Halo DS Was An "Unsolicited Pitch"

Finally, we can put "Halo DS" to bed. There's been rumours, "proof" and heresay flying around the place for years now, culminating in this week's "footage" of the game. Thankfully, during his little chat with Crecente earlier today, Bungie's Community and Franchise Director Brian Jarrard clears up the whole mess once and for all:

This rumor has been circulating for a while and as you know we even saw some real life screens and assets this week. Ultimately it's up to Microsoft to decide if and when they take Halo to a different platform. That particular demo was in fact created and I believe it was an unsolicited pitch a long time ago but nothing ever came of it.
Done. Finished. It may have been "real" in the sense you could touch it. But not real in the sense it had nothing to do with Bungie, and was little more than elaborate, digital fan mail.

  • I still believe is fake....

  • They got the game from golden eye and patched to look like halo.

  • That quote doesn't read to me as it was fan created, but that it was something Bungie did and either did or thought about submitting to Nintendo. The unsolicited part being that Nintendo or MS or whoever didn't ASK the Bunge to make it...

  • Ultimately it's up to Microsoft to decide if and when they take Halo to a different platform.

    Fanboys, start your engines.....

  • @Video: It is, and isn't.
It is real in that, it was made and pitched to MS.
It is fake in that it holds as much legitimacy as a homebrew game.

  • @Video: No, it ain't fake, but yes, it's a patched Goldeneye. That's what it comes down to- EA approached Microsoft with the possibility of a DS Halo, and knew they would likely be turned down, so they skimped on the money, and just made a few small changes to Goldeneye for their demo. The Warthog likely did not work at all, for instance.

  • @Video: did you read the article before posting? The guys from Bungie said it was real, but it never went anywhere...

  • @Dangeresque: Forgot to put a disclaimer- that statement is not necessarily fact, it's just what probably happened. An educated guess, as it were.

  • @lotkrota: well my first language is spanish so maybe i mistaken if you say so....

  • Another thing... I never play Halo so do not get scare...

  • Has anyone ever honestly bought this?

  • I don't even get the controversy. Somebody put together a rough version of Halo for the DS hoping ot get dev/publishing rights. Microsoft said no. What's so hard to understand about this?

  • @BrainofJTD: If the game would be focused on online multiplayer only, no campaing only multiplayer, and using the full power of the ds and all the storage capacity in the ds cart, it would be a huge hit for the ds...

  • @TOCATL: I believe that too Tocalt.... but when you want to play alone you can add bots in your multiplayer....

  • @Video: Its posible, its been done before, quake3 in the pc was a multiplayer only game with option to use bots with AI for single player...

  • @TOCATL: I know that, I used to play Quake 3 Arena.... those where the times.... but you understand what i mean because a game that only can be play online or lan multiplayer without bots will not sell at all...

  • @TOCATL:

Well, sure it would. Doesn't mean it's even conceivably possible. Not now.

  • Probably one of the reasons Bungie broke the shackles.

Now the can come up with new IPs and make new games for the DS or whatever platform they want. But no MS IPs.
    HaloDS buried.

  • Hmm... I dont know, the DS doesn't really strike me as the most loving of homes for a multiplayer only FPS.

And Master Chief on a Nintendo platform? It would be like having Sonic and mario in the same game on a Nintendo console.. or uhm.. Crash Bandicoot whoring itself all over the.. every pla.. hmm.. Sony really needs to get a mascot...

Ah! Or like having that high resolution Helghast guy fighting the uhm.. covenant in coop.. ah I give up

  • It was an unsolicited fix. Much like the early build of that Ghostbusters title for the 360 by Zootfly.

  • Well someone transfer the rom then if its non-commercial I can load it up on my DS as homebrew.

  • @mustang: So Microsoft owns the Halo IP and not Bungie now that they've split... Interesting.

  • @serotoninzero: Probably not the place to be talking about roms dude...

  • Hopefully MS considers releasing this.

  • @serotoninzero: If the uncut version on manhunt2 leaked to the internetz, its possible that this "demo" will follow the same road...

  • "elaborate, digital fan mail."

Bull. When he said unsolicited he meant Bungie or Microsoft didn't ask for it to be made. A third party developer approached them with the idea of bringing it to the DS and knocked up a model. (Which happens all the time, thats why he called it a "pitch") MS said no and "nothing ever came of it". It wasn't made by a fan. Its OK. This vindicates you. You don't have to admit you were wrong. Like you said its finished.

  • Yeah, do it MS! Make the DS your handheld!

    Halo for DS!

  • Actually Microsoft approached multiple dev teams about creating Halo DS. You'd know this if you visited a real news site, like IGN (which this whole mess originated from).

    Sourcing FTW.

  • @sdr309: Yeah, it was probably the Rogue Agent thing. RARE, then?

  • @bernbaum: rom rom rom rom rom rom rom rom rom kotakuites rom

i agree with serotonin.. no major backers means we should find it and try it

  • Doesn't mean they won't ever make it. And if I had to guess, I'd say they one day will. It just makes sense.

  • Rumor starting:

    Marathon remake for PS3
    Halo Wars DS

  • @CaptainHarrison: Maybe for the Nintendo QS or SPSPS. That Nintendo Quad-Screen is really something...But the Super Playstation Portable Slim is pretty wicked in the graphics department. Almost as good as 360.

  • It looked like garbage. Why did the soldiers look nothing like the MJOLNIR armor? No way that came from inside Bungie, for sure.

  • Image of DaveKap DaveKap at 01:37 AM on 10/06/07 *

With the death of one rumor, in comes another.

My friend has Halo on his cell phone. I'm not joking either. I'll send photos to tips if he lets me.

