Sega's recently trademarked title Golden Axe: Beast Rider is featured in the latest issue of Play magazine, finally giving gamers a look at the next-gen follow-up that was announced in May of 2006. According to Xboxygen's report, originally in French, the game will feature Golden Axe hottie Tyrus Flare, feature heavy levels of violence and even sport some much needed nudity. The mature action RPG, in development at Secret Level, was originally slated for the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3, but Xboxygen writes it's now a 360 exclusive.
We've contacted Secret Level to learn more about the game's PS3 status, but for those without access to a copy of Play, a single photographed screen shot is available at the link below.

Woohoo! I love me some Golden Axe.
I want to play as Death Adder.
Another XBox Exclusive? I don't know how MS keeps pulling off these coups. **Sheds a Katamari tear**
That's a little disappointing about the PS3 deal, but I'll still get it even if it's 360 exclusive. It's just too damn badass to pass up. I just hope there won't be any online multiplayer that I'll be missing out on because I'm too damn cheap to subscribe to Xbox Live. Golden Axe co-op = teh awesums.
lets see how this turns out.
also, i predict an okami wii post in....
uhhh lets hope the graphics's upgrade this time.. as golden axe is the only game i can think of where it gets progressively worse each time
sighs. again with the "not coming to ps3".
@resetbutton: Slow down! Don't take that Xbox 360 only report as official just yet. I'm waiting to hear back.
Well tho it says xbox exclusive it doesnt mean it will stay that way as you read they did not get any definate answers that the ps3 version wasnt being made so until its official that there aint no ps3 version then id assume there still is.
As for the game itself im a golden axe fan being an oldschool sega fan an from that small pic it looks pretty good graphical so hope it plays out an is good in the end. Tho with sega wanting to make money who knows a wii version might surface LOL.
@McWhertor: yea true. if it is exclusive to 360, hopefully they'll give you a honest reason why (capcom) and no BS response.
@STARSBarry:
I thought the arcade Golden Axe 2 was quite decent. The one with the centaur chick.
I dont know enough about this game to be disappointed that is an "xbox 360 exclusive" just yet :P
but we shall wait and see
that's an awesome picture. i want a wallpaper of that.
Well, Secret Level's website still has it as multiplatform although the last time it was updated was back in 2006 so things might have changed.
@Fluffy22: Golden Axe is classic my friend. some might be turned off by it because of the "outdated" graphics (very very outdated), but it's fun. Especially with Co-op
a mature game with the subtitle "beast rider" with nudity? Sounds like something I'd have to pass an age gate to read about...
How does m$ keep doing it??????? Look at the dollar sign in Micro$oft ... they are buying the games.
@ChibiKyKiske:It's too bad the content and integrity of play doesn't match the cover art. They make a habit of gushing over thoroughly medicore games.
@jun581: ive played the old old golden axe, just this new one - dunno much :)
@McWhertor: Thanks for checking into it... My heart sank a bit when I read the 360 exclusive thing.
This is why I own all three consoles(sold my kidney).
My friend will freak out over this news. He's somewhat obsessed over GA and plays the XBLA at my house every time he is there.
Much like Bionic Commando a few days ago I'm disappointed that the screenshot of this game doesn't scream Golden Axe to me. At a glance I'd think it was yet another barren MMORPG or almost good Ninety Nine Nights.
Where the hell is my primary color coded trio of iconic heroes and heroine kicking the shit out of tiny men for magic bottles, giant men wielding stone warhammers and a town built on the back of a giant tortoise?
Eh, kinda worried about this one. It could be a good game, but the title itself puts doubt in my mind.
We have great technology these days. We all saw Odin Sphere. Why can't Sega deliver a new Golden Axe (or Streets of Rage) with stunning 2D visuals in HD with traditional gameplay intact? I'll hope that this game at least decent.
@CyberSkull: Unless your friend has faced down Deather Adder in front of a captive audience on the machines nestled inbetween Bad Dudes and Punch-Out in front of a drug store in 1989 he's just a poser!
@O-Z: Sooo... 5 people are good to go then?
There was talk that it was suppose too be a ps3 exclusive so lets all wait until we get confirmation on said exclusivity.
Ugggg, give up on this exclusive crap. I want everything for everyone...
I might have to pick up that copy of Play although I stopped my subscription because they're all terrible reviewers.
Beast Rider? Don't tell me the game is entirely on the back of an animal...
@O-Z: LOL
dear god you made me realize that I'm getting old T_T
oh HELL yes.
I am so pumped right now.
Why is there a general sentiment of a PS3 exclusive being okay but an Xbox 360 exclusive being some kind of horrible loss? Am I missing something here?
@RedFive: maybe because the PS3 is LOSING games to X360 as exclusives lol
@demonwolf: How does m$ keep doing it??????? Look at the dollar sign in Micro$oft ... they are buying the games.
