It's no surprise that Nintendo has been kicking ass and taking names over the past year with the Wii and the DS. As a matter of fact, the NPD numbers prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Well, this month's NPD Group numbers are no exception, seeing the Wii and DS as the number one selling systems in the U.S.
This time however, instead of sending out a static business email filled with numbers, Nintendo has enlisted their own Princess Peach to deliver the news. Cute and corny? Yes, but at least it's not dull and boring. More emails should be like this. Because let's face it, who wouldn't want to get a message from Peach?
Make the jump to read Peach's communique'!
Oh, my! All this attention is enough to make a girl blush!
As a princess I'm used to being adored, but this is just too much! I know I'm probably sounding like a broken record, but once again my friends at the NPD Group are telling me that Wii and Nintendo DS finished May as the most popular systems in the United States.
Thanks to everyone for your wonderful support! Nintendo couldn't have made it back to the top without you. You're all Mario-caliber heroes in my book.
Now I'm not one to brag, but some of the top games of this month happen to feature someone very pretty and popular - me! I'm talking about the super-fun Mario Party 8 and Super Paper Mario for Wii. Sure, Mario gets top billing, but from where I sit (on my throne), I'd say he's earned it. Besides, my own game on Nintendo DS, Super Princess Peach, is still selling strong, showing that a girl can do anything she puts her mind to.
I think all my Super Princess Peach fans would have just as much fun working to earn their Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree. I'm not in that one, but don't worry, I'm not going anywhere. Be sure to watch for me in my super-stylish soccer gear in Mario Strikers Charged, which arrives on Wii on July 30. I can't wait!
Kisses!
Peach

heh heh, I guess it is less dull than the other press releases though. :)
Take notes, Sony. Princess Peach is more effective PR than animal slaughter.
i think she's h4wt
"I'm not in that one, but don't worry, I'm not going anywhere."
Oh my, is that possibly a jab at Sony losing all their exclusives, that I see there?
I think it's time Peach got redrawn with a more modern look... Or maybe I'm just a pervert.
When did they change the drawing's name from Princess Toadstool?
What the? That's kinda weird. But creative.
@Walshicus: She's always been Peach in Japan. The whole Toadstool bit was an American thing, I think.
Interesting press release, though.
I'd hit that.
Is there anyone that Peach won't flirt with?
I swear, she'll do anything to not go out with Mario.
I would do everything to that woman.
The dude who wrote this probably felt shamed. Or aroused, there's people for everything.
The dude who wrote this probably felt shamed. Or aroused,
Or both, with one a direct result of the other, or vice versa...
@98abaile:
No
@BigChiefSmokem:
... She's a video game character. Get a life.
@98abaile: For making the biggest mental leap I've come across this week, you win a cupcake.
I'm not too sure that's a real mental leap, though if it was intended as a jab at Daxter, it's pretty subtle. Like any proper royal insult, really.
Oh Peach. I'll rescue you from Bowser anytime, but I don't think I'll be playing Super Princess Peach. I'm afraid it will turn me into a woman.
This is also on nintendo.com.
Am I the only one that heard a high-pitched chalky voice while reading that?
@Konatsu:
Yeah, if I remember correctly, Super Mario 64 introduced her as Princess 'Peach' Toadstool.
@Konatsu: I think Mario 64 tried to reconcile the two different names. At the start when the princess narrates her letter to Mario she says "Yours truly, Princess Toadstool... Peach". So it almost sounds to me like it's a nickname, like sweet-cheeks or sugar-tits.
@K-OSS: Mario's a fat plumber, what do you expect?
My head just exploded from the cute. And yes, I heard the squeaky Peach-voice in my head when I read it too.
That umbrella doesn't seem too happy.
@PhotoBoy: Princess Peach "Sugar-tits" Toadstool. Now everyone's happy!
Interesting way to send a PR - after all, there's never too much of Sugar-tits! However, unlike goat slaughter or pissing off the Church of England this PR is quite forgettable.
"Because let's face it, who wouldn't want to get a message from Peach?"
... Me. Every time that woman writes a letter, someone gets kidnapped or someone decides to destroy the world. I'm not having it.
Hmmm... does Rule #34 apply to Princess Peach?
/off to check GIS
@PhotoBoy: I'd think it's more of a first and last name thing. Her last name is Toadstool, and her given name is Peach.
Regardless, it was just a silly way to get out of the whole Toadstool thing they backed themselves into.
This is Nintendo being smug.
Everybody counted them out, both in terms of PSP vs. DS and Wii vs. all. Said Mario Party was a tired series. Said Wii Play wasn't good. Said Pokemon was played out.
Look now. Not only are they dominating, but they're doing it at levels that they themselves set 20 years ago.
It's the ultimate example of a "middle finger" to the gaming press and public, and, quite frankly, they earned the right to do it.
