Adorable Frenchmen Jeux France have run what they reckon is a "credible" rumour. Well, rumours, because there's a few, and they all involve Nintendo. Seems at this year's E3 we'll not only get firm release dates for Smash Bros and Mario Galaxy, we'll also get a "grosse révélation au niveau Hardware" [big hardware news] as well as a look at Mario Kart for the Wii.
The release dates, we expect those, and the big hardware news could be anything, so we'll leave that well alone. But the Mario Kart thing? Feels right to me. We're about due some more Mario Kart, particularly since it's one of the last big Nintendo franchises we're yet to see anything of on the Wii.
Oh, and kids, remember, these are rumours. Take your salt.
Mario Kart Wii annoncé à l'E3 ? [Rumeur] [Jeux France]

Mario Kart Wii? hmmm... Now that might get me to buy one. might.
New hardware? That's got me confused a bit. It's way too early for the fabled "Wii 2.0" and there's definitely no need for a newer, revised DS quite yet. Maybe it's Virtual Boy 2.0 or something.
Am I the only guy who has yet to see a Wii for sale?
Local store got another 40 this Tuesday, sold out by noon as usual...
I only use salt to rub in the wounds of fanboys of any console.
anyhoo...I'd love to see a new Kart game, especially with the Wii controls, since there are a lot of ways that it could be implemented. I can see either tilt-to-turn, like ExciteTruck, or turning using the analog stick and using the wiimote to do attacks left/right, burst, and shoot your special.
Not sure which sounds better, really, because I think without the nunchuk, there are less new moves you could add. 'course...it's Mario Kart, so who needs new? I just wanna hit people with blue shells.
Gameboy Evolution Please. Something Traditional from Nintendo.
pff. Like that'll ever happen. Traditional and Nintendo don't go together anymore.
@phinehas:
If there were a full color HMD that was light and didn't kill your eyes, and it would play Wii games and connect to other HMDs... I'd welcome a virtual boy 2.0. I'm one of the ten people on earth who didn't hate the virtual boy, though... You know, except it's lack of games and red color that killed your eyes...
WiiHD add-on that lets you upscale Wii output to 1080p?
Wii3D add-on that lets you play your Wii in a whole new dimension?
WiiII, the successor to the Wii to be seen in 3 years?
To be honest, it's more like a new color for the DS Lite that will cause everyone to think they need to buy a new one. That's always been Nintendo's strategy, and it's always worked somehow.
Maybe we'll see some multicolored Wiis by that same logic.
Not sure about the hardware rumor, but remember that Nintendo always wanted DS to be a "third pillar," not a replacement for the gameboy. That said, I can't imagine them shooting themselves in the foot and essentially competing with their own juggernaut.
Is Sony making a Blu-Ray add-on drive for thw Wii?
LOL
maybe it will be the wii with the DVD player that they plan on selling in Japan. Either that or as Helio writes, probably some new color DS. A DQ or Zelda special edition one or something.
I hope it's some new peripherals for the Wii.
YCS
Well, at this point, any new hardware they unveil for the first time would probably be more than a year off. The DS and Wii are still selling faster than Nintendo can manufacture them, though, so I don't see why they'd want to unveil something that could potentially convince interested buyers to wait for newer hardware.
As for Mario Kart on the Wii: Hell, yes! :) Maybe they'll go the way of Smash Brothers and start adding in characters from all the Nintendo franchises now, though.
I wonder if Mario Kart will control with the steering wheel style ala "Excite Truck". That'd be an interesting departure.
We haven't seen F-Zero or Star Fox on Wii yet, either...
@KLind:
A new gameboy? As if they need an even tighter grasp on the balls of handheld gaming? They'd only be competing with themselves.
Though, I suppose this would be an interesting time to come out and reveal that Nintendo cell phone idea from a little ways back...
First point: Mario Kart Double Dash 2!!- Don't miss this opportunity, Nintendo, show all those naysayers how novel the 2 player concept was. Especially with the Wii. Imagine having to aim and shoot shells with the Wiimote. Nintendo's got some good engineers: they could make it work this time. Also, imagine a game where the back player isn't really worthless. If they doubled or tripled item availability it would keep both players adequately interested. We already got the definitive single player experience with Mario Kart DS, why not try again?
:sigh: Nobody will ever read the above paragraph :(
Second point: Mario Kart, Double Dash or not, may be coming a little too soon for the Wii. Sure it's just an announcement... fine, a rumor, but they've already got the big 3 this year, maybe they can start showing us the original IPs they were talking about, hmm?
Third Point: With no news ever on Animal Crossing, you guys had better be working on a revolutionary entry in the franchise. Animal Crossing has seen only one real release, 2 if you count Wild World as a game other than the original. I want full 3D and camera controlling, please.
I would say the release dates thing would be fairly obvious. But after what happened at Nintendo's Gamer's Day, I am skeptical about important things from Nintendo. It is probably time for them to announce the Wii Mario Kart. Probably won't get it until like April or May of '08 though...
mother 4 with waggle-sensitive wireless frying pan?
Animal Crossing Dammit!
I can't wait for a Wii Mario Kart, especially after the disappointment that was Mario Kart: Double Dash. If there is new "hardware" I would assume it's more colors for the Wii and/or light gun peripherals, since I have a feeling the Wii will bring back the light gun age to home consoles.
Im assuming the hardware will be a hard drive attachment. Guitar hero 3 with no hard drive would suck they couldnt do microtransations to death like everyone else.
Ugh, rumors suck. It's fun to speculate, but some people take them a little too seriously and then get disappointed (or upset) when they don't come to fruition.
DVD Wii. A black/onyx Wii that plays DVDs. Called it. ;D
Really, what else would they announce? Nothing major, obviously. Their current hardware is doing just fine.
But yeah, Mario Kart, F-Zero, Star Fox, Animal Crossing, Kirby, Pikmin and Yoshi still don't have anything announced for the Wii yet.
@Gamemaster:
No full 3d camera control in Animal Crossing. Sorry. It's a nongamer game, so the controls will ALWAYS be simple, as much as the rest of us would love a fully immersive, motion sickness causing environment. :/
Wii 2.0? I'll throw mine through the wall if this is true. Yeah, where is Animal Crossing Wii?!?
If this rumour turns out to be true, I doubt it would be either the Wii 2 or a new Gameboy. Those wouldn't make sense financially.
Remember that patent they filed for a phone a while back? If this turns out to be true, and they announce some new hardware, I bet it will be some sort of gaming/phone mix. This way they could have the 3 pillars they were aiming for, and have access to a huge market that they are not yet in. Perhaps iPhone meets NGage? :P
Not, Mario Kart Wii, but Mario Kart Brrrrrm
@Blinkstale: But, But, it's revolutionary!!
[cries in corner]
I bet it's this!

