1UP is running a feature on a diehard Xbox 360 fan's incredible run of bad luck, one that won't paint the console's hardware reliability in a remotely positive light. Justin Lowe, they report, is now on his twelfth Xbox 360, having sent eleven of those back to Microsoft for various repair issues. One of those allegedly even exploded (emphasis theirs and mine—I'm responsible for the bold).
Don't believe him? He's got audio proof of a phone call with an MS service rep who verifies his history of 360 troubles.
Despite these hardware setbacks, Lowe is still a fan, probably partially due to the company's efforts to compensate him for his inconvenience. Gotta say, if I were in his shoes, I'd be livid, demanding Peter Moore tattoo an apology to me on that left bicep.

well it doesn't really matter right?
things break from time to time right?
I mean the important thing is that we have really good customer service, and boxes lots and lots of boxes.......right?
Great customer service, means its ok to sell lemons.
Two of my coworkers had their xbox break in the last week.
I still love my 360 though.
God, I left Sony because my PS2 had so many issues, and the Xbox was damn near indestructible. Now it seems they've traded places, though I still love my 360 to death, and no problems yet (fingers crossed).
Things Break
They should sell 360's in a 6-pack. One dies, you throw it away and crack another one open.
I personally am on my 4th, soon to be 5th 360 since launch. Two for overheating, one defective harddrive and now my latest is scratching discs. I don't often have hardware issues, I'm never abusive and always mindful of cooling issues. I had my first PSOne for 5 years and my first PS2 for 6, and even my Wii and PS3 work without problem, but I'm very nearly swearing off the 360 because this kind of attrition is inexcusable. If you're still on your first then I'm glad for you, but people aren't just making these stories up, Microsoft still has very serious hardware issues to sort out.
Although mine broke, Im still happy with the fact that they replaced it... Although the one that I got back's disc tray doesn't come out so well. (Have to hit/tap the side of my 360 like 3 times before it opens.)
Is it me or did you guys post this before not too long ago?
I'm sorry but why do people seem to stick by this company with the consoles dropping like flies? I just can't seem to understand it. I understand that the 360 has some great titles already out and coming out for it, but this kind of hardware failure is inexcusable.
That was interesting to read. I really want to know more about the one that exploded though.
Thats what happens, 360s break... one hell of alot. I guess I should be lucky im only on my 3rd one in seven months time?
Twelve is just too many, I would have given up after the third.
damn this dude probably spent less time playing his 360 than I have playing my ps3. gotta love the commitment of a fan that won't give up kudos for him but 13 is a bad number lets hope it doesn't get to that ...
Good point on the first comment on 1up.
Are the Xbox 360 console sales numbers including the amount of consoles given as replacements?
Well I can see the future of these comments, but really, is microsoft doing anything to make their systems function properly.
Seriously, these people with 12+ dead 360s have got to be doing something wrong. Most people don't have 12 dead 360s, so one must assume that the only difference between them two of them is the owner. I don't dispute the 360 is fragile, but when one guy goes through 12 of soemthing, ANYTHING...you have to wonder how many pof those were his fault.
Thank god mine's doing fine. I think we all know at this point it generally has to do with overheating. MS needs to spend more time & money stress testing before launching a console.
single handedly the no. 1 reason i haven't bought a 360 and it would be the last console i will purchase this generation.
After my 3rd 360 I finally gave up, I traded it in bought my wife a Pink DS Lite and some games for her and for my PS3.
It's so weird that 12 console have broken for him, yet I'm still on my launch 360 and I even modded mine... Some people have bad luck I suppose
For all that trouble MS should give him an Elite... damn.. where's the customer service.
i gave up after the first, it's simply unacceptable, a game consoles quality needs to meet certain standards
my fuking ps1 still works.
having a working launch day 360 is like having a working model-t.
and thats discraceful
so, when my 360 broke, i didnt even bother to replace it only to have it break again.
it really dissapointed me, i loved my 360, but when it broke, i just dropped it and waited for the ps3 to come out.
and when you think about it the ps3 is really the better console.
it's hardware is more advanced, it doesnt have a 99.99% failure rate. it's got alot of good games coming out.
actually, i've just sided with nintendo because the wii is a good console, it's fun, it's cheap, it works, and its got good games comin out to.
