Mass Effect Features Sex Scene, Breasts

masseffectbox.jpgWhile we knew that Mass Effect was going to contain partial nudity, we were sadly lacking on details, but no longer. The British Board of Film Classification has revealed it's rating for Mass Effect, revealing in the process some revealing details about...well, revealing. According to the classification the game has been given a 12 rating due to "moderate violence and one sex scene". Ah, the sound of happy GameStop employees raking in preorders. While the scene is undetailed, one version does contain breast nudity. Wait, there are different versions?

"If playing as a male character the scene can take place between him and a human woman or a humanoid female alien. If playing as a female character the scene can take place between her and a male human or a female humanoid alien."
Lesbian alien sex and the Brits only give it a 12? I am living in the wrong country.

  • You also know you can have non sexual full frontal nudity and get a U certificate.

  • Let me guess, its only the female character that you see. No cock for Bioware I am sure.

  • I'm not too concerned with these types of ratings for this game, more like the ones on gamerankings.

  • I think the ratio of players playing as female for Mass Effect just rose exponentially.

  • No human male alien for the girl characters? Is this is a race of female only aliens?

  • @Tull: Check.

  • I find it odd that the female character can't have sex with a male humanoid alien, hopefully that's a typo. I mean if you are going to put sex in your free form RPG, there's no halves, either every single coupling combination or none at all

  • @Tull: I was about to laugh but then I realised you were right.

  • I actually had no idea there was going to be nudity, but i'v always wanted a game where i'd be able to simulate space love.

  • Poor gay men - Bioware never makes any content for them. In KOTOR, Jade Empire, and now Mass Effect, you could be a heterosexual character of either sex or a lesbian. Where is the gayboy love?

  • Not unexpected. Bioware has had girl-on-girl options in its games since Kotor 1.

  • Either that's a typo, or BioWare is sadly perpetuating a form of homophobia - Lesbians are cool, gays are bad and should never be seen evar.

I doubt it will wreck Mass Effect if that turns out to be the case, but I am annoyed if it is true just because of the obvious turn towards straight male fanservice.

  • No male / male, that's a first for Bioware. Penis is a major deal in motion pictures, with guys rarely showing off. And when they do, it's generally something like Kinsey where it's purely a clinical thing.

Given how gaming's audience is mostly teenage to adult males, showing wang wouldn't really do anything for the gae, but could possibly hurt the game. So...

  • @Rebochan: They know where their bread is buttered, its a simple pander to their audience. Just gotta deal.

I'm hispanic and offended by Miller Lite's "Chill" beer commercials, again simply pandering to an audience and just gotta deal. Even if mildly offensive to a certain group.

  • @Rebochan:

As far as I can remember, this is the first Bioware game without man on man.

  • here's the thing. The female whiteskined alien(one of the asari) we keep seeing is asexual, like her entire race. Hence the males can romance her and so can the females.

  • @ShiroRX: I disagree that I just have to put up with it. I'm not calling for a boycott or anything, but hey, stereotypes aren't okay just because they're pandering to a prejudiced audience. To move to a really extreme example, there would be an outcry if, say, values worthy of the KKK were used to sell beer.

  • @ach77: Where is the gayboy love?

Actually BioWare has given players gayboy love in Jade Empire. Male characters can "romance" the other male character Sky in the game.

  • @Jesse7150: I had wondered about that - the only alien race that looks like it could actually have sex with humans at all is asexual and feminine.

  • Human/alien lesbian action. As if I wasn't going to get this game already!

  • One step closer to some hot Asari on Human action. Next, we'll see some Turian/Krogan stuff...

  • It does suck that there's no option to have a gay male relationship, but I wouldn't put the blame for that on Bioware. I'm certain that there was the option to have a gay male character in Baldur's Gate II, and unless I'm mistaken, you could do the same in Jade Empire. This is probably more a result of the publisher (MS) trying to avoid media backlash from bible belt wackos on one of their biggest titles.

  • I want some Bandit Keith fan service.

  • Weak.

I guess alien male / human female love scene is the sci-fi equivalent of black male / white female on the silver screen.

  • No man sex, eh? We haven't come very far. In fact I think we've gone backwards. In the Ultima 7 you were free to use the *ahem* services of either the male or female workers at the bath house.

  • I wonder if this event will be scripted and just happen when you reach a certain point in the game or you'll have to converse your way there and swoon over the ladies/dude

  • Wow. I was going to lament the suggested lack of mansex, but it looks like I've done been beat to the punch.

    Which is awesome.

  • @ArmyofJuan: I really really hope this is scripted. The last thing I need in a video game is to play through the whole game as a virgin. I get enough of that in real life.

