I'd hate to skip on the extended warranty, then end up with one of the other miscellaneous issues that can lead to 360 death.

  • i waited to get my cousin one in the fabled second shipment to bestbuy in december of 06. Now, its frozen a couple of times playing most wanted and gears, but this box has been a trooper. now, I'm not the biggest fan of the 360 but my cousin's 360 has withstood some abuse, falling down on the floor, poor ventilation, constant movement during gameplay ...
my verdict, his onsole was built like a tank, and the other 360 (friend who was in line with me) that was gotten at the same time is also running like a champ.

  • I'm on my 3rd. 1st had a disc try start crapping out, 2nd was the RROD & my 3rd & current one is going good so far, but the drive has started making funny noises and it's not reading the discs some of the times.. So I dunno :/ but my other friends have 360's that work fine so far.

  • On my second. The first was a launch console I got in November of 2005. It crapped out a week before Oblivion launched. I was not happy.

  • Got mine in April/May 2006. No problem so far.

  • my first 360 lasted me about 15 months. it started acting up around e3 time. right after the e3 MS keynote speech, i decided to go online to see what was new that was talked about during the speech- and of course...the irony...i get the red lights as soon as i turn it on...

long story short, i bought it from costco so i went in the following day and returned it for a brand new system...i pull this new one out of the box and hook it up and get the red lights on first boot up of the system...lovely...so again returned that one and took the cash to buy an elite...all is well for now...

  • I'm one year in, and on my 3rd 360.

Though, my last fix was in May, right around the time of the additional heatsinks being added. I haven't checked to see if I have them, but so far so good with number 3.

Last time mine was repaired I got a free month of live and PGR3.

  • I got mine at launch in Sydney, it's still good. Although if it does decide to die on me, I won't be surprised.

  • Mine was a launch unit, everything was fine, then one day i played the tenchu demo, and next thing I know, the red lights. I did the towel trick and revived it a few times, but I gave up. I sent it off to microsoft and they shipped me a brand new unit about 1 month ago, and all is well so far.

  • My 360 died awhile back. I decided to fix it by removing the x-clamps which brought my 360 back to life. But the next day Microsoft said they were extending the warranty. I was very pissed off.

  • I bought my 360 console at Launch, and it survived from Nov 2005 upto the end of April 2007, when the checkerboard effect popped up whilst playing Guitar Hero 2.

It was always well ventilated, never near any heat, never moved since it was placed down on my glass until in Nov 2005, but it did die.

I rang MS up, and they wanted to charge me 75 pounds for it to be repaired because I was out of warrenty.

I told them stick it up there ass, and I found someone on Ebay who fixed it for 30 quid and turned the fan up on my 360 to keep the chip cool.

It sounds like an aeroplane, but when you've got the 360 hooked up to your Digital 7.1 amp, you don't hear the fan at all!!

Then it pissed me off when Peter Moore announced that old boxes get a 3 year warrenty. Problem for me is that it was opened by someone else, and because of that, the warrenty is void.

Thanks MS for screwing me over!!!

  • I've had mine since January of 2006, and apart from a few temporary freezes (none recently), have had no problems.

  • I'm on my second one, but as I dropped the first right when I took it out of the box, I don't think that counts for anything(except that I was pretty stupid). The other one , though, has been up and running flawlessly for 7 months now.

  • Got mine on launch day and I have had no problems with it.

  • My girlfriends brothers PS3 has been conking out. Not sure why, but it'll freeze up occasionally and once whilst playing resistance it froze and displayed some weird dev code or something in the top left of the screen.

  • sorry to hear that, its shit timing.
funny, i was just re-reading through the thread a few weeks back about the new HDMI premiums, seeing how the disc tray thing went, and reading that guy on the x-box forums talking about the falcon needing time in QC, i honestly hope its all crap and its sorted by the holidays. If Mass Effect does what its looking to do, between that and Bioshock, i dont think ill be able to hold out much longer.

  • I don't own one yet but my cousin had one start to go on him. He rented dead rising and within the first 10 minutes it froze. Ok no big deal restart. 5 minutes later it froze. Now this looks serious. Try again. 2 minutes in it freezes. Must be a defective disk so let's just play CoD 2 (Which never had a problem before). Freeze... Great. The room was not hot or anything. The 360 however was extremely hot. I don't think any of his other games required all 3 cores like dead rising.

He took it back to EB and got a new one. It seems to work fine. Played the rental copy of dead rising just fine for hours. Also his original was an Oct 2005 made console. Go figure.

  • *knocks on wood*

working fine since I got in in November 06

  • I've had mine since February of 2006, and it still runs perfectly sans a few crashes in Oblivion a while ago. Though I suspect that those were more because of Oblivion than the 360. I guess I'm one of the lucky few. I just hope it can survive the deluge of awesome titles coming this fall.

  • I've had one since Jan or Feb 06 and its still running. Only problems i've had is a few lock ups (most happened during FIFA 07 for some reason).

  • I've had mine since launch(Nov. 22, 2005) and I've never had a problem other than the occasional freeze in Oblivion.(knock on wood) I play an average of 4 hours a day. I use the pelican air flow stand with my system. Maybe this has had something to do with my long lasting console.