the 360 just needs to drop out because this faliure rate is going to bite them in the fukin ass.
i have a ps3, and im gonna get a wii soon, i was skeptical about the wii at first, with it's low grade graphics, but when you have the ps3 to make up for that then it really doesnt matter.
microsoft had better pick up thier shit right now if they want to loose these casual 360 owners, and only leave the die hard fasboys, because they will surely loose if that happend
after my friends red ringed last week/yesterday (he someow fixed it, it broke again) my 360 decided to freeze during Just Cause, then on live marketplace, then startup, now red-ringing.
online error code reports seem to say its either gpu, or cack soldering...
gonna spend alot of time on phone 2moro *(sigh)*
Only one more reason to go with good old Nintendo. Even IF the XBOX 360 were actually the best console on the market (which it isn't), I'd rather go with the console that actually lets me PLAY games anydays over the defective one that just gives me the red death ring.
It's because of this that I didn't buy a 360 yet. When Microsoft makes this system reliable, i'll certainly jump in.
I've had my 360 for almost a year, and no significant problems. but man, every time a game freezes it scares the shit out of me. if it breaks I just hope it's before August, while it's still under warranty. knowing my luck it'll give me the red rings the day after my warranty expires.
I guess I'm a lucky one... have had mine since launch. No problems.
Perhaps the plug he is using is malfunctioning the system. I don't know.
A dozen just sounds ludicrous to me. Epically since I'm still on my first.
HAHAHAHAHA. That's just too good. This should be Sony's ad slogan. For an extra $200 you can buy a PS3 that is guaranteed to last or get the cheaper 360 that you'll have to exchange about 3 weeks later. But no worries, that's why you can fork over another $30 for each new 360 warranty.
But seriously, you can't keep writing this off as "bad luck" when virtually 90% of the 360 owning community has problems. Sooner or later you have to call it what it is: faulty manufacturing.
@quilliry: So according to you, you turned down a FREE replacement of your broken console, because you did not wish to be disappointed?
That's some pretty messed up logic. You could have gotten the replacement console, and sold it on craigslist or ebay, and used that money for a Wii.
Either that, or you're simply taking a few liberties with the truth, like maybe you cracked the console open to mod it perhaps? Seems a little more plausible.
This blows me away. I know hardware failure is quite common with the X360, but 12 consoles for one individual? Yikes!
I've had my 360 over a year now without any real troubles. The worst issue I have encountered is a rechargable battery pack for the controller dying after less than 2 weeks of use.
I should consider myself lucky.
Lesson #1:
Don't rely on Microsoft's warranty, you aren't getting a new Xbox 360.
Question is using the xbox 360 online a common occureance among those having to send in the unit multiple times?
Seems like a lot of the people having xbox 360 die on them are the xbox live users. Perhaps those who get the replacements should swear off online for a year and see if the replacement console dies.
I dont care how unreliable the 360 is, REPEATEDLY PAYING FOR DEFECTIVE HARDWARE MAKES YOU A RETARD! Or maybe you just have too much money and not enough sense. If people really wanted to send Microsoft a message, they would put their money where their mouths is and just stop buying the fucking thing, as they probably make more money selling "refurbs" than they do selling new systems, and you idiots just buy right into it, making your complaints completely invalid. This dumbass should`ve learned his lesson after the second console broke. I have less than zero sympathy for people who knowingly support shoddy service. I hear they have this crazy invention called OTHER GAMING SYSTEMS.
The day my 360 gets bricked is the day it goes in the garbage. It`s fun, but I also have a life outside video games and would could find a way to live without achievement points.
12 consoles is way too many. I can accept the fact that eletronics break from time to time, but something is seriously wrong with the xbox360. I dont say anything bad about other consoles because they all have their pros and cons. MS has some explaining to do, they need to fix this problem because it might really affect their sales. it can get stuck with the stigma of being a really shoddy product especially when compared to the PS3 and the Wii
Actually, in the end all these failures are going to be worth it. When Microsoft fails at something with their console usually they put a lot of effort into fixing the problem (for the next gen anyways). This happened with the controller, the original Xbox controller was gigantic, then came the S controller which was ok. Then the 360 controller came and has the best form factor of any of the controllers.
When the Xbox 3 comes out, chances are it'll be the most indestructible console out there. Microsoft will not let this kind of thing happen again, and if they do, that's $400-$500 they're not getting from me.
