As blank Dreamcast disc supplies begin to dwindle, could Xbox Live Arcade become a new haven for scrolling-shooter fans? With games like Triggerheart Exelica, Ikaruga, and this game here, Hudson's Omega Five coming to the platform, shmuppets might have good reason to pick up a 360 in the coming months. Omega Five is a a hardcore side-scrolling shooter featuring 360 degree shooting, five characters with unique special attacks and weapons, and local co-op. It looks gorgeous, and with Natsume working with Hudson it should either end up excellent or inadvertently a farming sim. Welcome to the age of digital-delivery shmuppery!

looking good, this is the kind of stuff I want to see on live
Looks pretty, I'm curious how it plays - those are some massive player sprites.
*Kool-Aid man crashes through the screen*
Oh, YEAH!!!!!
woooo more games!!
yes! i love side scrollers and this is making me super excited for live.
and here i though tgs would have nothing for me in the US .i hate how games take for ever to come to live though >< wheres my puzzle quest!
Now all I want for christmas is FORGOTTEN WORLDS!
C'mon capcom where you at?
no online coop?
and how "hardcore" is this? i've never heard of this game...
Let's not forget Shikigami no Shiro 3 and Raiden 4. Side and vertical scrolling shmups are alive and well on XBLA, it seems.
Anyway, having seen some gameplay videos of Omega Five on IGN, I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. The first footage I've seen of the game (on TeamXbox, I believe) really did nothing for me. This, however, looks totally awesome.

Whoa, back up, Shikigami AND Raiden are coming to Live as well????
*dies*
*get's back up*
It jsut keeps getting better.
This game looks comepletely awesome.
Here´s to more great XBLA games /cheer
Looks really pretty.
Man, between XBLA and VC I don't even know how to handle myself, there are so many shmups. I'm especially interested in this and Ikaruga for XBLA, Ikaruga was always beautiful and should be even better, and yea the enemy and player graphics in this look huge/great. I wonder if Sony is gonna get on the ball and release more shumps for PSN, they don't want to risk falling behind in this key area!
@Mr.Waffleton: It's not exactly certain whether Raiden 4 will be a retail title or an XBLA release, but it's coming.

