At Microsoft's big pre-TGS presser in Japan today, some new and upcoming Xbox Live Arcade games were announced. One of them, you may find interesting. IT'S REZ. Rez HD, as it's tentatively called, is a shiny new port of the Dreamcast original, and is due in Q1 2008. Mizuguchi:
We are excited to announce that Rez will be given a new life, this time in digital form. The game will be presented in hi-definition and will be accessible to thosewho did not have a chance to experience Rez the first time around. Personally, Rez has been and will always be a lifelong concept. I hope to take what I learned from the experience of creating the original game and look forward to taking it to a whole new level in the future.Rez in 5.1 on a big HD screen? Best news in a long time. Screens are in the gallery below, and you can read on for the to-the-point press release.
Tokyo, Japan (Sept. 12, 2007) - Tokyo-based video game developer Q Entertainment, Inc. today announced that the critically acclaimed video game title "Rez" is being developed for the Xbox LIVE Arcade with a target release date of Q1 2008. Originally released by SEGA in Japan in 2001 for the Dreamcast and PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, followed by a North American release only for the PlayStation 2 and European release on both platforms in early 2002, Rez was developed by SEGA's United Game Artists ("UGA") division. Tetsuya Mizuguchi, former president of UGA and current chief creative officer of Q Entertainment, conceptualized and produced the fast-action shooter, which is known to be one of the most unique, offbeat and eccentric games ever released.
"We are excited to announce that Rez will be given a new life, this time in digital form," said Mizuguchi. "The game will be presented in hi-definition and will be accessible to those who did not have a chance to experience Rez the first time around. Personally, Rez has been and will always be a lifelong concept. I hope to take what I learned from the experience of creating the original game and look forward to taking it to a whole new level
in the future."

Inevitable Halo 3 Trance Vibrator alert!
Please, oh, please come Stateside!
My wife wants a official microsoft branded wireless trance vibrator. This way we both win.
...Must have... NOW!
until i a) learn what that square game's about (does it even have a wiki?) or b) rent sigma and see what the fuss is about, since i didnt seem to catch it from black, im thinking this was the best news of the presser, personally.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh man. This will be glorious if we actually get it. I never got to play the full game, with my PS2 not reading blue disks and all.
The funny thing is the game could sell at 5000 points, and still be a bargain compared to the hard copy prices right now.
DO WANT!
Oh wow, this'll defiantely be a best seller for XBL Arcade.
We must have it!
Since it's just a port, I doubt I'll be buying it. I loved it on the PS2 though.
@Lord_The_Night_Knight:
Agreed. Hopefully being on live will help support the need for a sequal.
On XBOX?... /cry
Not on PS3!...../joy
@MrCrumpet: harsh.
If you don't own it yet, GET THIS. Rez is awesome.
Huzzah! Another great game!
The original Trance Vibrator is a USB device. How hard would it be to make the Live Arcade version of them game support it? (Yeah, it'd be wired, but so what? ^.^ )
Crap, to many vibrator comments already! Though it would be very nice of them to include support for the USB Trance Vibrator that was already released for it since I have one already.
I'm sure with the support this would be another Live arcade game that the girlfriend would spend hours playing every day. Wait... maybe that's not such a good thing...
@MrCrumpet:
hey hey...im sure no ps3 fanboys would be rubbing it in....right....right....right?
@MrCrumpet:
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't stuff like that ban-worthy? Blatant fanboyism and flame-bait stuff...well, man...that's just mean.
Rez in HD? And on 360?
Well that along with the on/off exclusivity of Beautiful Katamari and Rez's little brother E4 (Every Extend Extra Extreme), is just the right kind of lure to get me to buy a 360.
Sure wish it came in a box though, to sit it next to my 3 copies of Rez, and Trance Vibrator.. ^_^
Rez Waggle on Wii confirmed.
Fuck Ninja Gaiden 2, this is a far cooler announcement.
@Archaotic: I dunno, people have been talking about Capcom 'killing' Devil May Cry by making it multiplatform and nothing happened, and that seemed like flame-bait to me.
Guys, some new information on Rez HD: I have a geek boner. Sorry, no shots.
I was never a big fan of Rez, but this is kinda cool. I mean, the Xbox 360 seems to be getting a lot good games from PS2 and Gamecube.
