Not Enough Wii Fits To Go Around, Says Reggie
Not that this will concern any/many of you, but hey, you might have some Christmas shopping to do for that special bored housewife in your life. According to Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo are going to struggle to put copies of Wii Fit on the shelf in time for Christmas.
With Wii hardware, I think we've got a good shot at meeting demand during the holidays. With 'Wii Fit,' I know we'll fall short. That's a product we have consumers lining up for each morning outside of our Nintendo World store [in New York City].
Wait, so people can get off their ass and line up in the cold for a copy of a video game, but they can't get off their ass and do their own exercise? What an amazing world we live in.

Nintendo Eyes User Generated Content, Says "Entertainment Is A Two-Way Street"
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime spoke at today's BMO Capital Markets Interactive Entertainment Conference, starting his presentation with a look at the landscape of the five most popular web sites in 1996. Fils-Aime pointed out that each was a search engine, "gathered and controlled by someone else."
"They were, essentially, the world's best library cards," he said. "But if you look at the top five most visited sites today, you'll find content composed almost entirely by users for the benefit of other users." This, Fils-Aime explained "is the game changer" for every form of entertainment. "As entertainment changes, we will keep pace," he said.
Fils-Aime pointed to four titles coming from Japan as new initiatives that focus specifically on user-generated content: Band Brothers Deluxe, Girls Mode, Nintendo DSi Moving Notepad and WarioWare Myself. More »

Reggie Not That Keen On Disaster: Day Of Crisis
Ever wonder why Disaster: Day of Crisis dropped off the map? Might be because it sucks. That's what Reggie's worried about, telling IGN that "he doesn’t think Disaster is a $50 game". Partly because the voice-over work and audio is "laughable". Good news for Americans is that Europe is being used as a guinea pig; if the game does well there (where it's already out), it'll be released in the US - presumably for less than $50 - if not, it won't be. Good to see Europe taking one for the team on this one!

The Nintendo Wii Still At One-Per-Person
There might be Wii shortages this holiday season. Even though Nintendo stated it is increasing supply, company president Reggie Fils-Aime advises, "Once you see it on the shelf, you ought to buy it.” A sign of the times, reader Heath sends us the above photo, writing:
It's funny how even two years after launch you're still not allowed to buy more than one Wii. In fact, this is only the fourth or fifth time I've seen Wiis for sale out in the wild since '06 — but that could just be the fact that I live out in the middle of the desert.
If only people knew that they'll most likely neglect the poor console after two months of Wii Sports...
What about where you live? Is it easy or difficult to locate Wiis? And one per-person? What gives?!

Nintendo Is Working On Something Better Than Wii HDD
Club Nintendo, the official Nintendo mag for Latin America, has interviews with Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and company exec Reggie Fils-Aime. According to translations from game site Go Nintendo, Miyamoto says there won't be any more peripherals — there's too many already. The game creator won't say if Wii Motion Plus will be in future Zelda games, but confirms what we already knew: They are working on new Zelda titles.
While Miyamoto says to expect an announcement about hard drive solutions in the future (but doesn't confirm an hard drive), Reggie says Nintendo is not making a hard drive and will come up with a better solution. Reggie also says a DS redesign is when sales go down, which seems to mean that we shouldn't get our hopes up at the present moment. Reggie also says that Animal Crossing is not casual and that the GTA DS game is for the core crowd. About Microsoft avatar, he adds that “copying is a way of flattering, so we’re very flattered.”
Hrm... Better solution than an actual hard drive? Why not, you know, just release a hard drive?

Nintendo Says "Thank You" For Watching Its E3 Press Conference
E3 2008 is over. Finished. But Nintendo hasn't forgotten and is sending out thank you notes, thanking folks for attending its presser. The letter reads: "THANK YOU for attending our E3 media briefing. Nintendo aims to bring people engaging experiences...to make them smile...and we hope we provided you at least a little of that during our event." Below that, it's signed by Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, vice president of corporate affairs Denise Kaigler and vice president of sales & marketing Cammie Dunaway. Regardless of what you thought of Nintendo's E3 press conference (eh...), classy of them to send out thank you notes.

Reggie Says Wii Storage Problem Goes Waaaay Beyond Geeks And Otaku
Sure, last month Nintendo Europe's Laurent Fischer said the Wii's storage problem was only affecting "geeks and otaku". But that was last month. This month? It's a big problem, one affecting not only the scum-sucking hardcore of Nintendo's murky cash tank, but one affecting everyone. Reggie explains:
From an Americas-centric perspective, here is the reality we see. We have a consumer base who loves virtual console. We have a userbase who really is enjoying WiiWare content. So for us really our challenge really is how do we satisfy all these consumers who are loving all of the product we make available on a download basis? As we continue to have things, as you point out, like ‘Mario Kart’ that has its own channel when you’re playing from an Internet perspective, we’re just making this challenge tougher and tougher. So in our view this is becoming much more of a mainstream problem, which is why we have a sense of urgency to solve it.
It's comforting to picture Nintendo HQ, deck chairs and money-counting machines upturned, as klaxons sound, tech teams scrambling to "solve" this problem before the Today Show starts complaining about it.

Nintendo's Reggie Would Love To See "Bottoms-Up" Wii GTA
Grand Theft Auto doesn't exactly leap into mind when you hear someone say "Nintendo 2.0". But new Nintendo is getting a GTA title, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, for the DS. Does that mean the Wii will get its own GTA? Says Nintendo of America honcho Reggie Fils-Aime:
All I can tell you is that since the day I walked in the door, I’ve had a very good relationship with the folks at Take Two, continue to have a good relationship. And so in our view we want just the best content coming on our platforms... You know, a GTA on the Wii is all based on what Rockstsar and Take Two want to do. And again, from our standpoint, if they build a bottoms-up game that takes advantage of what we do well, I’d love to see it on the platform.
And hey, why the heck not?

Just How Long Does A Wii Last On A Store Shelf, Anyways?
Can't be long. And according to Reggie, it's not long at all. Speaking with Wired, the NoA boss has said that despite North America receiving 40% of the global allocation of Wii consoles, the average console is sitting on a retail shelf for around an hour before it's swooped up, thrown into a basket with Wii Play, and carried out of the store. To Nintendo, that's a success story, but if you're still waiting for a Wii 17 months after launch, it's a pain in the ass. Will knowing Reggie is "passionately upset about the lack of product relative to demand" help ease your pain?