@DaiMacculate: The PS3 is getting Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer ( [www.soldner-x.com] )which also looks sick, but it seems XBLA has the edge for now.
Sorry for doubleposting, btw.
GACK
Must...resist...360...awesomeness level...rising...
nice prodigy reference.
Don't forget, standard CD-R's can be configured to play games on Dreamcast, so there will never be a short supply. Lest we all forget why piracy of these games on CD-Rs was one of the highly lethal factors in the DC demise.
man, why can't the psn at least get similar love. its hard to vote with my dollar when my only option is microsoft. all these great oldschool games getting announced for live and none for ps3... :,[
Damn, MS must have a factory. A factory for hats. Hats made of money. Delivered to you favorite developer :)
If only Sony would get into the hat market...
C'mon give me my GigaWing on xbla :)
"could Xbox Live Arcade become a new haven for scrolling-shooter fans?"
No. It would have to sell a lot better in Japan than it does. A handful of emu-ports isn't making me believe anything.
Side by side Ikaruga on XBL vs the NAOMI original (which we did), its painfully obvious that this won't satisfy the hardcore Japanese crowd its designed to reach.
Any Short Circuit reference is a good reference in my book.
@theberserker22: Nah, I'd say it's more likely that Microsoft's hats are made of reports about Xbox 360 software attatch rates, especially for third party releases and XBLA releases in general.
According to wikipedia, there are currently 43 PSN games either already released or in confirmed development. A huge majority of those are developed by Sony's first or second party studios and only six of them are being published by third parties. There seems to be a lot more room for third parties on XBLA.
To a lesser extent, that's also true for retail releases. Pretty much all of biggest PS3 hits so far have been Sony's own games. That's not exactly a healthy environment for third parties.
@root1: It will definitely sell well to the hardcore crowd in the west, though. So even if it doesn't help Xbox 360 get a foothold in Japan, it will open the door for more similar games. And some of them just might make it in Japan as well.
Why am i still seeing comments along the lines of 'if you dont have a 360, is a good reason to pick one up if your a fan of .'
The things been out for years, if you dont have one now but youre still umming an ahhing aint nothing gonna tip your scales, not even halo3 as theres a f*** load of decent games in that genre already out.
Whadaya know kotuku removes angled brackets making my last post make no damn sense
@INSANE_COBRA
Good thing all five of us 'hardcore' (see: shmup) gamers in the west will be happy :p Wanna come over and time attack with me?
ANGRY ORGAN MAN LIKE PRODIGY REFERENCE.
@Truepatriot: Wow thanks for the links man. A dude with a giant lava gun and a turtle robot? Sign me up.
All I need now is Space Harrier...Sega?
@root1: So you don't think Ikaruga will stay on the top 10 list of XBLA games for at least a month after its release? Not only hardcore shmup fans will buy it, it's much easier to find an audience for digitally distributed games with demos than for traditionally distributed retail titles. Especially for semi-legendary games like Ikaruga.
@ Everyone:
for those not in the know (like i was):
"shoot 'em up (or shmup for short)"
- thank you google and wiki.
@insane_cobra: Oh yeah, I remember hearing something about that. I'm not in the Ps3 crew just yet myself, but I'm trying to make a list so that when i do get one I check out the smaller titles I might otherwise miss.
As to your point about XBL and 360 in general seeming more open to 3rd party and indie games, isn't that just ironic since the PS2 became so dominant precisely because it had the best 3rd party support? Maybe it'll even out over the next few years, but right now its crazy lopsided.
You know what I would like to see.
Air buster
I'm looking forward to this, but I wish it had online play. Non-online XBLA games don't sell nearly as well.
@DaiMacculate: It is ironic. Sony has made a big point of concentrating on first party games this time around, which in theory is certainly not a negative thing. Every platform can benefit from a healthy first party, but when it becomes too dominant, it can develop into a problem.
@lordargent: I like the way you think.
X360 is actually getting more attractive with all these diversified lineups. kinda make people rethink about 360 being FPS haven (it's still is, though)
Why all the excitement, it's not like we'll actually be able to play SHMUPS on 360 with the horridly awful D-pad from hell...
man this is why xbla is so awesome. psn could learn a few things. Also have a better inferface... cause DAMN it's slow.
@Gam3r: The d-pad is completely fine when it comes to movement, though complex motions that many fighting games utilize are tougher to pull off. It's perfectly functional.
I can't wait for all these shmups. I'm going to start saving up for a good load of MS Points soon..
Wow when was the last time Natsume made a shoot'em up? If ever...
Apparently there's a giant load of cool looking games on Live Arcade, and two or three good looking games for XBox. (Like viva Pinata, and maybe Eternal Sonata)
This is unfair, go back to only making shooters and sports and racing that I don't want.
Keep them coming. How about some UN Squadron?
Yes, some LOVIN' UN Squadron would be awesome!
i dont know how much i like this digital crapola. i like actually OWNING what i paid for, have it in my hands, etc.
its great to see my favorite genre AT ALL on the new consoles.
Well I'll be, It's Forgotten Worlds!!!
It's great to hear all the good shmup news. Now if they'd only talk playmore into making XBLA/VC/PSN versions of Twinkle Star Sprites. I'm pretty sure they got that property from ADK somehow.
@Gam3r:
Go pick up the DOA arcade stick or the VF5 arcade stick for the 360. Problem solved.
"must not use my leftover 3800m$ points yet"
I'd be jealous of 360 owners for all the amazing Live Arcade games, if only the consoles actually worked after a few hours of play. I wish PS3 would have some more decent games up for DL.
@root1:
Dude are you nutz? I'll give up my left testicle to play Ikaruga on Live if it means I won't have to track down the overpriced Dreamcast disc on eBay.
.
@EVILLE1, Forgotten Worlds coin-op is easily in my top-five greatest coin-ops of all time list. the audio, alone, was simply amazing!