@McWhertor: Dude, I only just woke up and did not need that image. I'll be haunted by that all day at work now. Thanks
@McWhertor: Would it be witty meta-humor to nominate that for Hyper-Multi-Tap?
I came.
Even without the help of the Trance Vibrator!
I hope I'm not the only one who, upon seeing this post, exclaimed "Holy fucking shit!" out loud. But if I am, let it be known: Rez HD. Holy fucking shit.
@McWhertor:
whats up man you didnt make it too TGS??
this AND ikaruga :D
I think i just fainted.
Well, I will be buying a 360 tomorrow.
Oh joy, Rez and Ikaruga announcements! I already have Rez on the PS2 but will be sure to get it again anyways.
So, how'd they get around the 150MB Live Arcade file size limits? Please tell me you don't have to purchase "areas 1-5" individually...
@darkowl:
they increased the size a long time ago..i think 250 mbs
@darkowl: I don't think that Microsoft is really enforcing that limit anymore, provided your game isn't filled with FMV or any other unnecessary things that take up space. Certainly not for games as high-profile (relatively) as Rez and Ikaruga. With their recent moves towards considering the hard drive a required part for the development process, I don't think they'll really have a serious problem with the size constraints of these games.
@darkowl: @Snukadaman_: if im not mistaken, Rez was only like 250MB or something incredibly small, too.
@TheIrishNinja:
hey you still got your petition for katamari...ill sign it just for you man...
@TheIrishNinja:
and compression techniques have greatly evolved :)
1) Dreamcast version is god and win and sex all rolled up together(never tried the PS2 version).
2) It needs the trance vibrator.
3) Said trance vibrator needs online multiplayer compatibility. That way you can "play" with your friends, across the internet.
HD cam support would be good, too.
@Snukadaman_: haha...its on its way now, so i gotta find a new cause to bitch about.
top of the list? getting Hal to work on the next Earthbound.
Higher resolution is nice, I guess, but 5.1? For what? None of the music supports it, enemies, as far as I recall, make noise only when shot, and that happens always in front of you. Going as far as saying, HD upgrade does absolutely nothing to this game, unless they really add some 5.1 music. But it doesn't need to do, as long as more people buy it there might be another one coming. That game is a masterpiece.
@TheIrishNinja: Double that and you are correct. I transferred mine to PS2 USB HDD at one point when I thought it would save me the hassle of changing discs every time I want to play something, turned out to be useless. Anyways, it was something like 400-500MB, CD game regardless.
Acid sales will increase ever so slightly.
Man, first Sin and Punishment and now this. Are game companies trying to ruin the rare overpriced game selling community? *hugs copy of Secret of Mana 3*
@daschupa:
Rez stopped being rare a long time ago. There have been reprints from Game Quest (they reprint a lot of rare/uncommon games). That's why you can still find Rez in EB and gamestop. They even reprint old snes games.
I'm going to buy Rez a dozen times on all my friends' Xboxes. It will be that worth it. Excitement is quite high.
Just a wee bit of dry humor guys and gals.
No harm ment, no harm done right.
I think I just Rezzed my pants.
High Rez? :P
Here's the 1st game that I really REALLY want to buy from the XBLA.
MMmmmfff!! *stifles girly yelp of glee* It'll be worth replacing the disc version just for it's HD-ness. For me, this was the announcement of the M'soft presser.
@SilverStar95:
i don't think MS will support cyberdildonics...
@baberg: Just a port?! Did ou read the HD and digital 5.1 sound part? You better crawl back to the hole you came out.
@icepick314: and the inevitable 18/AO rating
THERE IS A GOD!
Rez in 5.1! Don't be daft..
Rez with Headphones FTW!
good to see this REZurrected.
> __ >
I came. GOD I love Rez. The music melding with the gameplay to make a great game.
It is THE game you bring out at a party to get everyone's attention.
@daschupa: Man, first Sin and Punishment and now this. Are game companies trying to ruin the rare overpriced game selling community?
The game's not rare. It was re-released a year or two ago, and there is absolutely no difference between a first-run copy and a reissue (I have one of each).
Wow!
I wonder how much the code will be extended, music will be added(5.1) etc.
If I'm not mistaking the PS2 version already had some form of surround audio.
@baberg: You wouldn't get it because it's a port? you know the PS2 version is a port too, right?
Oh YES, now if only the Trance Vibrator would work.