  • Now girl on girl action is always fun, but it does seem a bit crass that the only sex options are those that the heterosexual male demo are interested in.

Most of the female gamers I know are big RPG fans...so why not some candy for them. This si why there are so few female gamers.

  • They don't know how to sculpt alien penises.

  • Hey, that alien looks like a hot guy.
Maybe we should have sex with it.

  • meh. i saw someone post crap about being "homophobic" which is probably the most overused and misunderstood word in the english language. a phobia is a fear of something right? so being a homophobe is having a fear of gay people? hmmmm....

im a heterosexual, and thus i think gay stuff is nasty, gross, perverted, etc. does that mean im scared of gay people? hardly. i have several gay friends, and when i see them, i dont run off in terror at the site of something "gay". i do however cringe and call them nasty when they talk about making out with dudes.

conversely...are gay people heterophobic? if i called a gay person that, id be sued for all im worth. double standards are...heh....gay.

  • Hopefully they added that one chick from Total Recall with the three tits. The alien is magical I must say.

  • @Rebochan: You as the consumer have the right to two things. Buying the game, or not buying the game.

You do not have the right to certain content in the game. This is a work by someone that isn't you, that means that they're allowed to do what they want how they want. So yes, it IS okay for them to pander to an audience.

    Thank you, drive through.

  • @hulkster081: What mostly annoys me are the people that call heteralsexuals "breeders".

  • Also, i just have to say that who knew an alien race other than our own had the same sexual organs a human woman does.

Even aliens love them some vagina too.

  • I read breast and sex scene. WHERE IS BREAST AND SEX SCENE?

  • @ArmyofJuan: animals have vaginas too.

  • @hulkster081:

I'm not even going to get into the many things that bother me about your comment, but I do want to say:

Please keep your comments about how "nasty, gross and perverted" you find gay people off of Kotaku. We queer gamers have to deal with that crap enough without finding it here too...

  • @ach77: You're actually the one taking it to heart ach.

I personally have no enmity towards gays or lesbians, I too have friends of those persuasions. But when they start talking about what they engage in, I'd rather not hear it and tell them they're grossing me out.

I'm not walking up to you and saying "You're gross for being who you are." I'm saying "You're talking about something that makes me uneasy."

If I started telling you my views on certain subjects, I guarantee you that you'd tell me I was a gross and/or evil person. And yes, that's a guarantee. You need to stop taking everything as a frontal offense and accept things as just being the conversation they are.

  • @ACH77

not sure what would bother you about my post. i dont enjoy being called homophobic any more than you enjoy being called nasty and gross, yet im the one that gets labled as offensive. like i said, double standard.

  • What? I demand the possibility of yaoi! :0
Almost as annoying as the "girls can only have small scars and men can't have make-up", that was so lame.

Seems like a great game. I don't have a 360 though... So no boobs for me :(
Maybe it'll be on the pc eventually.

  • @SlamDancinMoogle:

    thank you sir, well said.

  • @SlamDancinMoogle: Oh, gotta do this too: Isn't Ach basically saying "what you're saying is making me uncomfortable", so I guess you should keep it to yourself next time. ;]

  • @O-Z: they show that on the silver screen, (that doesn't involve julia styles/jessica alba normal dance and/or a dance competition) now

  • Kotaku must've just jumped up in random Google hits based on this thread alone.

  • @Yin: yeah, but in the 'don't ask, don't tell' world. Ach was the first one to get 'up in arms' so-to-speak.

That's the problem with political correctness.

  • @SlamDancinMoogle:

well i guess technically i was the first one to be up in arms, but i wasnt really upset or anything...just making a point before people started posting all kinds of labled "homophobic" garbage.

  • I don't want to start a flame war, so this will be my last post in this thread, but I do think it's sad that people seem to think I'm being excessively politically correct because I don't like being called "nasty, perverted and gross".

But back to the topic at hand: yay for lesbians and boobies in video games! :P

  • I always wanted vaginas in my armpits.
The hair there kind of looks like pubes.

  • @SlamDancinMoogle: Actually Hulkster started it with bringing up the always so heavy hitting and apparently very important issue of "phobic" not fitting the purpose of the word. Nobody cares! Words dosn't have the right meaning anymore, there's lots of examples.

And "homophobic" might be acurate for the psychological thing about people being afraid of being labeled gay, and acting out against it for that reason. And then adopted as a general word. I don't know, I'm not a student of languages.

Let's talk about the game and how it's nice that it isn't censored instead, hm? It seems every mention of anything remotely gay here always gets a few of these