@mowh: I HAVE done everything to her.
You're all Mario-caliber heroes in my book.
Now I'm not one to brag, but some of the top games of this month happen to feature someone very pretty and popular - me!
Hooray! <3
@Phoenicks: very true.
am I the only one who thinks peach is a whore? She shows signs of being attracted by luigi, mario and even sometimes bowser! whats next? Snake in super smash bros. brawl? or pit? or meta-knight? LOL
anyways poor umbrella, seems to be suffering a lot. I know where it prefers being at...
Awwww! That's great.
@rateoforange: I'd recommend Super Princess Peach; presumably you can get it cheap by now (used or whatever). It was a good game (even if Nintendo apparently outsourced it) - easy but that doesn't make it worse... admittedly, perhaps most of the reason for it being good was just the cute factor, but still :)
So... next month's email from Mario? Wario? Bowser? :)
aww~
Yay for Peach ^_^
It would even be cooled if Nintendo would conjure up a video version where a CG Peach reads up the press release. They have a US/english seiyuu for Peach right?
Either way: cuuuuuute ^_^
I just wish she had hotter/less gear than in Strikers. In which she still looks hot mind you =)
Why does this press release sound like a geeky letter to the press from Paris Hilton?
Isn't Peach a princess, frickin' ROYALTY? Have some dignity, bitch!
"It's no surprise that Nintendo has been kicking ass and taking names over the past year with the Wii and the DS."
Actually, many people, including some of the editors here at Kotaku, probably find that quite suprising given all the nay-saying and doom-mongering floating over Nintendo's head a few years ago.
@Johnny_Under: For real. Is Flynn crazy or something? Those letters from Peach are nothing but bad luck.
@Volcan: HAHA... well I heard something similar as well... but only in my own head. Are we crazy?
Peach has gotten cheap and lazy. Her letters used to involve P-Wings and the promise of cake.
@BigChiefSmokem: She certainly has gotten more so over the years, hasnt she?
You're my favorite, Peach!
You know, other than Princess Zelda.
Don't tell her!! She's just gonna think I'm catty now.
This would be cute if I didn't just know a guy wrote that entire thing. Getting cutesy messages from girls is only acceptable if a girl actually wrote it. Anyone who's played WoW knows exactly what I'm talking about!! (Don't trust the Night Elves!)
I heard the cutesy voice too.
Super Princess Peach almost certainly contained brainwashing. After finishing the game, I felt a strange urge to make myself a pink fluffy case for my DS. And I did.
What, a letter from Peach and no P-Wing or Kuribo's shoe? Not even a measly Raccoon Leaf? I think we've been gypped.
@Yoko_Yasha:
That just means she's a tease/flirt not a whore (a lot of girls flirt even with guys they aren't really interested in), plus she's only ever baked a cake for mario.
yeah. the peach toadstool thing reminds me of dr. "eggman" robotnik. i hate when they dont get it right in both areas.. it doesnt make sense.
Peach is MINE!
I will disembowel you ALL with a wooden cooking spoon before you'll ever have her!
@jjmusicman29 and Scyen:
You shut your filthy mouths! Little fuckers...
...
Oh, excuse me...did I say something?
Um...yes, adorable letter! *ahem*
@Ping:
best post here. You win the intrawebs
I want to hear from Wario!
I went and looked it up on wiki and apparently she was called Peach in the US as early as Yoshi's Safari. But it didn't catch on...
Yoshi's Safari was a fun game. I wish I had a Super Scope today, just so I could put that thing on my shoulder. I'd probably go out in public with it, too.
Oh yeah, and about Super Princess Peach, I preordered that and got it when it came out... The game is alright. Probably better than I expected, but after you beat it, they send you back through it to get all the extras, which killed it for me. I'm a bit of a Peach fan ever since SSBM. Her floating and turnips especially have helped me to eliminate my friends. I'm really, REALLY hoping she comes back in Brawl for more turnip/floaty action.
@Konatsu:
I HAVE carried one out in public. I've worn a Power Glove in public, too. In the last year, mind you. :P
@Ping:
Ditto.
@baberg:
Yes. Yes it does. It's Rule #34. There are no exceptions.
@Iceman_B:
Yes, she has an English voice actor. And if my memory serves me right, Mario games have always had English voice acting, even in the Japanese versions. While there might have been a few minor changes here and there (i.e. Mario & Co. saying "Super Mario USA!" instead of "Super Mario 2!" in the first GBA port), but it's been mostly the same.
Has Bowser captured Peach again? Is their some sort of secret code in the letter that only Mario can understand? Someone, hurry -- Peach is in trouble!
@Yoko_Yasha: Why are females whore when they feel attracted by more than one man? As a man, I routinely feel attracted by all kinds of chicks, and I don't think Im a whore :-)