@Torgo:
:) LOL that had me in stitches.
"Nip down to Tesco and get me a six pack love...oh and make sure it's the one that comes with lost planet" boom! boom!
@Yetanotheruninspiredscreename: Really there is no point in owning a 360 if your not going online to play with it. The whole console and its games are geared for online play.
I like the 360 because of the games. If it craps out and they replace it, I'm okay with that. It's really in MS's best interest to get the console running smoothly, because shipping and repairing must be costing them and arm and a leg.
As for the console crapping out, does anyone know if there's still problems? Most people who say their's died also have the early systems.
And I would like to add that, although I've experienced no problems with my Wii or my PS3, they're also not getting any play-time. Well, the Wii is because I'm playing Wind Waker, but the majority of my gaming remains on the 360.
I'm not saying that I'm expecting problems, I'm saying that I own a game console to play games, and the Wii/PS3 aren't delivering...yet.
@Yetanotheruninspiredscreename:
None of my 360s were ever taken online and I've still had faults, so that's ruled out in my case.
@olion597: man, you're a forgiving soul. at that.
any word on the new chipset? they get that out by the holidays (with halo 3 bundles) that'd really do them some good in this department.
@Marasai:
I hope your not seriously trying to blame the consumer for the 360's problems. Im not saying that people are incapable of damaging thier 36o's, but come on. after 5 consoles you gotta ask yourself if its really his fault and after 11 consoles you have to accept that it is MS fault
I'm still interested in buying 360, but seeing horror stories like this once a week is what's putting me off. I've had terrible luck with consoles in the past few years. I'm currently on my fourth DS and my third PS2. My Wii isn't working all that great either with long-ass loading times in between channels and just recently, artifacting. I'm sure my 360 death record would exceed this guy's.
I feel like I'm a rarity. I've had my 360 for over a year now, and it still works perfectly. I've only gotten a "red ring" once, and it was cause of a power surge during a lightning storm :)
By the way, swearing off XBL would be horrible... Xbox Live is wonderful :D
This guy is an idiot, no way I would still be a fan. The first defect I might just blow off as chance, but after the second or third I'd be pissed.
@olion597: The funny thing is, we're actually seeing a regression with the 360. I mean, wasn't reliability one of the good things about the original Xbox? What happened there?
That's fucked up, y'all. People on thier 3rd, 4th, 6th, 12th? Sweet sweet succulent baby Jesus. Doesn't this cause anyone else concern? Six hundred bucks for a chunk of entertainment that has a (if we are to believe what people say) decent chance of breaking. No wonder I haven't gotten a launch system of any recent-gen console.
I remember when the worst that would happen to your system is that you'd have to occasionally blow on the cartridge.
Well after reading a lot of comments of people with lots of 360 with RLOD, im one of the few lucky ones that have a CORE X360 made in 2006-02-19, and it hasnt gave mayor issues, the casual disc stuck, but nothing serious, of course im always checking how hot is the console, and when its gets too hot i stop playing...
Twelfth? As in he actually had eleven 360s die on him... and he's still supporting them? I think at that point, I'd just start giving my money to the local homeless people to use as toilet paper.
Yeah. Like jacksons98 said, that guy is an idiot. One with amazing amounts of patience and persistence, but an idiot nonetheless.
@SmilingPolitely:
we're certainly seeing a regression, but I don't know that the original xbox was all that sturdy either. I seem to recall it had alot of RRoD problems. At least the original didn't have all these other problems to go along with it.
man, 1 is too many.
but I think microsoft is doing a great job with their hardware support. my unit that bricked 2 days ago was one of the original release shipments back in 2005 and it's being serviced under warranty.
lol at the Sony fanboys saying everyone just needs to give up on the 360 and buy a reliable PS3. Did you quit playing the PS2 and buy and Xbox last gen? I doubt it. Granted the 360 craps out a little more than the PS2, but nothing was more annoying than spending the entire time you planned on playing a game trying to get the system to read the disc. That was ridiculous. If and when my 360 craps out, I'll send it in and have it back within 10 days. It will be a fixed problem in the near future, and like someone said above, though this guys 360 has crapped out on him 12 times, he has probably still got more use out of it than anyone with a PS3 (I'm not talking about watching Blue Ray movies here either....).