And no, I'm really not joking... though I won't explain why he has Halo on his phone... yet. ;-)

  • @bernbaum: No no, if its not commercial, it shouldn't be a problem.

  • its actually real I worked at a publisher that MS actually was willing to sell the lic to with a few other games.

We got all 3 and then one fine day MS pulled Halo and gave us something else

the something else came out and did pretty well in sales.

  • @bernbaum:

MS already owned Halo. Bungie didn't want to be a Halo farm anymore, hence the current situation.

  • I'm all about seeing Halo on the DS, but there's no need to make it an FPS that could never match the console versions. Make it a turn-based strategy, a side-scroller, or a shooter (while driving the warthog or other vehicle). And make it in the Halo universe, but not starring the 117. I'd probably buy that game. My DS hasn't been turned on in months..

  • I would like to see Microsoft change Zune to compete with the DS/PSP. The PSP is one of the best devices to come out in a while but it is plagued by lack of attention from the developers and Sony (and the DS does not have the resolution or horsepower for a killer fps app). It is a great portable media player but it does not have any killer fps games. A Halo type game on one of these portable gaming devices would be a big seller. It is too bad Microsoft does not have a device and does not want Bungie to develop for Sony/Nintendo.

  • @crewwolfy:
Get Zelda then or Sonic Rush maybe O.o

  • Wow, the whole internet, including Kotaku, and people still don't want to admit they got owned by Matt c. Come on people.

''proof'', lol. little more than elaborate, digital fan mail, omg. Kotaku, please, STFU, you guys got owned and still won't admit it. This proof of concept was not developed by somebody in his garage. Like Craig Harris from IGN stated, there were several studio's making a Halo DS concept to show MS. Why is this hard to believe?

Halo = cashmoney, DS game = cashmoney. Halo x DS game = cashmoney in the shape of a stairway to heaven. These articles about halo DS on kotaku are only meant to discredit Matt C. and save Kotaku's ass because they laughed at the idea of a Halo DS game.

There are people out there that want to make this happen, some of them are EA who allready had an FPS engine working on DS.

  • If it was released as Goldeneye DS reskinned I'd be curious to see reactions of fans and the gaming press. I bet the exact same game would get much higher scores and be much more loved just because it's Halo.

  • Hm as much as i'd like to see Halo Wii (note the sarcasm), I have a feeling that despite the fact Bungie developed Halo, it's still MS property.

If I want any company to become independant from Microsoft, it's Rare, even though Microsoft quite literally owns their asses.

  • @2811: Hmm, from what little I've followed this Halo DS business, I agree with 2811.

IGN and Matt C got fucking *blasted* all up and down the net for getting/telling this story. And sticking to it. Which -- it seems -- turned out to be true.

The amount of shit Matt C and IGN got for this, only to get blasted *again* with posts like this ("proof", little more than fanmail, etc.)...

Feel compelled to shit on the story for not being anywhere near it? Sour grapes?

I like this site and I could be wrong, but from where I sit you're (Kotaku) cooking fucking weaksauce with this slant on the story.

  • @2811: You are completely missing the point of all this. Kotaku is not discounting the existence of this piece of software or that it was pitched to Bungie/Microsoft. Bungie has said on several occasions previously that they have been pitched Halo DS. However, just because another developer creates a demo concept doesn't make it Halo DS. For the product to be truly Halo DS, it would have to have the backing of Microsoft. If this weren't the case, any modder/homebrew programmer could just make the program and claim Halo DS is real. For example, there is a Metroid-like mod being built on the source engine. That doesn't mean that Nintendo is now making PC games. Neither does the Ocarina of Time mod for the Halo PC engine. As long as all that happened with this concept was it was shown to Bungie/Microsoft and they rejected it, Halo DS is no more legitimate than any user made mod.

  • Much ado about nothing.

  • @mrplow1817:

Not so, "little more than elaborate, digital fan mail." certainly sounds like a lot of discounting. From what Bungie are saying it seems as though the game was made (by a developer) but never got past the point of showing the game to Microsoft. To me, that sounds like the game was very much real at one point but never game to fruition - similar to the originally planned Sonic game with fish-eye view for the Sega Saturn.

Can we just leave it at, "the game existed but didn't get approved by Microsoft" instead of this sorry excuse for a lot of arse covering from those in the industry that both doubted and ridiculed IGN and Matt C?

  • Digital fan mail? Really?

Kotaku, I thought you were better than that.

  • There ARE other big companies besides Bungle, you know, and it´s quite obvious that that game is not made by Bungie. Now, really, that IGN guy, or Bungie? Should I believe them? or Kotaku? err... which source is valid?

But following the logic of every single geek around the globe related to that fake or real issue, I will state this: Everthing around me, specially those on the internet, can be fake If I don´t touch it, and look by myself. Simples as that.

Lets put on wikipedia on every single article this "THIS SOURCE ISN´T VALID SINCE I DIDN´T SEE IT BY MYSELF - JOE"... I just must ASSUME that the article on wikipedia about anything is real? Or your momma?

Meh, you guys must assume that this comment doesn´t exists either. It´s probably a fake comment by some fake IGN guy trying to fakelly piss off someone who probably doesn´t exists either, if he says hello on a video on youtube, it´s probably a CG mixed with a cosplayed hired person.

It HAS been done before, so surely it´s possible, so surely it´s REAL??

I think I´ll let my brain explode now, see ya.

  • Kotaku may have some historical beef with Matt C. that (in their opinion) justifies the treatment they did with this article, but I have to agree that Matt seems to have the better track record on this issue than anyone else has. Kudos to him for that. Regarding whatever he did to Kotaku's mom/sister/daughter....well I just don't know about that.

  • Stop kidding yourself people, NIntendo would never do this and you know it.
