60GB PS3 Being Taken Out To Pasture

According to SCEE president David Reeves, the now-cheaper 60GB PS3 will be sold out in the US by the end of the month. Once they're gone? No more. Ever.

All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.
Once that happens, he says, there'll be just the 80GB models. Which cost $599. So if you want in on some of that PS3 price-cut action, you'd best get cracking.

This announcement does little but raise a whole load of questions. Why announce such a short-term price-cut? Why is the president of SCE Europe saying this? Why are Europe and Australia still receiving models being phased out in the US? How long will the "limited edition" 80GB MotorStorm bundle last? Who knows. If you need me, I'll be out the back, scratching my head.

  • There's going to be rioting in the streets. No Sony exec is safe.

  • Could this be the 2nd price drop this year that one company was talking about?

  • It's always the European execs that have to rain on any parade.

  • lol Europeans?

I'm scratching my head too, and I promise you it's not crabs this time.

  • please, this is just more effort to help sales.
$500 80GB, with cheaper diodes/chipset/no EE right around the corner, keeping price-slash buzz going through the holidays. No one believes theyre gonna stay $600 only, do they? The real debate is, will the $500 bundle somehting or go to $450 for the holidays.

  • Oh, wow Sony, just when I think you do something right with the PS3 for once...

  • Wait...wait...did I just read that Sony is deciding to undermine the single tactic that was going to actually sell the PS3? Wow.

  • This is all crap... some guy from Europe makes this statement, that's just so everybody runs out and buys the 60 GB... what's today Friday.. dont expect any update on this until Monday, this weekend a lot of 60 GB's will sell.

This whole console war shit is turning out like the WWF. WTF.

  • Sony. lol.

  • LUKE OH MY GOD PLEASE TAKE IT DOWN! I'M BEGGING YOU, WE HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS IS TRUE.

-REMEMBER HE IS WRONG ABOUT SHIT!
-REMEMBER THAT THE 80GB COULD ALWAYS BECOME 499 WHEN YOU TAKEOUT MOTORSTORM AND THE EXTRA CONTROLLER
-REMEMBER E3 WHERE THEY MADE A BIG DEAL ABOUT ONE BEING FOR MEDIA BUFFS AND THE OTHER BEING FOR THE NORMAL GAMER

    REMEMBER NEOGAF READERS REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALSO REMEMBER THE NAME BRIAN SABINO NEOGAFFERS, THIS NAME HAS SOME BIG NEWS TO RELEASE TO YOU GUYS FIRST EXCLUSIVELY!

  • Damn I had a feeling what they were alluding to so really there wasn't a price drop persay just clearance on the older 60GB units.

  • This... is ridiculous!
So in the end MS did everything right in NOT announcing a price cut of their own? The customer says "Thank You all"! /sarcasm

  • alright, what the crap? lol.

maybe the 80 gb will be lowered to 500 without a bundle and a 200 GB will be introduced instead. LOL

  • Hopefully they use the 80gig as the new 60 gig, and bring back the 20gig at 399 for the holiday ala Capcom exec's speculation. The 60gig liquidation could be a way to make the money necessary to place the 20gig at 399 for Christmas, or the 80gig at 499.

  • FUCK NO. Unless they are lowering the price again, HELL MOTHER****ING NO. HEADS. WILL. ROLL.

  • If this is true it'll be Sony's second biggest blunder ever. The first being the PS3.

  • I suspect that the 80GB will be cut once the 60GB is gone. Simply because the 80GB PS3 is cheaper to produce than the 60GB

  • @Zer0Force: REMEMBER TO TURN OFF THE CAPS LOCK, TOO.

  • @MAKEMONEY

    Sonymania is running mild

  • Sounds like they wanted to replace the old system with the new, but who would buy up the remaining old systems at the same price as the superior system? The price cut seems designed to clean out the leftovers.

  • Sony just needs to fire everybody at the top and hire me and the rest of the superfans to run things over there in Europe, then maybe i can show off my new tattoo, that reads "PLAY" and "STATION" on each buttcheek, at the next keynote

  • Also: after the 60gb PS3 are gone, Sony will drop the 80gb to $499 because of the emotion engine. The new PS3s' will not have PS2's emotion engine built in for perfect backward compatibility, but instead it will use software emulation (ie. 360). No emotion engine in new PS3 = less cost to produce, Sony probably will drop the price soon after the old ones sell out.

  • Wow, who's actually surprised by this?

  • LMFAO@Sony

  • It's funny, one bad rumor and all of Sony's E3 good will is gone.

  • @TheIrishNinja:

    1. Its cruse control for cool.
    2. I want to be loved by gaf...like my parents never would.
    3.Why won't gaf love me?
4.I need to make sure I can spin this as an employee of...dammit you almost got me.

  • @thefoxtrot: 80GB HDD also cost less in bulk to produce than 60GB.

Really this move is quite smart,as they will be able to get the cost of the consoles down quite quickely. It wouldn't surprise me if the console was cut to 399 by christmas once they introduce the new chips

  • Could this be another b.s. story? Nothing against Ashcraft, but the rumble rumor was taken a little bit out of context? (And that sony rep didn't know what he was talking about) On that point, you think that a major announcement like re-adding rumble would be a major presentation point for an exec.
If this is true, than Sony (IMO) is bar none the most alienating and arrogant company currently in exsistence. No way a PS3 will grace my fine entertainment setup anytime soon...unless MSG4 can somehow provide happy endings....