I've had 3 break. My 4th (which worked) I sold. Technically, I have had 6 break, as 3 in a row were broken out of the box -- but I don't count those as I think it was a bad batch Best Buy got at the time and the replacement warranty covered it, as they all broke within the first 30 days. My 4th (the one I sold), has lasted the longest and is now something like 6 months old. I just hope this new one doesn't crap out on me before I finish Bioshock. Over at Ben Heck's page he put up a pic I took of my new HDMI 360 that shows the new heatsink, pipe, etc. Hopefully that helps. But I don't like the "fart" noise the thing makes when it turns on or when I put in or take out a disc.

I've had mine since November when Fry's was selling premiums with 3 games (Saint's Row, Dead Rising, TDU) and it's worked perfectly.

  • Dtaed Jan 3

I spent about 30 minutes with Microsoft's CS yesterday. Having dealt with Sony's CS 2 times they have always treated me in a professional way and with courtesy. Microsoft, besides the fact it sounded like she was talking through a paper bag, was condescending and accusatory in that the issues my 360 had were my fault or is supposed to be that way. A CD in the drive sounds like a darn jet and she quotes me a reader card response about the 360 being advanced hardware and other such BS PR crap. The circle scratched into my Lego's Star Wars II game is because I must have moved the 360 with the game in the drive or the unit is vibrating, not caused by the unit, from some other source. Oh and it was stressed several times, even though I did not imply or ask about, that Microsoft is not responsible for damaged disks.
She suggested that if the problem continues to give them a call back.

So let me get this straight!!!! They want me to continue to use a unit that is defective and to ruin a second $60 game just to prove the unit is defective but they won't do anything about the $120+tax that I will be out in trashed games??

    Dated Jul 17

called back today and spoke to Terry. At first they had this complaint. I followed up with them to state that the game (Star Wars II lego's) now has another scratch and several partial scratches. They said they could fix it but it would be $99. I stated that I reported this issue prior the the warranty expiring. They said yes but since I am calling back now it is out of warranty. I said that I reported this issue while still under warranty and they said yes but now it is out of warranty and you are reporting it now. I said so I have to pay $100? and she said not that much. (side note: how GD condescending) She went to get a supervisor and when she came back she said that they said it would cost $99. After going back and forth and allot of time on the phone I said fine. thanked her for her time and hung up.
I called MS corporate office and was advised to insist to speak to a supervisor at customer service. I called back and spoke to some guy and explained everything. He said he would get a supervisor. After over 30 minutes a young lady came on and she didn't know anything and was not a supervisor so i had to explain everything again! She said that since I was calling now I had to pay. I said I wanted to speak to a supervisor. She put me on hold for a couple of minutes and when she came back she connect a supervisor name Jenno. I told him I reported this issue before back in January. He said the only thing I see is a complaint about a headset. Hmmm looks like they lost my original complaint. How convenient. Long story short they say I have to pay even though I reported the problem while still in warranty.

  • When I got Dead Rising that is when i first started having problems with my 360. It kept on saying i needed to check the disc, and so that has continued with games like Oblivion and others. Then just a few months ago, when i fired up Gears of War I heard this noise that sounded like the disc was being rubbed against concrete. So I just sent mine in tuesday and have to miss out on Bioshock for a while, and pay $20 for M$ to replace my GOW disc, so i'm a bit irratated. At least this is allowed me to get back into my Wii. I'm now a pro at bowling and tennis

  • Brother got his 360 brand spankin' new about 6 mo's after launch(as soon as they were available in short supply). RROD.

Of course, with his luck he opened it up and tried the many solutions available on the web, with no success. About a week later they extended the warranty.

Just bought a 360 off a friend after he picked up the 'elite'...I am hoping no RROD, or at least if it happens, it happens under warranty and when they are shipping out replacements w/HDMI and 45nm.

  • On my 4th since launch. Recently had a repair (3RROD) and it looks to be crapping out again already. Not happy.

  • Well I'm probably dooming mine, but I've had it since US launch without a single problem and plenty of hours logged. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go knock on some wood. zing.

  • Got Mine on launch.(11/22/05) No scrached games,no RROD.

  • Still on my first, had it a year. I think it's due to the ambient temperature of the house; it's kept quite cold here, so all sorts of electronics that die elsewhere mysteriously come back to life here.

You have no idea how perplexed my friends are when they bring "broken" mp3 players/HDDs to me to fix, and I use them on without a hitch, until they leave the house.

  • On my third. Bought the first in January after launch. The console was manufactured in November 2004.

  • My original from march of 2006 and my Elite still work great. Sorry bout yours RROD-ing, but do we have to hear about the RROd every day, or at least 5 times a week? Ms needs to fix their shit, and thats a no-brainer. No offense, but its getting old.

P.S. Microsoft fix your stupid DRM so when people get a new replacement they can play their arcade games without having to be online. That blows.

  • Got mine last summer. It only lasted for about a little more than 2 months.

Suffice to say, will not buy on