Yup, they're paying everyone huge piles of money. You've got it. There's no other reason why developers might target the XBox exclusively. Nothing like "ease of development," or "larger market share," or "online community."
I was part of a focus group for gamers that asked us what we wanted out of this game and they showed us some early video of gameplay, artwork, etc. From what I saw it looks like it could be really fun. Of course we didn't see much relating to story, multiplayer, and features beyond combat.
God, I need to subscribe to play, why do I keep putting it off?! It's practically a monthly video game Art Book. >_<
I found this video around E3 2006. It's the only video of NextGen Golden Axe I ever saw. If you havent seen it yet, enjoy!

@icarusprime: Just so long as you don't pay any mind to their reviews. I've never seen anyone hand out so many 9's.
@OneFreeMan: I don't blame company's dev for the 360. Just makes me sad they aren't willing to work on the PS3 versions also and learn how to dev for it. You can never convince me that the PS3 isn't as powerful or can't be developed on. I've played the demo for ratchet and clank... And I would say you're lying :-p. (if you made that argument)
But in all honestly, the money does help. It's shown with games like GTA that Microsoft is willing to shell out money to get the game or at least something to go "Ha Ha look what we have".
But there are also some games that don't make sense not to be multiplatform. I bring up Ace Combat. That game should be on both period. 360 for American fans and PS3 for Japan (and me… don't own a 360 yet). (Cause lets be honest it has a HUGE fan base there and the 360's don't have the same user base that would equal huge amounts of profit) You can't tell me something didn't happen there. Wither it be marketing dollars or a pay out. If it's marketing dollars ok that's normal in this industry (Sony and Nintendo have done it for years). So there's a reason for people to say those kinds of things. Don't get me wrong, there not 100% fair, but neither is calling out the PS3. (which you didn't do… I'm now making a general statement)
Can't we all just get along?(You can continue flaming now, in fact flame me if you like... I've got to start my drive home and I won't be able to defend myself)
@Rabidsquirrel: He wasn't flaming anyone. He was just mocking the absurdity of the "Microsoft buys every exclusive" mentality some people have. The PS3 does have a lot of power, perhaps slightly more than 360, perhaps not. But it takes more work to get that power out of it, and given the size of the install base compared to the 360, many lower-profile games will go exclusive simply due to lower financial risk.
If the PS3 closes the gap significantly this holiday season, you'll see more lower-profile games go multiplatform or PS3 exclusive.
I had Golden Axe 2 for the Genesis and played some of the original on the arcade machine. They were good then, but that sort of gameplay isn't too interesting anymore for something being developed in 2007. I guess that's why they're making it a "mature action RPG." My guess is that this game turns out only loosely resembling Golden Axe.
that picture happened when lair and heavenly sword had a baby.
Remember that this is Play magazine that we are talking about here. They tend to make it a habit to get the platform wrong for games all the time!
I saw this game back in 06 at e3. It looked so cool.
From what I understand its all in game footage.
It dose not look like the crappy Sega remakes they have been pumping out in the past several years or so.
As far as what I saw of the game play, the player is constantly riding a beast and fighting shit left and right while on the go. It looks ace.
Heres a link. if i can find my personal footage, I shall post it up on youtube.
[youtube.com]
link fail due to kotaku, lol its ok. just look it up on youtube.
Man this makes me so happy I been waiting for a next gen version of this game for the longest. I just hope that you are not always riding a beast and that you can pick new ones from enemys like the old games. Now that leaves streets of rage left on my next gen remake wish list. Come on sega make this old school fan boy dreams come true ; )
Who the fuck uses the chick in golden axe?! Everyone knows the original was all about the dwarf with the... err... golden axe. It would be a travesty if they went the cheap t 'n a cash in route and made this just another generic chick in skimpy armour hack-n-slash.
man.. i really wish this wasnt done by americans, maybe im old fashioned, but making everything super violent and have nudity and stuff.. especially classic franchises just doesnt appeal to me. im sorry but if it aint broke, dont fix it.. old school golden axe wasnt rated M, so why now? besides, it didnt work with final fight, so why would they let these guys screw up golden axe. if they FINALLLY get around to a new streets of rage, i hope so hard it isnt by some americans that turn blaze into a stripper, adam into a drug dealing pimp, and axel into an ex con that curses like hes in elementary school and just learned how to do it.
shouryuken
dust that wii off... its calling your name.... all the happy non violent games like cooking mama
sigh... and i was hoping for some side scrolling...
nudity? so they already screwed the game up, realized it, and are now expecting pixel tatters to sell the game? ugh.... using it as a selling point makes me wonder though, just how much nudity will be in it for them to feel the need to mention it? do they really think it will get an M rating? o_O
i'd love a new streets of rage though, as well as a REAL sequel to the original perfect dark, as well as goldeneye on 64. mmmmmm....
it'd also be nice if they could get all 3 streets of rage games, and the original n64 perfect dark and goldeneye on live arcade. heck, even just the multiplayer alone would be sweet.