  • LMAO @ Sell out all 60GB PS3's in three weeks!
What, are there only 150,000 of them left? Hahaha

Who said SONY have learned from their mistakes?

  • *repeatedly slams head into desk*

Why in the world would they think this a good idea? Just keep the 60GB, even if they're planning on lowering the 80GB to $499, just move the 60GB to $449, or $399.

  • @jip100:

    good point

  • @TheIrishNinja: And how is everyone that is gonna quick rush out and buy a 60gb gonna feel when they realize they could have waited till november and got the 80gb for the same price? Soooo shady, sony. All the poor sons-of-bitches that are buying 60gbs now are gonna shit a brick if they get taken like this.

  • @thefoxtrot: more or less the same theory, but i truly think theyre done with the 20 GB at this point; plans for a digital media service a la XBL really cemented that for me.

@Zer0Force: piss, i really didnt mean to ruin your joke...i just stay away from NEOGAF so it went right past me.

  • Ummm, as far as i know, Best Buy doesn't even have the new sku in the computer system yet. I'm not sure about this one. It would be the most retarded thing in the world for Sony to re-up the price at the end of this month. Christ... who knows. I'm giving up on this stuff.

  • @cringer8: You're right, I read there are 3.5 million consoles collecting dust in stores...

  • Yeah.... MSG4, like mono sodium glutamate four: trouble at the asian massage parlor. Man...I'm suprised that ban hasn't come sooner.

  • Ya - if you put your bitching and complaining aside, it's actually a nice interview that makes a lot of sense :).

Sony wants to produce the cheaper emotion-engine-less PS3. They're just offering the US customers 20GB extra as a trade-in for that, and give you a chance to buy the older model (with EE) for cheap too. I honestly can't see what's wrong with that. As he explained, around the christmas season when more games are out they will re-evaluate their options, which sounds like good news to me, they probably have some good deals in store.

  • there are 60gig units sitting on store shelves in the US and they cost more to make than the 80gig, what do you do?

You create a "PERCEIVED VALUE" pack that you can put on shelves temporarily, When the 60gb SKU becomes hard to find they can put the 80gb out without a game at $499, or less.

  • @Downlord: "And how is everyone that is gonna quick rush out and buy a 60gb gonna feel when they realize they could have waited till november and got the 80gb for the same price?"

20GB more, who cares about that. They won't feel disappointed because they've had months longer to enjoy their PS3 and they've got ones with EE chips too.

  • From the interview:

But you're still asking people to commit GBP 425 to a games console. Isn't there a problem with the perception that that's an awful lot of money to shell out?

"It is, but surprisingly, people are paying that amount of money for it." (emphasis mine)

Surprisingly? Maybe they just shouldn't let this guy do interviews.

  • lamest. pricedrop. ever.

  • This seems a little too fishy to me.
How can they sell more their target goal of 11 million units by the end of the year? Perhaps a little scare that a cheaper PS3 will no longer be available will suffice?

  • Just when Sony found the light at the end of the tunnel, they decide to push the big red button that blows up the exit in front of them.

  • wtf...

anybody else think the 80gb should be 499...

if sony is sneaky enough, this could be to push units and then the 60gb with the emulator comes out.

if not, it's the same damn formula selling the 80gb @ 599... which is still too much. 20 gb doesn't justify a 100 dollar price difference.

now everyone's stuck... 499 for a 60gb with the emotion engine or wait for the rumble controllers...

  • @cringer8: In his defence on that quote, I think he's being sarcastic towards the interviewer.

  • I believe him! When the 60GB is gone the 80 GB will be $499,-.

  • Foxtrot are you by any chance "Masker" on gamefaqs? Because I just saw the exact same quote mentioned by you, on there.

  • @cervantes21: wow, you sure got your mind made up on sony's every move, from this thing here to the "fake"r rumble news.

@Downlord: if it works out that way, why would they feel any different than i do for having bought the $600 60 GB a few months back? does sony owe its current base money back if they wanna move 11 million units, much of which over the holidays? you do know how businesses work, yes?

@MarvinTheParanoidGamer: see, i thought they said they wanted to get down to 1 SKU cause of production costs. again, i know no one's gonna hear me here, but if and when they can sell at$400-$450, theyll do so, with their main (if not only) system.

@cringer8: you might have a point there.

  • @thefoxtrot: yeah I bet that will happen around the time they announce the new 140 gig with Little Big Planet packed in at $599

  • I don't know why everyone's counting on the 80GB being 500$. An upgrade AND a price cut, when they're already hemorraging money with each console sold? Doubt it.

  • @TheIrishNinja:

Becides the capslock joke, I was being quite serious. I signed up for an account on NEOGAF to bring them all this awesome insider news but, They never sent the validate email.

I emailed the site admin and never got a reply ;(

If I can only do one thing before I die its to get gaf to love me.

  • @cringer8: Lol. Another great quote by Sony!

  • sony... no please god dammit no :'( I want a ps3 in November and you guys keep pushing me away! I am not willing to pay an extra $100 for a game I will never in my life play, and an overpriced 20Gb that I will most likely soon be able to make up for with a external hard drive