Hope the page works. :)
The new hardware is probably just going to be a new Wiimote peripheral. They did say there were going to be a ton of them a few years back.
And I'm so stoked for Mario Karting on the Wii.
I had a feeling I made the right choice to buy only a Wii this generation of consoles. Every day that passes, I just keep getting reassured I did the right call.

" it's one of the last big Nintendo franchises we're yet to see anything of on the Wii."
rather have Star Fox wii. think about it kids.
Star Fox

win.
maybe something to do with this perhaps: http://gonintendo.com/?p=18850
Fortune's article about the Wiimote and a hidden audio translator....?! costs $2 aparently
It could be a more conventional controller to support driving games, outside of the classic controller...
MK with tilt controls would be terrible. And Wii mote on its side would be un-usable for MK
Is the rumor related to how Mario has dyed his hair, or has he always had a black moustache and eyebrows to go with his brown sideburns?
This would be great news if it was F-Zero instead of Mario Kart. Or better yet, Fire Emblem.
i vote for finaly another thing to connect your wiimote that isn't a nunchuck.. probably something that would work with the mario kart .. like a pedal or something
I'm saying multicolor Wii, new DS colors.
And@Gamemaster: Though I don't like Double Dash, I accept it's right to exist and thrive as a spin-off of Mario Kart proper. I hope this is the attitude they take. You want some yahoo on the back of your kart, I think it's ricoculus, but Mario Kart is a proud enough lineage for us both to be satisfied, I says.
@KraazyCraig:
it cost $2 for the N to put it into their wiimote.
I see a microphone attachment coming... Maybe Sega will announce Seaman 2!
New hardware is perhaps a harddrive?
SLI Wii or Wii 2. If we have learned anything from the DS lifespan, then we can expect a shorter hardware cycle. By the time PS4 rolls around I expect we will have gone through 3 Wiis revisions. Although it is probably that it could be a Wii with more eprom.
Obviously they are announcing the Onyx Black and Pearl Pink Wiis.
There's not gonna be wii 2 this fast, nor anything that improoves graphics, i belive. It isn't necesary for nintendo, since they are selling a lot. But maybe they are gonna announce the Wii with DVD player that they said it was gonna be sold this fall. I think they have to have a macrovision chip and a digital audio output to have the license to play DVDs. Maybe i'm wrong.
@Customreality: Yeah, I agree that the 'hardware' is going to be some form of add-on. The Wii Mic seems like an interesting bet.
Oh, oh, wait! I know! It's Starcraft II!
I see it now... a return to 1989 and the best Mario commercial ever gets a sequel for Mario Galaxy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiYr5FhhMe8
That would seriously kick ass!
Wow, I am honestly surprised that only one person mentioned the hard drive. Recently, it was in the air that Nintendo had made a deal with some mass storage company, or something along those lines.
With the increase in demand for downloadable content, and especially GHIII, a hard drive is almost common sense.
Let's see.
The hardware news will be an external hard drive support
I would like to see F-Zero more to the end of the Wii Life cycle when they are producing A+++ games.
Why hasn't anyone mentioned what they showed us last year at E3?
The one piece of hardware we've still yet to see...
Does anyone remember the Gunchuck?
What if the hardware rumour were, say, competitive on-line gameplay between similar DS and Wii titles, a la Xbox Live and Vista?
That do anything for ya?
@Customreality: Oops, you did refer to it. Apologies!
