Ad: God of War II Coming to PSP

smgowmanual2rg0.jpg

A 1Upper landed an early copy of the retail version of God of War II. As a source told us last week, the instruction manual has an advertisement for God of War for the Playstation Portable on back cover.

The ad shows the familiar God of War symbol with PSP written in the middle of it and Coming 2007 underneath.

Unless someone happened to photoshop what a different tipster told us a week ago, this rumor sounds like it is confirmed. If it's true you can bet on the official unveiling coming at GDC next week. It sounds like Sony is going to be belting out a lot of interesting and exciting news at this year's event.

  • Another game better played on a home console for the PSP! Great!

  • Better not be a port of the original or the second game...

  • It seems photoshopped. A) The back of a game case isn't usually advertising for another game. B) The front says "2 disc set." Kotaku already confirmed it would only be one disc.

  • Ooooh, very nice. Looking forward to this very much.

Incidentally, is the RSS feed broken at the moment to anyone else...?

  • @Optimistic Prime: A: It's not the back of the game case, it's the back of the instruction manual. B: The game is on the first disc, extra content is on the second.

  • You could at least check the source and check your facts before accusing it of Photoshop.

  • How will this play on the PSP? That system just cripples platformers. There's no possible way it can control as smoothly as its big brother.

  • I don't know about anyone else, but the right analog stick is pretty much the only way I can fight effectively in God of War.

This could be good if it's a different game with different controls for the PSP, but then will it actually be God of War?

  • yeah, my psp is getting plenty of love with MLB 07 and I'm pretty stoked about After Burner coming soon, but God of War on PSP? For as much as I love that series I don't want it crippled or diminished by lack of a second analog stick...

  • It's being done by the same team that did Daxter so it has a pretty good chance of being more than just OK.

When that site first went up a couple weeks ago the screen turned blood red and "Coming Soon" appeared in the God of War font. Now it still turns red but the coming soon font was changed to some innocuous bubble lettering.

I guess Sony threatened to blackball them.

  • Yeah, I read about skullivan...nevertheless, I hope the GOW PSP game isn't a game so much as it's a digital comic like the MGS one. I think that would be very cool and a way to tell a bit more about the awesome story of Kratos and build the mythology of the game world as it ramps up to the PS3 God of War 3 release...at least I can dream, right?

  • It will be fine on the the psp, since in God of War you dont control the camera. I hope its a new game and not a port, knowing sony and their desire to boost demand for the psp, im betting its a new game.

  • That shits real, and I'll be the first to call it.

    :P

  • The psp getting a port from a ps2 game? This is completly unheard of =O.

  • I was wondering how many people would post here knowing that they don't like/care for the PSP or the GoW series or outright hate Sony altogether...imagine that, just the first post and you have a winner.

Yes, it might be a port or it may suck or etc etc. It's getting tiresome sifting through crap like that just to read some useful information.

If you don't like it, why post on it in the first place? To change other people's minds? yeesh...

Seriously, If you don't like the system/game or whatever please don't post useless rehashed griping/flame-baiting or whatever.
    It's useless.

Like the time I had to wear a condom so I wouldn't impregnate my harem. I didn't account for my super-semen...

  • Oh and so I won't be a part of just what I posted above.

I hope this game is good! (for Sony's sake).

  • @excaliburps:

    I own a PSP.

I shouldn't be able to express my distaste for the current trend with PSP games to be nothing more than spin offs or ports of PS2 games, because it damages your delicate sensibilities?

    Get over yourself.

  • Even if this is true, the game will just be hampered by a bad control scheme, just like many other PS2 to PSP translations.

  • Well, the camera is static, and all the right stick does is lets you dive out of the way, so the control scheme won't be all that hosed...

  • As a huge fan of David Jaffe's... i often visit his blog.

he hasnt mentioned this game yet, but i suspect that we will find some interesting information regarding the PSP title on his blog, soon after GDC.

As for the people who are posting about how this is just another port... considering it will most likely be made by Ready At Dawn, i bet that just like daxter, this will be an entirely original game.

...does anyone remember the rumour about a GOW game based on kratos brother? seems like a nice fit to me?

  • Why is Kotaku assuming this is God of War II? It could be, but it could be a brand new game entirely. All we have is the GoW symbol. There's no II anywhere. Title should read: AD: God of War Coming to PSP.

  • @crecente:

    Is it a DVD9 or DVD5?

  • Thanks Kotaku, for your shameless hit-grabber. Nowhere on that package do i see a II.

    GoW PSP :: Gow II
    Halo Wars :: Halo 3

  • Cool, this means I can dust off my PSP and actually use it for something.

  • has any company come up with a thumbstick attachment for the PSP? I know theres a few one-offs made by private individuals but nothing at retail.

  • @Cell9Song:

Nope, not yet. But there are a lot of tutorials on how to make your own. Doesn't look to hard...Not like I would try though :P.

  • Pretty sweet. I have a PSP, haven't used it in a very, very long time. While I never played God of War, it obviously seems to be a great series so maybe I'll finally be able to play a good game for the PSP. This is going to be a legendary moment. *takes PSP and blows dust off it* Ahhh....

  • *drooooooling*

  • This is my story, I'm the 1upper mentioned in the above article.

While I can understand the concerns many have, Sony is far beyond the port mentality. Actually, when you look at the history of SCEA developed titles for the PSP, you'll be hard-pressed to find a single port. Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Ape Escape and Socom amongst many, are all original titles...

...yet for some reason people are so quick to point out that the easy/lazy approach so many of our 3rd party devs took over the first year, were (for the most part), sloppy ports.

Rest assured God of War will be a unique story that will most likely fit seamlessly into the entire mythos. I would love to see a prequel, afterall, we have 10 years of Kratos pre-God of War I, post family murder to deal with. What happened in those long years prior to throwing himself off the highest Mountain in Olympus?

  • sarshelyam!

nice to see your post. i agree, sony has done a very good job of getting original games from the blockbuster series that made the playstation brand what it is.. dont forget the gta series has also created two unique gta games for the psp, with another potentially on the way!

i think that theres a lot of sony-bashers on kotaku.. which is unfortunate, considering its one of the best game sites on the web, if not THEE best.

i like your idea for a prequel as well!
