The latest issue of Famitsu beats the ESP countdown clock to the punch, revealing Treasure's new Nintendo DS game. It's Bangai-O Spirits a remake of the frenetic Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast multi-directional shooter Bangai-O released in 1999. The Famitsu preview, which comes to us via 1UP, reveals that the game, due this winter in Japan, will feature wireless multiplayer and a stage editor.
The official product page is scheduled to go live today, so we'll hopefully get some direct feed screenshots soon. And while Bangai-O Spirits may get lost in the flood of damn good shooter news revealed over the past 24 hours, as a Bangai-O fan, I highly recommend you keep this one on your radar.

This information pleases me.
YES
Oh man, awesome.
Glee!
This week is now officially the best week ever for shooting game fans. All that needs to happen now is for Cave to announce their entire back catalogue for XBLA or something.
Seriously awesome!
Best news of the day!!! Can't wait! :D
I came, and then I came some more. Bangai-O was an awesome Dreamcast game. I never imagined this would happen, since Bangai-O was a big sleeper. Hell, what if this game's only getting released in Japan?
I want to take Bangai-O out behind the middle school and get it pregnant, I love it so.
And if it (for some crazy reason) is Japan only, that's what NCSX is for.
As a shooter fan, this is turning out to be a great day, first with all the new stuff coming out on XBLA and now this.
@RyGuy: DS games aren't region-locked, so at worst you'll have to pay a few extra bucks to import it.
Thank the Shooter Gods, for this month is becoming one of the greatest ever. Ikaruga, REZ.. and this?
We are not worthy!
I loved Bangai-O on the DC, though it was stolen a freaking month after I purchased it (with my entire PS1 and DC collections in tow). I'll finally get a chance to play it again!
First time I've ever heard of this, to be honest. But I guess if it's by Treasure, it's gotta be pretty good.
I came buckets. Bangai was sex on the N64/Dreamcast
OMFG! I knew it!
Has anyone looked at the official site? They just added two days to the timer! >:(
I'm sold already.
I almost forgot about Bangai-O. I'm going to have to get out my dreamcast.
YES YES YES!!!

This day has just been filled with wonderful news. Ikaruga, Rez, now Bangai-O... What next?
@Lacclolith: RADIANT SILVERGUN!?
One can hope. Despite the fact that it'll never happen, one can hope.
Oh hell yes.
I was just thinking about this game as I was lamenting one of the final nails in the coffin of the dreamcast (no sega hardware support). Man it was a blast.
The key of the game was that Treasure understood you don't want to conserve your super bombs, you want to use them and earn more. That mechanic was brilliant and should have been employed earlier in shooter history.
This is just great news!
OMG Happy Day!
A virtual console/XBLA version of Alien Soldier would be nice. Guardian Heroes too but that's but the fevered dream of a madman.
Actually!
Famitsu doesn't come out until Friday, and the countdown was set to end on Wednesday afternoon. Then, apparently, the countdown got pushed back two days, so that the info will go live online on Friday.
However! Game company employees (and other privileged people) receive their weekly copies of Famitsu on Wednesday. Hence the information getting out early.
It seems to me that Famitsu got pissy about their "exclusive" feature being beaten by a game's official site, so they had a word with ESP.
Still, the game will most certainly be awesome!
But, 108, the countdown is over! :) There's little to no information at the ESP site, just a piece of artwork and the game's title. Thanks for clearing up the early Famitsu info release. Ash had told me about this before, but it went in one ear and... then it got lost.
I almost bought a Dreamcast again for £20 just for Bangai-O, but I couldn't find the game anywhere. I was wondering when it would show up again! Best story in a shoot-em-up ever!
I remember driving and calling all over town (Las Vegas) trying to find a copy of Bangai-O when it 1st came out...and I found it in the most unlikely of places, to say the least. That said, and being the HUGE Bangai-O fan that I am, I am torn.
On one hand, a portable Bangai-O is teh absolute SEX!!!...however, I was really hoping the original would be made downloadable for one if not all of the next gen consoles to give the the ability to shoot with a proper analog joystick. I was REALLY looking forward to that.
That said, it won't control much differently on the DS than the Dreamcast/N64 version, so although it's a wash on the control front, it's made of extra win on the portable front! W00T!
I LOVE BANGAI-O!
Okay, now that that's out of the way, why do they always put "wireless multiplayer" as a feature? I've never ever seen a DS "hooked up" to another DS. I'd really like it if they finally started treating us like people with BRAINS and tell us whether it was AD HOC or INFRASTRUCTURE(i.e. internet play or in-the-same-room play).
Jesus, how much more glad could I be that I bought a DS? :P
If they announced Life Force, Thunder Force 3, and Gaiares for VC or XBLA, this would be a 100$ perfect week for shooters.
i got this for dreamcast O_O
Bangai-O totally messed up my exam revision!
Awesome game, let's hope more people get to play it this time around.
Awe... some...
Two concerns though. The control scheme has the potential to suck mightily, what with the lack of real analog control on the DS. Second, the translation MUST be kept exactly as it appeared on the Dreamcast. No improved localization here, thanks!
@Karlott: I want someone to finish Thunder Force VI dammit!
YEAAAAAAAAAA BANGAI-O!!! i love that game.
